Meta: Has anyone experienced TKP loading sluggishly?

I did some database optimizations over the last 30 minutes (10:20 PM - 10:50 PM) which took the website completely offline. Before that, did anyone notice the website loading slow on a new page? I don't know if it's just my ISP or what, but at times I'd get half a page served up, or everything but the sidebar which is indicative of some packet loss.

Seems to be working fine for me on a tablet. I am just missing about 2,000 turkey legs.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Been having issues with the tracker loading up four or five links and freezing mid-load. Only noticed it on the tracker tho.

a little sluggish, but hard to tell if TKP issue or the jokers on the great firewall.

Sluggish and when using my iPhone only half the screen has anything on it.

Is it still happening now?

It happened to me earlier while on my phone, but is not happening now.

The speed seems better, but when first opening keyplay on my phone it still opens on only half the screen.

I see this when a banner ad is huge, so the screen adjusts to the size of the ad rather than the content in the page. Samsung Galaxy S4, FWIW.

All of the internet for me has been sluggish recently (thanks, Time Warner), so I didn't really notice any change outside of what I have been used to.

It's been pretty smooth at my end, though I suspected some form of site maintenance was going on earlier.

Its been smooth for me most of the night. I only experience slow down when a lot of moving Memes and Gifs are posted but that probably more to do with my end.

Oh.

OT, maybe: I did try to post a meme in the post-game story either late Sunday or really early Monday (an advice hokie dealing with dork magic), and the post wasn't there when I looked for it Mon. afternoon. Wasn't sure if it was deleted or just didn't take.

It looked something like this:

Yes, I have seen exactly what you describe from time to time. I did notice it earlier yesterday evening, but downforeveryoneorjustme.com indicated that it was just me. A few moments later, everything was back up. I have noticed the same thing very randomly over the last couple of weeks, but it usually only lasts for a few moments, so I've always chalked it up to high traffic or maybe just an indication that I should get back to work :)

Mobile use always seems fine, but I'm only checking in via phone or iPad for a few minutes occasionally; I'm usually on my laptop.

I just moved, so I had assumed it was my new internet server not liking you (probably personally) for whatever reason. Loaded fine this morning, though.

It was a catch

I haven't had any slow loading of pages per se, however the latest posts auto scroll has been weird the last week. The page will load and send me to the latest post then instantly skip to a random(maybe not) part of the page until I press "N." This might just be all the images people have been posting lately loading late and expanding the posts.

Same problem for me.

Anyone else noticing some funkiness with the fonts on the site right now?

Is the site undergoing an overall upgrade?

I was going to start a new thread, but that's probably not necessary. I pushed a new facelift live last night. TKP used to have 4 different fonts (header, menu, frontpage body, article body), which is not only horrible design, but increases load times. I spent some time testing fonts and settled on Runda, the one used throughout. A lot of the upgraded was standardizing spacing and line height, which hopefully will make reading easier on your eyes.

I condensed and spaced out the top bar, added more links in the footer and swapped out the Hokie Stone for a sweet new tiled background. Mostly subtle changes, but that was the point. Hope everyone likes it.

Why didn't you go with sacrastica as the uniform font?

BTW-really like the new design. It's clean and easy to read.

Oh, my aching back!

Only 1 minor thing I noticed... On mobile, in the past, the header used to condense so that the profile and forum buttons dropped off, and it started with Tracker, unless you went landscape. From what I have noticed, this no longer happens. I actually exclusively use the Tracker Functionality, especially on Mobile, as I find its just way easier to follow everything that way. Could you switch that back (or would that slow load times down again for you?) If you can't, no biggie... As Tim Gunn says, I'll make it work.

And another thing... the spacing out of the top bar is awesome, but its completely throwing me for a loop today. I'm hitting FORUM accidentally about 30% of the time right now. Even if you didn't intend for it to be so, impressively subtle trolljob, good sir.

I don't want to open up a can of worms for taking requests on demand, but your issues have been adjusted. I had reasons for re-ordering the menu, but I never thought about the effect it had on people's muscle memory. Should be good to go.

Good stuff, Joe. I noticed the update when I went to check the day's news on my iPad and wound up looking at my profile. Figured I just hadn't been properly caffeinated, but then realized something was different. Nice design!

"Exit light..."

Thanks! I feel bad for even possibly opening the can of worms. Overall, I like the changes that have been made, and it makes the site look far more clean than it did before (which is saying something, because TKP was always a clean site, design-wise (its our users that have dirty minds)).

I am down with the fonts. It definitely reads a lot clearer, as font shows up bigger and spacing is a bit more as well. (at least in look) very clean overall.

But to be honest I'm kind of missing the old sidebars. I liked the darker palette on the side. Maybe it's just me but it's really bright on my laptop now. I'm sure I'll get used to it though.

Are you talking about the new background, i.e. TKP fists versus Hokie Stone? I didn't change the sidebars, like "Active Discussions".

yep, sorry, that's what I mean. I love the TKP fists, but really bright. Not asking for adjustment though. Just really bright on my laptop.

swapped out the Hokie Stone for a sweet new tiled background

I was pretty pumped to see this. Love everything you've done with the site, but I missed the hand/key-shaking logo. I'd love to see it on a T-Shirt/Shot Glass/Beer Pint one day.

Nice new fonts and feel to the sight, Joe and gang! Thanks!

A minor layout issue I've noticed in the past but haven't ever felt was bad enough to start a new thread or find an old "site issues" thread:

I like to make my browser window small at work so that I have productive-looking things around it while I'm reading TKP so someone looking over my shoulder won't see a screen full of VT football. As such, I've noticed a couple peculiarities with various window widths, which might take some adjustments with the @media queries in the CSS.

When the window width is between 960px to about 1100px, the search box drops down to a 2nd line (right justified) like so:
Medium Window

Below 960px it drops the sidebar to the bottom of the screen and reduces the size and number of top menu items, so there's no problem. But as you decrease further, at about 720px, it drops the search bar to the 2nd line (left justified), and at somewhere around 600px or so it drops "PHOTOS" down with it. Here's an image, with the cursor hovering on the PHOTOS link to turn it orange:
Small Window

similar impact on my Ipad.
The search bar gets in the way of reading.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

It was bugged on the iPad last night, but should be fine now, at least on my third-generation retina. Is it still giving you a problem?

Fixed. Thanks.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I'm not on an iPad, but it still looks the same way for me on Chrome. Not a big deal though.

Yeah, aside from having a billion different media query breakpoints, there not much I can do. I could add JavaScript listeners to detect resizing and they could add and remove elements, but that's quite a pain in the butt.

My suggestion is to make it more narrow until the browser hits the mobile breakpoint, and use that.

Hey - this is what I do as well. I surround it with outlook and it looks like an open email.

Thankfully at my work we all have/are able to get screen tint on our monitors so I can sit on TKP on one screen and work on the other! Its absolutely amazing!!!!!!!

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I don't think we have them at work, but dang - that is awesome sir!

Didn't CBS introduce a "Boss Button" on their March Madness online streams so you could click it and your screen would turn into a spreadsheet or something? That.

That would be awesome. Just link to joelestra's latest stat breakdown, anchored at the first bar graph. Instant productivity. Now where are my TPS report cover sheets...

I noticed the tracker was really quiet on game day. Did you implement that change to limit new posts, or are we just that focused as a community?

I am sure the change to mandatory 200 legs to post had alot to do with it.
On that note I feel like He-man cause I now have the power!

I think it's what scVTfClemson said. By the time someone hits 200 legs, they know how to operate around here a bit better.

I was going to complain about the new fonts, but now that I'm on my phone instead of my laptop, it looks really great! I'll probably get used to it on the big screen eventually

Where did the Log Out button move to? I don't use it very often, but if I'm ever accessing TKP from a public computer, I'd want the ability to logout without having to go through the browser's settings.

theres a log out button?

Damn it. I disabled it thinking there wasn't a good use for it. Good call. I'll add it back in soon.

No need Joe. Love the new design and logo. Tough

At the risk or sounding whiny, I noticed the "Log Out" button re-appeared where the "Tracker" button used to be. I've now logged out of TKP more in the last 20 mins than I have in the last 2 years. Anyway that bad boy can move over to the right a bit? If not, I'll figure it out, just didn't know if others had the same experience.

Whoa I just noticed that. I always go to Tracker by typing the URL, but this would have hosed me had you not said anything.

I've always seen the Log Out link in the top right corner as opposed to a first-class menu item.

Funny. I have just logged myself out twice in the past 10 mins. LOL

@AMB4VT

For fear of being one of the worms in the can...a suggestion...

It would be nice to have the forum link also be available at the bottom of the page. If it's a really long topic, it takes a really long time to scroll back up the screen on a phone. (And if it's a long opening post, sometimes it's hard to find the link at the top.)

I like to use the link vs. the back button so the forum list will repopulate correctly and show me where the new post are.

Yes. Or on a Mac where I have to hit extra keys to page up, and even that isn't very effective.

The "View all Discussions" link at the bottom takes you back to the Tracker.

Joe - not sure if it is just my network, but today TKP has been giving me problems. I wasn't able to connect to the site for 20 minutes or so, and was loading sluggishly before that.

Not sure if you threw an update in this morning, but just wanted to let you know.

I'm aware of it. I believe my hosting company is having issues. It seems to be working now, but I haven't heard back from them yet.

Update: It was an ISP error with my hosting company, all should be working now.

Awesome - I figured you were on top of it.

Thanks Joe! Appreciate the work you do for us!

Working for me now. For a few minutes I thought I was actually going to have
to work today. :)

@AMB4VT

Was slow for me too but seems to be working now

Not sure if it's just the internet where I am today (also maybe my computer), but I've noticed sometimes that the logo doesn't seem to be loading at the top right corner, and if that happens, the URL link the image logo should be pointing to (the main page) won't appear either, so the top left corner is just dead space, that won't navigate back to the main page.

Again, it could be entirely the computer I'm on currently/network I'm on currently.

Also side note, I've noticed if I put my phone in landscape mode, that when the top bar re-aligns, the second level of links (comments - search), won't have the background behind it, and also interferes with the main text page. I know that's at a really nitpicky level, and isn't something that needs to be urgently fixed, but just a note in case if you wanted to know

OK, the "log out" link is back, and is all the way over on the right. It won't appear on tablets and handhelds for size considerations and it would seem very rare that would be a public or shared device.

Thanks Joe!

@AMB4VT

Someone named "googleads . g . doubleclick . net" really wants me to watch their video while I'm reading through a long thread, and it's effectively ruining my TKP experience. Is it just me? After I clicked "never allow and don't ask", it came up again and just froze the browser (IE 11) requiring me to recover the web page. (about 5:30 pm, 5/3/15, while reading 'interesting comments from Torrian...') One looked like a Maytag dishwasher commercial.

Edit: it was "wants to track your physical location", and repeatedly reset the page back to the location of the ad, losing my place.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I've had ads similar to that before. They kept jumping the page back up to the ad location away from where I was reading. It's been at least a week or two since I've had an ad like to hat though.

Exactly what I am experiencing. It was accompanied by the "google....wants to track your location" at about the same time, which I ignored at first. When I finally selected "never", the whole browser crashed the next time the ad tried to load.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Clear your cookies. That sometimes helps. Occasionally there's an ad in the rotation that flakes out.

"Exit light..."

Periodically I get an ad that wants to auto run and when I've had a page idle in the background as I complete work somewhere else, I get the audio of the ad trying to run.

This is going to be great for the ACC.
