Josh Sweat's High School Career is Over

Larry Rubama of The Virginian-Pilot published a statement from Oscar Smith coach Richard Morgan.

"Josh Sweat has an injury that will require surgery. Therefore he will not be able to play for Oscar Smith for the remainder of the season."

Assume that will affect his campus visits too. (Unless we can bring him in for UVa...)

Best of luck Josh during your recovery. Fortunately he plans on enrolling in whatever school he chooses early, so that should help his rehab process. Hopefully it's the Hokies though!

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Silver lining for Sweat, for sure. Having a top-of-the-line rehab facility at a university paid for by the university will ensure a better long term career for Sweat.

Terrible news for a great High School player. Hopefully he gets back to 100 % soon and be as productive in college as he was in High School.

Hate to hear it.

That being said, I am looking forward to seeing his next collegiate game, when he takes the field for VT on Labor Day against Ohio State next fall.

Best of luck, Josh. Get yourself healthy. You've got a great career ahead of you, and we're all pullin for ya.

Hoping for a Shai Mckenzie-esque recovery. I also wouldn't mind a Shai Mckenzie-esque commitment, but hoping for a smooth recovery and successful collegiate career either way.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

We need to get a Shai Mckenzie-esque dime piece to encourage him to choose the good guys...

I need to get me one of those too

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

I'm not sure how much of an effect Shai's individual situation might have on him, but it's surely got to be encouraging for Sweat to see that a guy that injured his knee as a senior enrolled in the spring, rehabbed and got healthy for fall practice, and is making an immediate, significant impact in Blacksburg. No matter his choice, I hope he succeeds, but it would be much sweeter to see his collegiate career unfold in maroon and orange.

Very sad news for him, but best wishes in his recovery

I had a feeling this would happen when I saw about his injury. I thought it would have been foolish for him to keep playing even if he didn't need surgery. I hope he recovers well though. I'm intrigued as to how this will affect schools wanting to recruit him. We often see schools back off of kids with serious injuries, but how does that change for the #1 recruit in the nation. On a more positive but yet selfish note, I do hope this means he's going to be able to come to Tech for the Miami game for his OV.

Have we heard what the ligament damage is yet?

Hate this for him. Best of luck to Josh on his recovery.

Hope his recovery goes well. Hokie nation still wants you Josh!!

@AMB4VT

God bless him. Hopefully he can come back from this surgery better than ever regardless of where he plays college ball...

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

If he is as hard working and as dedicated as we've all read about, I have no worries whatsoever he'll be 100% eventually! Hopefully he takes the Ken Ekanem route and commits and is able to start at the greatest school on Earth.

This shouldn't affect his recruitment at all. Its not like the NFL where millions of dollars are at stake. Teams can redshirt him for the year and if he doesn't look like he would be able to play at all (highly unlikely given the injury) they just drop his scholly. A $40,000 risk, which some donor probably would give just over the excitement of landing the #1 prospect in the country.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

However in the world of athletics some schools will back out after an injury. Just ask Shai.. he had 3-4 teams drop schollie after his knee.

I doubt anyone drops Sweat. You don't just give up on the undisputed #1 overall recruit in the country, even if he hurts himself. The upside is far, far too good to pass up.

I too doubt anyone drops Sweat. But the real question is, how hard does FSU, Bama and others go after him. I'm sure that will go a long way in sealing the deal.

wasn't he playing both sides of the line all season, plus punter, plus kicker, plus waterboy, plus coach, plus... ?

Was he playing absurd amount of time during the game he got hurt as well? Not so sure someone shouldn't be questioning his coach at the moment. I played high school ball in early 90's and even then we had rules about kids playing time to avoid injury.

I agree with the sentiments. It's a terrible thing and hopefully he bounces back. he should do. And proud to be from VT where we honor our commitments to kids who do get hurt.

I know this wont affect how hard other teams recruit him but will it affect how he views other teams. I think it was Brent Benedict who transfered to VT from Georgia becasue he didn't agree with the rehab plan the UGA team doctors had for him (or something like that). Now for the #1 recruit in the nation, any school will give him whatever rehab plan he wants.

I too noticed how many positions be was playing. All jokes aside if he wasn't the number 1 recruit at defensive end, I still think he could be an elite tight end. Great speed and great hands. He had elite athleticism and was always open. I couldn't stop thinking tight end seriously. The need at defensive end is far greater at the moment though.

Win one for the Beamer...

I still think he could be an elite tight end.
