WR Cam Phillips Starts Hot in First Four Games, Takes Aim at Tech's Record Books

Freshman Cam Phillips has already made a mark on Saturdays.

[Virginia Tech Athletics \ Dave Knachel]

When you ask freshman wide receiver Cam Phillips what's been his favorite play at Virginia Tech in his fledgling career as a Hokie, you get answer that would make any good position coach proud.

"Other than the ECU touchdown, my first touchdown, in the William and Mary game, I sprung Shai McKenzie for a touchdown," Phillips said. "I made a great crackback block on a linebacker, then ran up the field and made a block on another guy, so I had fun with that."

Phillips was instrumental on McKenzie's 39-yard touchdown run, and his hustle down the field is something that made every member of the offensive coaching staff proud.

"Coach (Scot) Loeffler put it on in the team meeting, just showing the effort that I showed on the play," Phillips said. "He said 'that's how it should be, every play.' So I felt kind of special, it kind of stuck out."

But blocking is hardly Phillips' only talent on the football field. Phillips already has 13 catches for 168 yards and a score just four games into the season, and has quickly become a key part of the Hokies' passing game.

In the past two games, Phillips has become a deadly weapon for quarterback Michael Brewer on third downs, when he needs someone to get open downfield the most.

Over the course of the team's last two games, Phillips has caught balls for gains of 12, 22, 13 and 30 yards on third down to extend critical drives for the Hokies.

Yet just a few months ago, Phillips wasn't even sure if he'd be attending Virginia Tech.

"It was Tech and UVA," Phillips said. "I went to Rutgers for a 7-on-7 tournament, but that was pretty much it. But UVA and Tech were my only two."

Phillips makes it sound like a simple process, but he had to sort through offers from a total of 11 different schools to make his decision.

He says it ultimately came down to the promise of early playing time and his relationship with the staff.

"I took (playing time) into consideration," Phillips said. "But it was just a matter of which receiver coach I had a tighter bond with, what I thought he could teach me. So that's why I chose Tech."

But Phillips, a native of Hyattsville, Maryland, thought he'd have even more offers from schools in his area, but felt a bit overlooked by some.

"There were some colleges I thought kind of just looked me over, and I thought I was a pretty good player. I thought I'd have their offer, but they said I wasn't good enough," Phillips said. "So I try to pride myself on working hard and doing everything I can, and hopefully those teams don't play Virginia Tech."

Now he finds himself in position to prove his abilities early and often with the Hokies. With Josh Stanford taking a leave of absence from the Hokies, he's assumed a bigger role in the offense, even starting the last two games.

He's joined in the starting lineup by fellow freshman Isaiah Ford, and it's hard to avoid making comparisons between the two given their lightning-fast impact on the team.

"We're very tight," Phillips said. "We're dorm mates and our lockers are kind of close together, so we talk a lot and watch film together."

It's certainly unusual for a pair of freshmen to start for any college team at receiver, let alone one like the Hokies that's so frequently valued veterans on both sides of the ball. But wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead says that if the duo keeps making plays, he's perfectly content to leave them in the game.

"I'm never going to say 'take my guys off the field.' If anything, I'm going to push for that," Moorehead said. "So as long as we're making plays and putting the balls in the end zone, I want them to stay on the football field."

With Moorehead ready to give him a chance to succeed, and with such an early start to his career, Phillips is even considering the possibility of smashing some of Tech's receiving records.

"I believe every good player should have a goal in mind to reach, that kind of pushes them to work for something," Phillips said. "After you beat the record, hopefully you want to continue to make it go further so nobody has a chance to break that. It's just something to have in my head every day, something to shoot for in the season."

There are some big names to pass in the record books, like Danny Coale and Jarrett Boykin, but Phillips will take things one step at a time.

As his pride in his blocking abilities indicates, he's more focused on the team's performance than anything else.

"To me none of the individual stuff matters, catches, yards, none of it matters if we don't get a win," Phillips said. "Even when we do get a win, I try not to talk about statistics because it's a team thing. If the team's doing well, I'm happy."

Cam Phillips & Isaiah Ford can catch the ball and are good blockers. They would make any wide receiver coach proud. They have a great future for sure.

I think you mean Isaiah Ford

Isaiah Ford. Hes a stud.

We have always had some great wide receiver duos that have really been overlooked by everyone in the media.
I feel like these two could be talked about as one of the most highly praised duos in the land by next fall.
Hell maybe even by the end of this season!

They're freshmen who are performing like veterans. That cannot be overlooked. I mean, really... we are starting 2 true freshmen WRs who were not enrolled in June and they are both making plays and doing the little things we were screaming at redshirt seniors for not doing just 2 seasons ago. What these guys are doing as freshmen right now is incredible, and if they progress over their time here on campus, we are looking ridiculously good down the line.

The more this offense grows going forward in future years as this team practices together and starts to learn what each other do, these 2 guys are going to explode.

Agree, and would add: What Coach Moorehead is doing in only his second year as a Position Coach on a major conference team right now is incredible as well.

His willingness to play the best man, and his ability to get the best out of them, is going to make recruiting talent a lot easier.

I thought we'd see the most improvement by Grimes Searels or Loeffler -- but I think Moorehead is having the best results so far. Obviously as Searels & Loeffler get more of their guys in the mix and up to speed things could change, but currently Moorehead is my New Coach MVP.

I've always thought OL will be the slowest to come around, but will be the quickest to click when it finally comes together. Just one weakness on the OL can make the whole unit look bad, so everyone has to be bringing their A-game every day or else they will look bad. I see an OL right now that is struggling, but I don't think its as bad as it used to be. There is some improvement there, but its very clearly still a work in progress. My gut feeling is that we're really not going to see it all come together until about midway through next season and into 2016.

Also keep in mind that Searls has none of his guys yet and there was only one recruiting season for Grimes.

Coale & Boykin put together the top 2 receiving careers in school history and had 408 & 441 yards respectively and a total of 2 TD (both Boykin) their freshman years. Through 4 games, Phillips has 202 yards & 1 TD, Ford has 260 & 3. These guys are on pace to put up senior numbers as true freshman. With better protection and more consistent quarterback play, we could have each of them grabbing 1000 yards in the next couple years. The biggest thing to me is seeing Phillips say his biggest moment was busting his ass to get 2 blocks and spring a big TD run for Shai. That is the Hokie attitude that needs to be everywhere.

That's exactly what makes these guys so incredibly valuable. They know they have the talent but manage to stay humble and work for the team. It's players like that who will bring the team together to accomplish huge things through their collegiate career. I hope they help inspire the rest of the team with that mentality and the potential for their future is awesome.

Sigh. I hate UVA.

Great interview. Cam sounds like a guy with hi head screwed on properly. It's nice to see these true receivers coming in and playing immediately.

Cam Phillips and Isaiah Ford, the next Danny Coale/Jarrett Boykin combo? It's Freshman year, and they've both been doing great things. I could see them topping the receptions/passing records by the time they move on.

I love me some Danny Coale, but these guys have much better athleticism than Coale. If they can run routes like him and come down with everything like he did, they add speed to that, watch out.

The Dude Abides

Danny Coale is still open. And he caught that damn ball.

But yes.

One thing I always love about our player interviews is the personality it shows in these young kids.
I'd rather have a few humble, smart, and driven kids, than a crab-stealing, profanity yelling Heisman winner.

(now just to win some championships with the former group)

Is it true that Isaiah Ford will be playing basketball for the Hokies this year? Looked up some stats and apparently he averaged 37 ppg in high school. Hokies bball could definitely use some more of that, as long as the guy's legs don't fall off. Feel like we said Marcus Davis was going to play roundball for the Hokies too, and that never really panned out. But hey, with a kid as poised and talented as Ford is, the sky is the limit.

Both he and Cam Phillips look very impressive this year and I loved reading Phillip's favorite play was the block in the W & M game. Dude sounds like a humble, smart kid. But that's what you expect from true Hokies like Phillips and Ford. Great article

Last I recall reading, Frank gave the OK to let Ford join the basketball team after football season was over.

"Exit light..."

Taking #NoDaysOff to a whole new level. That'd be awesome to see him on the court this season. He certainly has the build and speed to add to this team

I think Marcus Davis didn't make the roundball team because they couldn't get him to block-out in the lane.

I'm thinking krak was making a joke based on MD7's infamous blocking "efforts."

I loved seeing Jeff King working hard in the paint for the Hokies.

He was on my intramural team the year before that. Dominant with an underutilized handle for a man his size.

The Dude Abides

Totally agree, Jeff King is one of my all time favorites.

Sigh. I hate UVA.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

thanks bro

They couldn't get him to block in Lane either

"It was Tech and UVA"

This still shocks me. I know i'm (obviously) biased here, but looking at what each school has put on the field over the past 20 yrs how do you compare the 2? Glad he made the right call! Love his efforts on the field so far and after reading those interview quotes I like him even more.

Now go break some records!!

I thought the exact same thing. Like my mind pictured him in blue and orange and it felt more like a nightmare than a reality. Yuck, gross, disgusting, vomit

You know, that is an excellent point. Personally I kind of overlooked that until now. Not only are these guys TRUE freshmen, but they are doing more than just getting the job done. Everyone refers to Hokie Nation as DBU, which is really awesome don't get me wrong, but it'd be nice to see some offensive weapons have nice careers down the road, past college ya know? Go back and watch Ryan Williams highlights and tell me that kid didn't look like an NFL superstar coming out of college. It'd be awesome to see a new trend of offensive talent take the No Fun League by storm and really show out. And I can't think of a better time than now, when we got a committee of freshmen RBs and WRs. As long as these guys can stay healthy man, future looks awesome!
