Serious #ECU trolling here. pic.twitter.com/WQSSFfpUug— Denny O'Brien (@TheDOB) September 24, 2014
I know everyone wants Virginia Tech to dip out of the ECU series, but the more I interact with their fans and see stuff like this, the more I don't mind it. They have some moxie to them, they beat us, both of which make me want to beat them more.

Well done ECU, well done. It's too bad that UNC players have no idea what the billboard means since they can't read.
or count
UNC be like
They have their "tutors" read it to them.
God. You'd think they'd won the dang National Championship.
Hope we can fetch a brutal D-Line recruiting class and hit their backfield with our own 20-gun broadside next season!
Well, considering it's been our state for most of the last decade, I guess it is a coup of sorts. They've even impressed Chris Mangus (see what I did there?).
I would like to see our defensive stats for the series (scoring, rushing, etc.) vs. their other opponents for the same time period (win or lose). I think we may own the def. stats category.
It basically is their National Championship. The play second fiddle to UNC, Duke, and NC State all the time and get called "leftovers."
70 points, and a billboard.
Really makes you think they don't like UNC much.
Yeah. I can dig that.
Not to downplay their wins, but ECU has a bit of a complex because the ACC has every other North Carolina team and has repeatedly refused them.
yeah, well, until Louisville, the ACC took a pretty strict stance on academic requirements. Ironic given UNC's recent history with athletic academics, but ECU is pretty far down the list academically as a whole.
Yep... ECU academic standards make WVU look like a haven for Rhode's Scholars. If we weren't going to take WVU because of academic reasons, there was nooooooooo way in hades that ECU was even on the radar.
That being said, the #1 reason ECU will never be invited to the ACC is because we already have 4 NC schools and there is no way that any of the remaining members are going to allow a 5th to join the conference. There's already a feeling that the ACC is too NC-centric, and that would do absolutely nothing to curb those worries.
Besides the fans from ECU and the academics of ECU fit the SEC far better.
FSU has strict academic requirements?
well, until Louisville, at least every school in the ACC was ranked in the top 100 academically. I think maybe NC state had fallen to 105 (or something), but for the most part that was seen as a limit for admission to the conference.
Have YOU tried to get into their clown college? Maaaaaaan...you need YEARS of experience at a big circus like Barnum and Bailey's to even be CONSIDERED. And if you don't have like three ring master recommendation letters, forget it.
I'd much rather have ECU in the Atlantic Coast than Wake Forest...
Negatory. Wake Forest is loooaaaddddeeeedddd. Their bank accounts make up for the lack of students or athletic enthusiasm. ECU is the official North Carolina back-up school (App State is the back-up to the back-up).
So just to get this straight ECU is Radford?
That is correct, but with less class.
Bigtime.
Not only are they a big safety school, but they're also a major stepping stone school in the state as well. I know many, many people who couldn't get into UNC or NCSU out of high school, so they went to one year at ECU, got decent grades, and then transferred (within the UNC system, mind you) into one of the bigger schools.
Honestly, good for them. Being from the 757 I've heard more than my fair share of UNC bs over the years (they even sell some UNC stuff at the Hickory Cracker Barrel in Chesapeake!) and it gets so old. Also, imagine having to deal with 3 lolUVAs in your state (I'm talking Duke, UNC, and WF), no bueno.
I have also been to ECU several times for games and enjoyed my time down there. The banter was just that...banter. Nothing vicious or malicious, just people drinking and having a good time.
With all of that said, we are going to go down there and whoop that ass next year and I am going to enjoy every second of it.
You mean 4 lolUVAs? I mean NC St. is probably the most consistently worst (also most forgettable).
I think he was referring more to the type of school... WF, Duke and UNC have a reputation of being a bit more hoity-toity, like LOLUVA. NCSU is an engineering school.
Yeah that's what I was getting at. NCST is kind of on the back burner in my mind and I have a few friends that went there. Although I thoroughly enjoyed being in Raleigh for the game where we came back from 17-0 down and picked off Russell Wilson like 5 times.
Hickory Cracker Barrel! You live where I live when I'm not at VT!
Sure do. Back home after being in God's Country for 4 years.
Yeah this is just indicative of how in your face they are. Its nice they're poking fun at UNC but that doesn't mean they aren't pricks toward us as well.
Still haven't forgiven the fan base for the numerous taunts about April 16th that have been lobbed my way in the past for having the audacity to wear a VT shirt around them. They have a seriously unhealthy inferiority complex.
There were four or five ECU fans near me at last week's game. Most of them were courteous, almost to the point of seeming unsure whether it was OK to cheer for ECU in the west stands. One of them was terribly obnoxious, but I heard someone else say he had special needs, so I'm not sure what to say about him. What impressed me, though, was their section of the stands and their band. They definitely came to see their team win, and seemed happy but not surprised when things went well for them. Also, on the way out of the stadium I passed quite a few folks in purple and not one of them behaved badly.
I respect the ECU program and enjoy their fans, even had a roommate that played for ECU when they beat VT in Charlotte. The only thing is that when VT beats them then it's worth nothing in terms of national perception but if ECU beats VT then it goes as a huge loss even though ECU is a pretty good team. ECU has a tough program with a great coach in Ruffin that gives a tough game that a lot of folks nationally don't give enough credit. ECU is better than a lot of P5 programs but nationally VT would get more credit beating a team like Kentucky.
With that said I'm thinking that it would be cool to take a trip out to Greenville next year. Hopefully ECU makes a New Years bowl and turns some heads this year.
Have a leg, my thoughts exactly.
hey, ecu is currently ranked. *shrug*
.
Summed up my feelings exactly on the ECU series.
Even if they stay ranked this year a make a New Years bowl, I really doubt us pulling the W next year will mean much more than usual. People will think they had a one and done season.
Now, if they can keep it going for a few years...might be a different story.
Especially becasuse Carden will be gone....I think
That's right, he's a senior and won't be there next year.
So to make this game a non lose-lose scenario for VT, what we need is for ECU to run the table and become National Champion some time in the next 37 years.
Yea, that sounds about right.
Ruffin was on the satellite this morning, and talked about the team's points of emphasis, regarding character: A.B.C. (avoid bad company) and P.I.P. (pirates in public), and that it was a 24 hour deal, not just at practice.
Some other teams [players] could stand to learn from these examples.
funny. My brother in law who's from rural NC (admittedly a UNC grad) refers to ECU as the school where all the guys from his HS who would probably end up in prison went.
That's cute. The plan must be to nip ankles and piss on loafers until someone considers them a rival.
Hopefully next year we swat them with a rolled-up newspaper.
I agree with Joe. I like their moxie. though I can absolutely understand how tired of it Alum07 is. Having it in your face all the time has got to be hell.
can't wait to put them back in their place, back to davy jones locker!
The problem with ECU is now they will lose at least 2 conference games and these wins will be forgotten. I still want out - replace them with our true rival, WVU.
Um, kinda like VT?
Who are they gonna lose to now?
Hahahaha....
LOLUNC
I like it. When is the last time VT hung 70 on anyone? (I know it's not Frank's style).
But after such a convincing win, I like the fanbase talking a little smack. It has to to help recruiting.
Is this anymore rediculous than the Joey "Heisman" poster in downtown NYC that Oregon had?
I like these things when they are a situation of little brother beating big brother, such as this. Another great example was when NIU beat Northwestern and their alumni bought a full page ad in the paper basically calling out Illinois saying, "You're next."
well we did beat Western Michigan 63-0 in 2004... (pretty close)
77 on Akron in '95...
Didn't we put up 52 on Marshall one year? Pretty sure that was the Jayron Hosley coming out party. At least one punt return to the house if I remember correctly
Didn't we beat BC like 62 (ish) to something between the years 2008-2012. I'm in class and too lazy to look it up.
Most we ever put up on BC was 48 (twice). Last time was 2009.
Shouldn't it be #beneathwhom? The implied subject is ECU and the object of the question is UNC which is allegedly above ECU.
Not that UNC would be able to tell since they don't have real classes.
north carolina education system, it'll get after ya.
An ECU fan from Virginia said just now on SiriusXM's College Sports Today, the Hokie fans couldn't be any more gracious to the visiting Pirates. That makes me a proud Hokie. That being said, we owe them some payback on the field next year!
Chris Mangus will light it up with the Pirates. Sorry to see him go
I believe that award goes to you
Chris could be amazing in that offense and as a former Hokie you should be wishing him the best success anywhere he goes, no matter where it is. He barely had access to the field here so why be an ass about him trying to find it somewhere else?
Friendly advice: I'd recommend you rethink that comment
Edit: I've removed your downvote
EDIT: vote reset (love that feature) after the change of heart. Just remember we don't bash any individual here, especially when it comes to choices that affect their future.
Jerk Alert!
Ok Mr. Barton, take this as a lesson learned not to be like the guys over at GC. Lets recover and regroup. I have faith in you!
Just curious, what is GC? Thanks for your positive feedback on both of your replies, appreciate it!
GC = Gobbler Country, i.e. the place that is in a bit of upheaval after a lousy ECU article and nasty comment storm.
Gotcha. Seen their stuff on Twitter, never really read anything from them
He'll get playing time, and he's back in his home state.
Best situation for him, and it doesn't take carries away from our guys.
This shmuck is at -10 legs, can he be banned now? Jeesh! Is there a rule there?
-25 = banhammer.
I hope he didn't blow it all with one comment though. That seems wasteful.
He is brand new and this is his 14th comment. Let's just chalk it up to getting a feel for the respect level TKP community keeps. No need to ban him or ask for banning. His other comments seem fair and reasonable (i didn't read all of them but some)
Agreed... I upvoted just purely to take some of the sting off the flood of downvotes he got for that comment. Don't like the thought of one strike and your done that a flood of downlegs can get ya.
Everyone deserves a get out of jail free card while they're young to TKP. There's a big culture shock from the rest of the internet and this place.
I apologize for being so disrespectful towards Mangus. Like one of you said, I'm new at this (as if -8 turkey legs doesn't scream Rookie material!), but that's not a good excuse for saying something dumb. PLEASE DON'T BAN ME TKP, I WON'T DO IT AGAIN! Go Hokies
You can always go back and edit the comment, and likely several people will go reset their down-leg
Upvoted both comments. See? It's really not hard to get along with us here at TKP ha
Thanks!
