The John Mackey Award goes to the nation's best collegiate tight end. Bucky is one of 2 freshmen on the current watch list.
The criteria for the award are as follows (from johnmackeyaward.com):
1. For John Mackey Award (JMA) and Watch List consideration a player should be a true tight
end in the style of John Mackey, play on the interior line with blocking responsibilities and
possess the potential to play tight end on the professional level.2. The JMA Selection Committee also considers other John Mackey qualities including, but not limited to, positive sportsmanship, good academic standing and leadership on and off the field.
3. As a rule, candidates that play at other positions (i.e. slot or split receivers, halfbacks or wide outs) more than at tight end, are not generally regarded true tight ends for JMA Selection Committees purposes. However, John Mackey Award Selection Committee members may nominate any player for the award, who in their estimation is worthy of consideration.
4. Towards the end of the regular college football season, the JMA committee members nominate candidates for consideration and the JMA Award winner is determined by committee voting.
5. The John Mackey Tight End of the Week, recognizing solely on-field receiving performance, is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment has no formal significance on t he final John Mackey Award selection process, however the JMA position qualifications also apply to the Tight End of the Week honor.

That is awesome and makes me ridiculously excited for the future with Bucky.
6. Must know how to do the Shmoney dance
Woot.
Now watch Bucky dance as he accepts his award !
If he remains Brewer's go-to guy inside the red zone, he might very well win. I'm totally happy with all that sentence portends!
He just needs to keep lining up as a TE and busting heads.
No, to win awards, he needs to keep catching TD passes. That's what makes ESPN highlights, and in turn...
His highlight film involves spectacular grabs far more than bruising style.
Use him as the Main Man and he will get his reward ...He is a very talented young man and has his Football future in front of him...I hope by the time he leaves VT that he has set a standard for TE's and breaks all the records.
Does Burnop still hold the TE reception & TDs record? Or has he been surpassed by anyone?
By default, as a Virginia Tech tight end, shouldn't he also be nominated for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award?
If Bucky wins they'll have to stretch the trophy....there's no way this little guy is 7'1"
Pretty sure it's impossible to not be on a watchlist when you are big enough to be seen from space.
For the record, here are Bucky's rankings among Power-5 and Independent teams' TEs. It's only among those teams because that's what I can easily see with my fantasy league being restricted to those players.
T-1st with 4 TDs
T-13th in Receptions with 17
8th in Receiving Yards with 234
