I will get my yellow colored handkerchiefs ready to dry the Irish's Eyes while they cry about all of the calls that go against them.
#Shotsfired
Like the Ohio State game, the media will declare VT the underdog until the Hokies shock the world again. Cant wait to finally watch Tech on NBC prime time TV.
Well I know where I am headed in 2016.
Also 2020 with @ Michigan, Wisconsin in Bburg, and @ Louisville will be an expensive year.
Whit needs to fix the ODU problem look at 2018:
Sept. 1 William & Mary Blacksburg, Va.
Sept. 8 at Old Dominion Norfolk, Va.
three @ ODU games and the series goes until 2025, ugggh that is 11 years from now, we will play them until I am 40. HOLY SHIT that is depressing! My midlife crisis is now beginning thanks to Jim Weaver. I will have children by then to which I will have to explain why we are playing ODU. That is not family friendly Weaver! Oh the horror!
I'll play ODU any day of the week if it means we aren't playing an Arkansas State, Bowling Green State, or a directional Michigan. That's an FBS game in a fertile recruiting ground. The value of that is worth the lower quality of opponent.
I kind of agree, but the problem is we have a mini - CAA + ECU schedule the following years...
2017 : Delaware + ODU
2018 : William&Mary + ODU
and then this mess...
2019 Charlotte/ODU/ECU
I get the point you're making but if it helps, ODU is FBS in Conference USA. I still wish we were challenging ourselves a little more competition-wise.
Charlotte is no longer on the schedule for 2019. The game was apparently dropped months ago silently as Charlotte began the move to FBS and thus increased the price tag for that game.
Is it common to even pay an FBS opponent for a matchup? For FCS, I understand, that's how those teams keep the lights on in many cases. But if you're at the FBS level, is that even reasonable?
Yes, you usually pay them some amount, especially if it's a 1-and-done deal. The price tag drops significantly when that becomes a home-and-home series, but the teams still get paid some to make it worth their while when it's a lower team. If it's 2 power-5 teams, don't expect any payment. But Power-5 vs Sun Belt, MAC, et al. will have some amount of money involved.
That's great and all but...
I don't know how anyone can be against 9 ACC games when the future schedules include the likes of Furman, Liberty, Delaware, William and Mary, Charlotte (not ACC championship Charlotte) and Richmond - often times overlapping the same years we play ODU.
The rationale was that if there are 9 games, every other year, a team would have more ACC away games than home games. Obviously, certain teams will have an advantage in certain years. I was originally opposed to the 8 game schedule, but after hearing this, I changed my opinion. 8 ACC games is fine, I just want to get rid of the stupid cross divisional rival.
I'm all for wiping out the stupid permanent cross over game...it would make a whole lot more sense to do a little bit of shuffling between coastal and atlantic to uphold some of the "important" rivalries and then go back to having 2 rotating games a year with the other division
Coastal: VT, UVA, FSU, GT, Duke, Pitt, Miami
Atlantic: Wake, UNC, NCSU, Clemson, Louisville, Cuse, BC
Pac 12 says hi (refs notwithstanding).
The problem has more to do with a large number of ACC teams having annual big non-conference rivalries. A move to 9 ACC games would mean 10 set-in-stone matchups against power-5 teams, with the occasional season of playing ND as well.
One conference (think it was the Pac-12) solved the problem of imbalanced home-away schedules by making it a divisional thing, where one year all teams in Division A get the extra home game and the other year all teams in Division B get the extra home game. That way your chances of winning your division, and therefore your conference, are not hurt by having an extra away game, as your competition is in the same boat.
Go to 10 ACC games. 2 good ooc games and a 1-aa "scrimmage," first come first serve in august.
That's 13 games. Unless there are plans to go to a bigger schedule that won't work.
I just assumed the 10th ACC game would be the ACC Champ Game. You can put it on your calendar!
These 1-aa games are stupid as competitive contests. Just move them
Into the slot of the last scrimmage. Sell tix by donation. Okay the 1-as team a couple hundred grand and donate the rest.
Too many conference teams not in a regular enough rotation. Need to reinvent the model.
Teams have a hard enough time selling tickets for the 1-AA games when they mean something. They'll have an even tougher time selling those tickets as a scrimmage. There's also the issue of injuries. It's not going to happen. The Power 5 conferences are more likely to stop playing 1-AA teams altogether.
But if you are adding another game who cares? Its additional money on the top, plus concessions and all the other crap. Just like another spring game as far as revenue is concerned. I tend to like this idea.
Fine, don't play them. It's stupid anyway.
Tell jmu they can be our scrimmage partner the third week if august every year. We will take contributions. They get half of what we collect. The other half go to paying the non rev athletes.
So, we have to wait 4 years for them to see the inside of Lane Stadium and be awed into submission?
From Andy Bitter:
PLEASE GET RID OF ECU I NEED A YEAR OFF
Please get rid of all of them not named Wisconsin.
Charlotte game's been canceled.
Interesting.
Not saying he is wrong, but the Charlotte game is still listed on the Hokiesports site.. if it had been cancelled months ago seems odd that nobody fixed it on the web page
I didn't even realize that we had ADDED Charlotte until just ten minutes ago. Whit is pretty quiet about scheduling teams. Of course, Weaver added most of these games before he left. All the ECU & ODU games, for sure. My quick scan looks like we are basically set on games through 2021, with only one opening for 2022 & 2023 each.
Charlotte was definitely a Weaver move. He added them before they had even played their first game.
Looking at our schedule that year, I'm cool with dropping them.
Oh sweet, ODU and ECU in the same year...
What is that, the handoff from one shitty situation of a long term lose-lose opponent to another? Yay
Playing in the ACC, I'd rather schedule an OOC game on the VA coast as opposed to another game in NC, we could do a lot worse than ODU
I disagree... I would rather scrap all these long series with Group of 5 members. They literally do nothing for us, and provide a stepping stone for these lesser programs to raise up to our level.
We beat ODU/ECU, great... Doesn't matter how good they are, we're expected to win and will get absolutely no credit for doing so, even if they're a great team. Lose that game, and it doesn't matter how great they are, you are going to be drawn and quartered in the media. It happened this year to us when we lost to ECU. Went from 17th to unranked by losing to a team that is still undefeated and pouring points on their opponent.
Both the ECU and ODU series should be outright canceled. If you want to schedule 2 for 1s here and there, have at it, but I'm tired of these long series that do nothing for us and provide every opportunity in the world for the other school to completely use us for their own gain.
First, ECU is not undefeated. They lost to South Carolina. Undefeated since beating us, yes, but not undefeated. Second, so what you're saying is rather than play ECU, a team you think we should beat, and risk losing on average maybe 20% of the time, you think we should play bigger name teams. So let's, instead of playing ECU, play a power 5 team. Of the other power 5 teams, I count 8 teams that would roughly be on equal standing to the quality of ECU. So 8 teams out of 50 others do we stand a better than 50% chance of beating. So more than likely, you want to play a game we will likely lose. On the other hand, you have a team which is in our recruiting territory that we can play and beat more often than not and has less financial impact with regards to travel and transportation where our fanbase can also be part of the game. The benefit of playing a lower team in the midst of tough out of conference games is that you can focus on execution and give guys a break that need one when you don't have a bye week. We all get it, you hate ECU, but playing them is not as negative as you've made it out to be inside your head. Does the long series suck? Yes. We shouldn't lock ourselves into long term contracts with teams UNLESS there is a significant benefit to it. ODU has that benefit. This is in the back yard of the kids we are constantly fighting with teams across the nation for. This is an up and coming program that will get better. Based upon your comments regarding kickoff times (where you've stated you don't care if nobody watches us as long as it's at a game time that you find pleasing) and our scheduling, I've come to the conclusion that your main concern is yourself and having what you want. I shouldn't have to say it, but you should know that there are bigger things than that and the people that are paid the big bucks to handle these things recognize that and act accordingly.
Your awesome rant aside, way to miss the point
I don't want to scrap ECU and ODU for power teams. Shit, I don't mind playing teams as good as ECU, but when we do win the games, I want us to get the credit we deserve for beating a legitimate good team. Last year, that didn't happen. Hell, every year we beat ECU that doesn't happen, but god forbid we lose the game, and we get dropped out of the polls completely. Give me a matchup with any team in any Power 5 conference that is going to be on the ranked/not ranked border every year and I'll be happy. Just switch it up a bit. No series longer than 2 or 3 games (a home and home or a 2 for 1 with us getting the 2) and I'm happy.
I absolutely loathe these long series. They do absofuckinglutely nothing for us, and they become the annual circled game on the calendar for our opponents. We view the games as a warmup to our conference slate, where we're running a vanilla playbook to not show anything to the likes of GT, UNC, Miami, etc and they view them as legitimate rivalries where they play their nuts off against us every year pulling every trick they can out of their playbook to get that statement win. And when we do win the games, the voters look at the game going "what do you want, a cookie, you beat ECU, who cares?".
If you don't see how this is a bad thing for us, I don't know what to tell ya.
You know, maybe we got dropped from the pools for just not being very good. We didn't look great against ecu, and people voted accordingly. And our play since has mostly backed that up. I know it's not your main point, but implying we shouldn't have dropped from the rankings seems a bit rich to me
But we beat Ohio State the week before! How quickly we all forget how awesome we are. We must be ranked for beating the number 8 team in the nation! /sarcasm
ECU is making a name for themselves this year. Will they likely slip back without Carden and Hardy? Most likely, but they are proving to be in the next tier below the Power-5 teams and honestly above many of the bottom Power-5 teams. Perception is based upon "what have you done for me lately" and in that sense, ECU hasn't done much mostly because the teams they beat haven't done much either. It's a vicious cycle that will eventually break itself much in the same way that Boise State earned respect for repeated success in the late 2000s.
IMO it's a risk reward issue. ECU is a tough team, but VT gets little national credit if we beat them. I'd rather schedule a game with higher risk and reward, or lower risk same reward (lots of other teams).
I agree about ECU, enough is enough.
However, the ODU series increases our exposure in that talent rich area. It allows kids who may not get a chance to get to Blacksburg, see VT play (or even better, see VT play multiple times in a single year). I would be more than happy to replace ECU with ODU.
Exactly. I'm originally from Norfolk and you can go into any sporting good store, Walmart, etc., and there is just as much UVA and whatever flavor of the month team gear as there is VT (and that was before ODU had football). Now that ODU has a football team, more people are excited to have a team that is close by to cheer for and not have to travel far to go watch a game and tailgate. I'd take playing ODU over ECU any day of the week and wish we played them more often in all the other sports as well. Considering the C-USA is mostly a pass happy/air raid type league and there are the athletes in that area that can really fit the system ODU runs, it is only a matter of time before they start getting those recruits and the football program there starts to really take off.
If VT is trying to recruit well on the coast of VA it only makes sense to play a game there, there aren't any power 5 teams there, so you take what you can get... the only other alternative would be to play a FCS team on the road
I hope some of these games are on a non-NBC channels or I am at these games. I am NOT listening to Mike Mayock commentate a Hokie football game
Cut the sound off & listen to Bill Roth & Burnop on the radio. The time lapse between the two is entertaining.
eh, I tried that before. Me personally, if I am watching it on tv, listening to the radio doesnt appeal to me.
Looking at our overall non-conference schedule the next few years was depressing, way too much ODU and East Carolina. Hopefully our new AD can find us ways out of those horrible series, get a little more excitement and variety in our schedules!
If the 2018 game gets moved to FedEx Field I will burn everything down.
No way we do that, we rake in soooo much more by having that game in Blacksburg. The reason the Cincy game was moved to FedEx was because they were the home team and at the time their stadium held about 40k and they weren't selling out most games. Typically Cincy would move these to Paul Brown, but the apathetic Cincy fans would likely not fill it and the bill would wipe out the profits. They sold it off to be hosted in FedEx knowing the whatever company organizing it would be willing to pay a premium and rely on Hokie attendance in their back yard. We went ahead and made Whit look like a genius by losing the game. So Whit made a pretty penny off of all the Hokies in attendance without looking like he cared more about the money than the win.
No, Notre Dame is more likely to move their home games -- see the Shamrock Series.
Beamer said after the 1991 (?) FSU home game that was moved to Orlando that VT would not do that again.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Boise State game originally supposed to be in Blacksburg? Or am I confusing them with someone else?
No, it was always a neutral site FedEx deal. What changed was the date. It was originally scheduled for October until ESPN threw a bunch of cash at both teams to make it the Labor Day game.
That's what it was, thanks.
Didn't he also say something about not wearing all orange ever again after an embarrassing loss in the 90s?
Besides, it doesn't make sense for VT to sell its home games to an NFL stadium, especially one with a big draw like Notre Dame.
Beamer has made several lockdown comments like that that were pretty quickly forgotten. He does what works for the situation, then tries to handle the media later. Sometimes better than others. Same as all other head coaches.
Weaver would have certainly sold the ND game to a 'neutral' site, because Weaver had ZERO concern for the fan base. Whit is far more informed and capable in the modern sports world. It will be nice to see us get Notre Dame into Lane, and Whit will keep it there.
So in 2016 we have the game in Bristol and a game in South Bend? Dang I better start saving money now.
Yup. I was hoping for a late September/early October game in South Bend so I could use it as an excuse to slide around the lake to go to the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. But, no go...
that would have been an epic trip no doubt.
