HOT DAMN, College Football in October is starting out with a bang or is it a Clang? There are 9 legit games I could have selected this week, but I went with the six match-ups featuring twelve ranked* top 25 teams. These games are highlighted by the SEC West .. now that the OOC portion of the schedule is almost over. Three of the six games this week feature ranked SEC West teams playing another ranked West team. The depth is unreal even by SEC standards. The worst team in the West, Arkansas would probably win the ACC Coastal or B1G Ten West or even the SEC East. You might not like it, but you have to (grudgingly) respect it.
* Yes, I am aware AP and Coaches rankings don't mean a damned thing, unless used to troll, get clicks and create controversy. Never mind, they mean a lot.

2013 was merely a blip on the radar for Mike Slive and the SEC
Another note, it's redemption week for Stanford, Michigan State and LSU who all lost to earlier this year to good teams. None of these teams can take a second loss and even think about the Playoff Four.
Week 6 Games
Saturday, October 4th
Texas A&M at Mississippi State -2.5
12:00 pm ESPN
Artificial noise makers: Cowbell > Piped in stadium noise
- Dan Mullen's best team since he's been at MSU and he's in what could end up being the best college division ever. #FAILSTATE
- I know the NFL will have an appeal to Kevin Sumlin, but at his salary of $5M, I hope he stays at aTm a long time, I want to see how far he can take the Aggies
Pick: Mississippi State. The Aggies are flawed and will take a 3 losses this year, the first this weekend to teamClanga.
***
Oklahoma -4.5 at TCU
3:30 pm FOX
- For being an universal playoff team (currently) it sure seems like OU is flying under the radar ... that's a positive
- Remember the chatter a few years back about if TCU and Gary Patterson were in a major conference they'd win just as much there ... ahem 14-14 since
Pick: OU and it will not be close.
***
Alabama -6.5 at Ole Miss
3:30 pm CBS

The Grove is undefeated and finally Ole Miss is too, so Gameday can now go
- Tip your cap to Lane Kiffin and give a nod to Nick Saban ... again. We should know better than doubt, now lets see if he can rejuvenate Charlie Weis
- Gameday hysteria and Hugh Freeze holy rolling are the only chances Ole Miss has vs a better coached collection of talent
Pick: Alabama covering. I don't trust Dr. Bo in big time moments, even if the Tide's secondary is their worst unit.
***
Stanford -1.5 at Notre Dame
3:30 pm NBC
- ND's first real test. As of now most of us have ignored the Blue and Gold, a win here and the nation is put on notice
- If the Tree wants to win out, Kevin Hogan needs to get a lot better. Year three as a starter and he looks worse now than as a freshman
Pick: Stanford by a touchdown. The Tree are flawed, but battle hardened, in what's basically a pick 'em give me that little edge.
***
LSU at Auburn -7.5
7:00 pm ESPN
Overcompensating for something or uber redneck shirt gun?
- As good as they are something feels off with both teams, this is the type of win that can jump-start a season though
- Les Miles logic defying moments vs Gus Malzahn play calling ability. The college football equivalent of Right vs Left Brain
Pick: Auburn covering, but I am not confident. LSU sending out a true freshman for his first start at QB in Jordan-Hare ... good luck with that.
***
Nebraska at Michigan State -7.5
8:00 pmABC
- Contrary to talking heads hyperbole, the B1G's Playoff chances aren't dead, but it is limited to these 2 and maybe tOSU. Gonna be more limited after Saturday
- Is it just me or is weird to see both teams, under these coaches, scoring so many points? That's not very B1G
Pick: Nebraska covering by a half point. Ten point Sparty win seems right.
***
Beer of the Week

The Bruery Sour in the Rye
Sour yeast and bacteria did a number on this beer as it aged in oak barrels for over a year creating a sour ale with a complex character of rye spice, oak and a subtle funk. Was gifted this last year. Aged it myself for a bit, and now it's time split it with the the friend who gave it to me ... while watching the night match-ups. Cheers.

Picks are made against the spread and by the look of the group's correct percentage, be thankful it's for entertainment purposes.

The last two games have "decided by a FG" written all over them to me, for some reason.
I love the chaos that comes with weekends like this, but my Six Pick suffers.
So do I. 4-2 ain't bad, though, I missed Oklahoma and LSU. I thought LSU was just going to be a perennial power at this point, but it looks like they might be SIXTH in the SEC West this year.
Yeah, that's nuts. I was staring down the barrel of 1-5 this week until Nebraska managed to rally back and cover.
I got 1-5 because they covered. Bye bye second place.

Where are the current standing? And how is someone keeping up with this, incredible!
Thru week 5
Ask Brooks, when I did it ... it was crap.
You can hit the tracker on the top of the page and search "Six Pick Results" and you ought to be able to find the most recent standings from those results.
EDIT: Didn't realize there was already a link...
After seeing the results I regret asking. Eeeesh, under .500 for the year, Turrible.

LSU +7.5 That grass eating SOB will be in rare form Sat night.
Nebraska +7.5 Sparty is scared of the dark.
Beer will be an audible at the line, but could very well be a few of these since it looks like I'm taking my dad and sons to the ODU-Marshall game Sat. (To honor the Oskar Blues brewery being built down in VB.) Dad is a Marshall alum, and that's to VT, he hadn't seen them win in person until last years Military Bowl. Hoping to go 2-for-2 this weekend. (And I'll have on my St Patrick's Day green VT hat, just to really confuse people.)

well, it's green flash, not oskar blues being built in vb. not sure where you are staying, but I can give advice on good places to eat that have good beer selections and where to buy before the game.
sorry, I couldn't help with tix.
That's right, stupid me. Green Flash has some nice stuff! (Oskar Blues is in Ashville with Sierra!)
No prob on tix. Looking just to do a loop that day, and head home afterwards. Only 2.5 hours or so up north, and imagine we'll be one of a few headed north across the Tunnel after the game.
Ok, so in the last revision, headed to VB Friday night...and could hit someplace for a Growler fill for the tailgate.
Any suggestions close to the BBT?
Welp, the overall was sub-par, but at least I got the outright upset for TCU right. And Sparty is still scared of the dark. Did you see their student section?

And I don't buy the hype of the SEC-W. They get inflated rankings preseason, play nobody OOC, and then just boost their rankings more while they beat each other up in the regular season. The notion the worst team in that division would easily contend for an ACC title (which is what you're saying when you say they would win the Coastal) is absurd and insulting to all fans of the ACC.

The Raleigh area has several craft beer breweries to check out if traveling to the game. One of my fav's from the area is Devils Tramping Ground Tripel by Aviator

DTG is a very good beer, and Aviator is a very good brewery. But that said, if you're going to make your way out to NC for the game, help support either of the following 2 Breweries:
1 - Big Boss Brewery - This Brewery has been excellent to our chapter over the years. We gather there before or after every football game during the season, hold all of our board meetings at their Tap Room, and even host the 3.2 for 32 run at their main Brewery. The favorite of all Hokies of theirs is the fall pumpkin flavored beer, Harvest Time.

2 - Raleigh Brewing Co. - A newbie to the area, founded in March of 2013, they are absolutely exploding with business right near downtown Raleigh. Most importantly, they have a Hokie working in the Brewery helping to create all their delicious brews. By far, their best beer (and possibly one of the best year-round beers in the area) is their 9.2% alcohol Belgian Blonde, Hell Yes Ma'am.

noted.
have had big boss and aviator beers, very good. raleigh brewing is new to me, on the radar now.
Lone Rider needs to be on the radar as well. My favorite Raleigh brewery by far.
Thank you - I forgot Big Boss was in the Triangle - their Harvest Time is excellent. Had only heard of Raleigh Brewing company recently, and have never tried anything from them. Do you know if they bottle? A 9.2% brewed by a Hokie? Hell Yes Sir! Hopefully they'll come out to a Triad beer festival and save me a trip east.

Miss State to cover and win. Not looking forward to seeing my Tigers take on #FAILSTATE in Starkville this year.
Oklahoma to cover because I know nothing about the horned frogs other than Andy Dalton
Ole Miss to cover at home. not sure if they win, but Bo finally figures something out. Moral victory!
Notre Dame to win. Stanford looks flawed, but talented.
Gotta go for the Gus Bus covering the spread after not doing so in two straight weeks. WAR DAMN!
Michigan State to cover. Nebraska looks like the have one (VERY GOOD) playmaker, and not much else. Cook looks pretty good.
Beer: breakfast beer of champions - Well's Banana Bread. It's not phenomenally well-made, but I love waking up with one.

I've seen this, but did not want to get a 6 of something I'm afraid would be too sweet. Not really a ringing endorsement. Should I get a six next time, or wait til I see it in individual bottles to try it?
I like it very much. It's definitely NOT overly sweet.
The comment of "it's not incredible" or whatever made above by me means that you can find better-made beer. This is one of those "guilty pleasures of a beer snob" things. Stuff rated low can still be very fun and tasty depending on your disposition.
I recommend doing a pick-6 at Publix (if they have those in VA, idk) or elsewhere. Well's Banana Bread is a staple on the pick-6 section everywhere in the South (GA, FL, AL).
TL;DR: I really like it, especially chilled. It's got an odd texture served warm, but crisp banana bread served cold (sounds weird, but trust me). It's possibly my favorite one-off beer (not IPA, ale, lager, regular beer, etc.). Fun character.
Thank you for the revised review. Actually was a four pack - nice change of pace. Actually only got to drink one and a half of them, as my wife stole the first half way through when I gave her a taste Friday, and got to the last two when I was drinking something else during the game.
