Here in Loudoun we now have an early antlerless-only season that runs from 9/6-10/3. Hard to believe that deer season is now over half the year up here, but the population is just out of control. I heard a couple years ago that the size of the herd in Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax counties alone was over 1M. Considering that their only natural predator up here is General Motors it makes sense I suppose.

I just can't do it though... it was 85 degrees yesterday and it just doesn't feel right sitting in a tree stand in shorts complaining that it's too hot! :-)

If you want to hunt year round you can hunt Wild Hogs down here in Texas 24/7 365 days a year. I think there are even companies that will take you up in a helicopter and let you mow them down Full Metal Jacket style. Seriously, the problem is that bad.

Wild hogs make some of the best bbq

Yeah, the wild hogs are thick as the dickens down there, and extremely cautious around people. That's part of why they hunt by helicopter - because the hogs just flee every time they see people. And yes, they use AR-15's to hunt them. The guideline is - shoot as many as you can as fast as you can.

My brother did a hunt down there that included hogs. The hogs are wary so they set up pens to catch them overnight. Shoot them in the pen.

That doesn't sound very challenging or sporting.

Can't wait. I don't hunt from treestands but I have a half dozen spots picked out up in the mountains. Hope I find time to hunt them. Good luck to everyone. Be safe!

Ran out of Deer Jerky several months ago... ready to restock, sir.

I have the dehydrator ready and a couple new recipes for making Jerky to try this year.

Do share if you've got any favorites. I didn't get around to making any jerky last year which irritated Mrs. Freefall since she had just given me a brand new Excalibur for Christmas. I'm looking forward to giving it a workout this year!

It is just starting to be red drum season on the North Carolina coast. It is calling to me...

I had to laugh - one of the ads on the right is for Concealed Carry information. That's after only nine posts on the topic of hunting. Who says we're not being watched? Targeted advertising, to be sure. hehehe...

Hey, anybody know of any spots a dad and his son can dip into on Sundays after the Tech games? We live in NC so anything too far past blacksburg wouldnt do. Kids got to bag him one this year.

Unfortunately, unless you find private land, I don't think Sundays are an option. Public land doesn't allow Sunday hunting in VA, to my knowledge.

In my recent experience, it has been INCREDIBLY difficult getting permission in this area. They all seem to hunt it themselves and won't share the wealth.

Good luck. Hope you find something. I only hunt National Forest, otherwise I'd offer you permission.

There is a big stretch of National Forest with plenty of access points off a government access road on the eastern face of Potts Mountain in Craig County. I haven't hunted there in years, but it was always solid for deer during late muzzleloader season. National Forest Road 604.2 just west of New Castle

May be able to accommodate, know anything about Bland County?

Brush Mountain is just a few minutes from Blacksburg. Also, there's national forest out Craig Creek. I always hunted these places in evenings after classes. You could not hunt here on Sundays because Virginia only allows hunting on Sunday on private property.

Soooo excited. Got the bow tuned up and ready to put some brown on the ground!

@Mooreheads Ax. I do not, but could probably GPS it. How far is it from the Burg?

I posted this on another thread, but feel like it is appropriate here too... I guess some of us aren't quite ready yet...
