Hawks Sign Jarell Eddie to training camp roster

A couple of swing forwards on the roster already. While he can't unseat Sefolosha as the starter, he may be able to get quality minutes off the bench.

Best of luck to him. Hopefully, ltrepeter2000 can add more insight.

lets hope they never find out about his mixtapes

Wouldn't have expected Eddie to make the league before Malcolm Delaney got a shot. Still hard to believe he hasn't been on a roster yet. Best of luck to Eddie tho.

IIRC, I think he's said that he isn't going to take a flyer on an NBA slot at this stage. He's making good money in Europe and doesn't the see risk/reward as favorable.

While Delaney may have been the bigger name in college, there's a HUGE difference in how their skills translate to the NBA in addition to positional needs.

Delaney plays a position (PG, or more realistically, combo guard off the bench) that's stacked in the NBA. Eddie on the other hand, he fills a role that teams are spending big money on if you have the right skills. Long, athletic wing players who can shoot the corner 3 are in demand in today's NBA game and Eddie has the potential to fill that role for someone. If he can shoot upwards of 40% from the 3-point line and play solid defense, there's a spot for him in the NBA.

If you don't believe me, look at the contracts that Chandler Parsons and Trevor Ariza got in the offseason.

Problem is that Defense is his main problem.
Eddie did not play the best def while at VT. But he was a good wing rebounder though.

Tweedy can run like a dadgum antelope or whatever. I like to use scalded dog. Do antelopes lumber? Cheetah, OK. He runs like a cheetah. He's fast. - Bud Foster

Ariza was not a good comparison for Eddie. Look more at what the Lakers are giving Nick Young. His entire game relies on hitting the mid range jumper and three from the corner but he is still making $5.3 mil a season for the next four years. Young plays absolutely no defense whatsoever but still pulls a big check because he can score. Eddie is very comparable to Young and would likely take less money and be happy.

As for Malcolm Delaney, he isnt going to be coming back if I had to bet on it. The Rockets were trying to offer him a three year, minimum salary offer essentially to have him play in the NBA. He was the MVP of both the Bundesliga regular season and playoffs, leading his team to the championship. He signed a one year deal with PBC Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia this season for somewhere in the $6 million range is my understanding. Why come back to the NBA for $900K roughly when you can earn that scratch playing elsewhere.

I knew you were lurking somewhere just waiting for a bball forum topic.

Been a hectic couple months as I converted from contractor to government service and there are plenty of folks to fill the football space so unless I had something unique or interesting to say I have left football to the experts. No need to clutter things up.

Well, its good to have meaningful BBall posts during Football season. VT usually can't talk about it like most schools, but Buzz has bought a new energy about the sport. I love it. Football and BBall talk....at the same time.

Awesome info as always. Glad to hear he is doing well.

I wasn't really trying to compare Ariza and Eddie comparatively in skillsets, moreso that the NBA is paying a premium for the position both guys play. The SF talent pool in the NBA has shrunk as more teams are playing a stretch 4, as guys like Carmelo, Durant & LeBron are playing a small-ball power forward type of position.

But yeah, Young is probably a better comparison in skills to Eddie. I do think that with more effort he'd be a solid defender, and he may have to increase his defensive acumen to find a stable spot in the NBA.

Wanna talk hard to believe? After his freshman year I would have NEVER thought Erick Green had a shot at making it in the NBA, and he is in the best position out of all three of these guys

As far as being in the NBA, yes. Evidently Malcolm is making $6 mil this year playing in Russia. He's built a very solid rep in Europe hoops, and this was his reward. Also part of why he didn't sign with the Rockets last year. They wouldn't guarantee him what he desired, so he balled on in Europe.

Eddie should do good. Spurs could be a destanation for him if he doesn't make the Hawks regular season roster. Any Erick Green updates?

Eddie was cut by the Boston Celtics less than 24 hours after they signed him. Speculation is they signed him to benefit from his D-league status somehow. Don't ask me how any of that works, I still have trouble understanding protected draft picks.

Bottom line - Eddie is wthout employment in either the NBA, NBADL, or Euro ball as of right now. best of luck to him, it's a grind making it.
