I am not a fan of the playcalling so far. Both tonight and last week we have played fearful. I haven't seen us play fearless on offense since Ohio State. Guess because we had nothing to lose in that situation. But fearless is the way to go if you ask me. Otherwise we have these games that slowly but surely see us get too far behind

I have never been more in shock at what I am seeing. Not in 2012, not in 2013. Never have I been more upset with VT football than this moment. I have always looked to the next couple years as special, but never in my worst nightmare would I believe that 2014 would be this bad. Beamer was wrong - we're not inconsistent. We're consistently awful on offense, and our injured defense is gassed already. I have never turned a VT game off early, but man this will test my fandom.

It just makes me sad. I'm not raging like some of the crazy people here. I'm not calling for Beamer's head, and I'm not smart enough to figure out how to fix the offense. Just...despondent. Maybe there will be a heroic comeback in the second half. Who knows? I've decided to keep the game on. I will never give up on this team, no matter how bleak it may seem. The D was on the field for the vast majority of that half, what exactly did you expect them to do? They were already thin, injured, and inexperienced. All they're asking of the offense is to sustain anything any once in a while.
A D can't carry a team if you're going to have them on the field all game, there's a breaking point.

I'm not shocked at the way this team is playing. You reap what you sow and pride comes before the fall. (I'm prepared for the hate) All of what we are seeing is due to a 4 plus year period of complacency.
-constant recruiting of undersized linemen on both sides of the ball (poor depth)
-Skills and ability at linebacker has been in a black hole since 2010 if not before. Making getting to the second level easier for opponents with big Olines.
-Resistant to change
-that overall feeling of lack of desire or fight from some of the coaching staff
-Relying on the illusion that 2* and 3* player can constantly be coached up to play at elite levels against elite teams
-The slow deterioration of "Beamerball" and reliance of big plays for motivation.
There is hope and the potential of turning the corner but there are 22 potential recruits watching this mess right now.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Hokies and will always bleed Maroon and Burnt Orange but what is on the field right now is not Hokies Football and it was all set into motion well before this team set foot on the field this season. Stop the excuses of being young and injuries. Because you know what they say about excuses; they are like buttholes, we all have them and they all stink. I'm tired of the smell and I think Frank's been smelling it for a while according to his famous "who farted" expression.

Really on an off-topic tangent here, but I've been undergoing the planning stages of a kitchen renovation the last week. Almost to the point that it's like another full-time job. Glad I have my step-sister and step-mom to help out with the colors and designs, but what are some good pieces of advice y'all might have? Especially for appliances? This kitchen is pretty much mid-1980s vintage.
Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If you're doing white cabinets then you really really have two choices for appliances - white or stainless. My suggestion is stainless because it breaks up the color pallette for you visually. Meaning - you don't want to look at your kitchen and just see a virtual wall of white. You want something to break it up. Ideally, you also want an occasional cabinet to extend higher or further into the kitchen to break up the lines of the cabinets. Your quartz looks like a very solid choice. I would advise against black appliances, if you're leaning that way, as they really tend to stand out too much with white cabinets. Black appliances only really work well when paired with dark cabinets. I hope that is helpful, and I hope you love your new kitchen!

Technically, no. I've just got 3 decades in the business and enough experience to 'have developed a good eye', as they say. I've worked with architects, builders, & design teams that whole time and you pick up the tips as you go along. There are some fundamentals to remember, and often some folks ignore them in an effort to follow certain trends. It's kind of like deciding where to place windows in a home. If you're smart about it, nobody ever notices, but they all just feel better when in a room or observing the home from outside.
Home construction or renovation can be some of the most stressful periods in a person's life. Glad you survived!

I'm a fan of the Whirlpool/Maytag brands, but I know many people who swear by the Samsung suite of appliances. I think that all comes down to personal preference, much like buying a vehicle. Most all perform nearly the same, but there are subtle cosmetic or accessory differences that catch people's eye. Hope it all goes well!

At first, I was really leaning towards the Frigidaire appliances (really like that smudge-resistant finish). But after looking over Consumer Reports , I see that Whirlpool is at the top, or near the top in reliability for every major kitchen appliance. My kitchen definitely doesn't need to be showroom top-of-the-line, but I don't want things to look nice enough and work efficiently. I like Samsung and LG a lot, but their reliability ratings don't seem to be as good as I expected. Decisions, decisions...

That level of quality is a big part of why I'm a fan of the Whirlpool family. If you don't know, they own Maytag now. I like the big % of domestic production by Whirlpool as well. It's not a deal breaker for me, but a nice bonus. The company also does huge amounts of support for charitable efforts like Habitat, Hurricane relief, just all types of stuff like that. That means something to me as well. I know that doesn't keep my milk any colder - ha! - but I like to reward companies that 'do good' when all other things are equal. I think they have clean lines in their appliances, and have just always found everything about them appealing.
Those are my thoughts, I'll share more if you like. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be pleased!

I wonder, what is everyone's opinions on the ventilation qualities of over-the-range microwaves (going to vent it outside)? Right now that is the plan; we're replacing a downdraft range, with overhead ventilation this time around. I know that that range hoods tend to be more effective, but I wonder if that will be necessary when we don't cook up a storm or entertain a lot?

I'm confused by your wording. Are you asking about using an overhead microwave with the venting & directing the venting outside as opposed to using a range hood that vents directly outside? If so, the range hood is better (real world) by a factor of 3X, probably. That being said, the microwave/vent combo is still 'adequate' if you don't do a lot of stovetop cooking that results in odors - aka frying bacon, etc. You can do just fine going that route. The other is preferable, but the combo unit is acceptable.
If you're into cooking, though, I would recommend using a single purpose range hood (no combo unit) and locating the microwave elsewhere as an in-cabinet unit. You know, with the short cabinet above.

I would have preferred a regular hood without the microwave, but since I wanted to move the microwave off the counter, and the microwave had the option of mounting it and venting outside, the decisions all lined up logically for me.
I would have done a regular range hood had I put the range on the island, but that didn't happen.

It was awesome, it was a nice 55 degrees out with no humidity. The first three miles were uphill...a little challenging, but coming back the same way was amazing. Made good time. (To me anyway) about 53 minutes for 6 miles.

I can't believe I'm defending myself here, but being honest. If duke Johnson tweaks his knee in the first quarter and doesn't rip us a new one, you all would have been happy. Duke is good but consistently did not get touched till he was past the second level. I could have ran through those holes for about a three yard average and I'm an overweight white guy. Miami would have put in the 230 lb backup and still run all over us.

If we don't secure a top recruiting class this year, and that means landing the likes of Sweat, Settle, and Dalton, then its probably time to start looking for Beamer's replacement. Actually Frank's 1992 team lost 5-6 games by about 7 points or less. They were incredibly unlucky. They were, by all rights, probably a 5-6 or 6-5 team. They just came out on the short end every time. That was a big part of what gave Dave Braine the comfort to only tell Frank he had to cut the loyalty crap and fire some assistants, instead of just firing Frank.
This team seems like it might be a little less than the previous two seasons. Actually, we were extremely lucky in 2012, having a winning streak to just make it to 6-6 regular season. This team seems similar, but certainly not holding any semblance of a winning streak. Making 6-6 again will be a challenge. Wake & BC, are the likelies. I've got zero confidence about the UVa game now. I want to hope, but I'd prefer to just not think that far ahead.

It appears that we actually did the cutesy 'Come out in white pants, then switch to maroon'. Is that so? It's a shame we didn't put as much focus on game play as we did our uniform selection.
Bud's defense got punked tonight. Manhandled. There's just no other way to describe it, and no excuses for it. It appears that the Pitt game might have revealed a couple of weaknesses in our run defense. Miami certainly learned from them.
I now have reinforced my initial concept from back in August - there was no starting QB named because Brewer severely underwhelmed our coaches once he arrived. Chad Morris did him a favor, but necessarily us. His arm is about as weak as I've seen on even a college QB. He has really good escapability, but he can't throw it accurately more than about 30 yards.
Marshawn looked healthy, but our running game is hurt by more than just a supposedly rebuilding offensive line.
We still lack discipline, and get pointless penalties. At least we were only bad in this category tonight, not horrible, like we had been.
Other than Wake, I don't see us being favored over anyone left on the schedule. And heaven forbid if we get behind - we were still stalling the play clock down below ten seconds on virtually every play, despite being down. That ingrained favorite behavior of Frank Beamer offenses should have died back in the 90's.
I think that covers most of it. This was a very embarrassing game.

At this point, I can't argue that viewpoint much. The problem is, though, that we're just very poor in every single aspect of offense right now. Every one. You can't even say Marshawn is a bright spot, because he's fumbled so much this season already. Our offense is just an embarrassment in every phase of the game. And yet, the biggest focus I saw for the offense tonight was - Run down the play clock in order to try to control Time Of Possession. Same old 1980's mindset that Frank has insisted on forever.

Don't get confused. Leal managed a drive against Miami's 2nd string defense that was playing prevent D. That has zero to do with actual full speed game play. It was just a depressing night and has been a sad season. Doesn't seem like we have any direction or identity, but keep making excuses that we are really young or have injuries. I'm scared for the future of this program and something has to be done. But through it all, I still love my school and wouldn't want to be anything other than a Hokie.

Yeah, we're done being nationally relevant and a regular Top 25 team while Beamer is here. I love the guy, he gives his heart and soul to VT and Blacksburg, but some of his decisions today showed how incredibly dated his techniques are.
For example, trailing by 24 he insisted on running and eating up game time instead of playing up tempo, long pass offense. That is trademark Beamer. Loefller's ineptitude and stupid playcalling certainly didn't help, but these problems have existed long before he came to Blacksburg.
I'm out of excuses. There is not even one single positive that can come out of this game (except maybe the fact that we have won all of our coin tosses). We failed to adapt for Pitt after a bye and did NOTHING to improve on the loss for today.
We got thrashed. In Blacksburg. On a Thursday night. All we need is for UVa to beat us and we've reached rock bottom.

The 4th and 2 at the beginning of the fourth quarter was the point when I left the game. Also... I think the defensive line was a big part of this loss. The interior was especially nonexistent throughout the game.

I thought the first half of the Pitt game was bad...then the first half of the Miami game happened.
Beamer's interview right before the half...."We had some success in the first half but penalties hurt us. We just need to play better football."
Its painful to watch...and embarrassing. The house was packed and the Enter Sandman was playing....Hokienation was out in force....and then we got our asses kicked.

I am not a fan of the playcalling so far. Both tonight and last week we have played fearful. I haven't seen us play fearless on offense since Ohio State. Guess because we had nothing to lose in that situation. But fearless is the way to go if you ask me. Otherwise we have these games that slowly but surely see us get too far behind

I have never been more in shock at what I am seeing. Not in 2012, not in 2013. Never have I been more upset with VT football than this moment. I have always looked to the next couple years as special, but never in my worst nightmare would I believe that 2014 would be this bad. Beamer was wrong - we're not inconsistent. We're consistently awful on offense, and our injured defense is gassed already. I have never turned a VT game off early, but man this will test my fandom.

The D was on the field for the vast majority of that half, what exactly did you expect them to do? They were already thin, injured, and inexperienced. All they're asking of the offense is to sustain anything any once in a while.
A D can't carry a team if you're going to have them on the field all game, there's a breaking point.

I'm not shocked at the way this team is playing. You reap what you sow and pride comes before the fall. (I'm prepared for the hate) All of what we are seeing is due to a 4 plus year period of complacency.
-constant recruiting of undersized linemen on both sides of the ball (poor depth)
-Skills and ability at linebacker has been in a black hole since 2010 if not before. Making getting to the second level easier for opponents with big Olines.
-Resistant to change
-that overall feeling of lack of desire or fight from some of the coaching staff
-Relying on the illusion that 2* and 3* player can constantly be coached up to play at elite levels against elite teams
-The slow deterioration of "Beamerball" and reliance of big plays for motivation.
There is hope and the potential of turning the corner but there are 22 potential recruits watching this mess right now.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Hokies and will always bleed Maroon and Burnt Orange but what is on the field right now is not Hokies Football and it was all set into motion well before this team set foot on the field this season. Stop the excuses of being young and injuries. Because you know what they say about excuses; they are like buttholes, we all have them and they all stink. I'm tired of the smell and I think Frank's been smelling it for a while according to his famous "who farted" expression.

Really on an off-topic tangent here, but I've been undergoing the planning stages of a kitchen renovation the last week. Almost to the point that it's like another full-time job. Glad I have my step-sister and step-mom to help out with the colors and designs, but what are some good pieces of advice y'all might have? Especially for appliances? This kitchen is pretty much mid-1980s vintage.
Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

No sh!t I'm doing a kitchen remodel, too. Ended up going with Zodiaq quartz and I'm working with the local Amish on the stained maple cabinets. Nice stuff.
If you're doing white cabinets then you really really have two choices for appliances - white or stainless. My suggestion is stainless because it breaks up the color pallette for you visually. Meaning - you don't want to look at your kitchen and just see a virtual wall of white. You want something to break it up. Ideally, you also want an occasional cabinet to extend higher or further into the kitchen to break up the lines of the cabinets. Your quartz looks like a very solid choice. I would advise against black appliances, if you're leaning that way, as they really tend to stand out too much with white cabinets. Black appliances only really work well when paired with dark cabinets. I hope that is helpful, and I hope you love your new kitchen!
Are you a designer by chance? I paid someone to help design my kitchen and I have a good design, but it was a full blooded clusterjumble the whole way through.
Technically, no. I've just got 3 decades in the business and enough experience to 'have developed a good eye', as they say. I've worked with architects, builders, & design teams that whole time and you pick up the tips as you go along. There are some fundamentals to remember, and often some folks ignore them in an effort to follow certain trends. It's kind of like deciding where to place windows in a home. If you're smart about it, nobody ever notices, but they all just feel better when in a room or observing the home from outside.
Home construction or renovation can be some of the most stressful periods in a person's life. Glad you survived!

I'm a fan of the Whirlpool/Maytag brands, but I know many people who swear by the Samsung suite of appliances. I think that all comes down to personal preference, much like buying a vehicle. Most all perform nearly the same, but there are subtle cosmetic or accessory differences that catch people's eye. Hope it all goes well!
At first, I was really leaning towards the Frigidaire appliances (really like that smudge-resistant finish). But after looking over Consumer Reports , I see that Whirlpool is at the top, or near the top in reliability for every major kitchen appliance. My kitchen definitely doesn't need to be showroom top-of-the-line, but I don't want things to look nice enough and work efficiently. I like Samsung and LG a lot, but their reliability ratings don't seem to be as good as I expected. Decisions, decisions...
That level of quality is a big part of why I'm a fan of the Whirlpool family. If you don't know, they own Maytag now. I like the big % of domestic production by Whirlpool as well. It's not a deal breaker for me, but a nice bonus. The company also does huge amounts of support for charitable efforts like Habitat, Hurricane relief, just all types of stuff like that. That means something to me as well. I know that doesn't keep my milk any colder - ha! - but I like to reward companies that 'do good' when all other things are equal. I think they have clean lines in their appliances, and have just always found everything about them appealing.
Those are my thoughts, I'll share more if you like. Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll be pleased!

I found a stainless counter depth french door GE fridge in scratch and dent along with the matching microwave. Bought the range and dishwasher to match.
I wonder, what is everyone's opinions on the ventilation qualities of over-the-range microwaves (going to vent it outside)? Right now that is the plan; we're replacing a downdraft range, with overhead ventilation this time around. I know that that range hoods tend to be more effective, but I wonder if that will be necessary when we don't cook up a storm or entertain a lot?
I'm confused by your wording. Are you asking about using an overhead microwave with the venting & directing the venting outside as opposed to using a range hood that vents directly outside? If so, the range hood is better (real world) by a factor of 3X, probably. That being said, the microwave/vent combo is still 'adequate' if you don't do a lot of stovetop cooking that results in odors - aka frying bacon, etc. You can do just fine going that route. The other is preferable, but the combo unit is acceptable.
If you're into cooking, though, I would recommend using a single purpose range hood (no combo unit) and locating the microwave elsewhere as an in-cabinet unit. You know, with the short cabinet above.

I would have preferred a regular hood without the microwave, but since I wanted to move the microwave off the counter, and the microwave had the option of mounting it and venting outside, the decisions all lined up logically for me.
I would have done a regular range hood had I put the range on the island, but that didn't happen.

It was awesome, it was a nice 55 degrees out with no humidity. The first three miles were uphill...a little challenging, but coming back the same way was amazing. Made good time. (To me anyway) about 53 minutes for 6 miles.
Nice, my distance usually only entails about 5 miles. I figure if someone/something is still chasing me after 5 miles, then it's meant to be.

Al Golden keeping him in the game baffles me as well, but if I remember correctly our offense only scored 6 points the entire game so the argument that we might have won if he was injured in the 1st quarter is out the window.

Duke is good but consistently did not get touched till he was past the second level. I could have ran through those holes for about a three yard average and I'm an overweight white guy. Miami would have put in the 230 lb backup and still run all over us.

Yes I realize there is a 2 win team in the 90s during this time but that team never had hope. This one did and they absolutely blew it.
If we don't secure a top recruiting class this year, and that means landing the likes of Sweat, Settle, and Dalton, then its probably time to start looking for Beamer's replacement. Getting absolutely embarrassed at home in a primetime game like this is completely unacceptable and yet its becoming commonplace.

Actually Frank's 1992 team lost 5-6 games by about 7 points or less. They were incredibly unlucky. They were, by all rights, probably a 5-6 or 6-5 team. They just came out on the short end every time. That was a big part of what gave Dave Braine the comfort to only tell Frank he had to cut the loyalty crap and fire some assistants, instead of just firing Frank.
This team seems like it might be a little less than the previous two seasons. Actually, we were extremely lucky in 2012, having a winning streak to just make it to 6-6 regular season. This team seems similar, but certainly not holding any semblance of a winning streak. Making 6-6 again will be a challenge. Wake & BC, are the likelies. I've got zero confidence about the UVa game now. I want to hope, but I'd prefer to just not think that far ahead.

Bud's defense got punked tonight. Manhandled. There's just no other way to describe it, and no excuses for it. It appears that the Pitt game might have revealed a couple of weaknesses in our run defense. Miami certainly learned from them.
I now have reinforced my initial concept from back in August - there was no starting QB named because Brewer severely underwhelmed our coaches once he arrived. Chad Morris did him a favor, but necessarily us. His arm is about as weak as I've seen on even a college QB. He has really good escapability, but he can't throw it accurately more than about 30 yards.
Marshawn looked healthy, but our running game is hurt by more than just a supposedly rebuilding offensive line.
We still lack discipline, and get pointless penalties. At least we were only bad in this category tonight, not horrible, like we had been.
Other than Wake, I don't see us being favored over anyone left on the schedule. And heaven forbid if we get behind - we were still stalling the play clock down below ten seconds on virtually every play, despite being down. That ingrained favorite behavior of Frank Beamer offenses should have died back in the 90's.

I'm done with Brewer. He needs to be permanently benched. Its time to see what the others can do.
At this point, I can't argue that viewpoint much. The problem is, though, that we're just very poor in every single aspect of offense right now. Every one. You can't even say Marshawn is a bright spot, because he's fumbled so much this season already. Our offense is just an embarrassment in every phase of the game. And yet, the biggest focus I saw for the offense tonight was - Run down the play clock in order to try to control Time Of Possession. Same old 1980's mindset that Frank has insisted on forever.
Freshman receivers, tight ends. Those are some good aspects of our offense.
Not when they're underutilized or busy catching screen passes for 3 yd gains.

The thing that has constantly been bothering me these last couple of weeks especailly tonight is when things aren't going right and mistakes were being made why is Brewer not taking charge why whenever I see him on camera he's flashing a smile and looking like he doesn't have a care in the world. In my opinion I don't care who the starting QB is next week but I want one who's gonna be a leader and take charge and light a fire under some guys asses cuz if the QB doesn't seem to care when we are down by 30 don't expect the people around him too either with that being said I thought Leal did a hell of a job at the end there even gainst backup Miami players leading the drive to score my hats off to him and the rest of the boys for not giving up
Don't get confused. Leal managed a drive against Miami's 2nd string defense that was playing prevent D. That has zero to do with actual full speed game play. I'm not defending Brewer, I'm just saying take nothing from Leal getting playing time. I am glad he did, but there is nothing positive to take from it, other than he didn't throw an INT for a pick-6.
Yeah, they all said in the post game that Leal was put in because they wanted to get him some reps.

I'm glad they did that, and wish it had been done last season as well. If the starter gets injured - as we saw in the Sun Bowl - having a backup who's never played previously is a liability. I'm happy for Leal getting the TD pass, even if it was pointless for all other purposes.

It was just a depressing night and has been a sad season. Doesn't seem like we have any direction or identity, but keep making excuses that we are really young or have injuries. I'm scared for the future of this program and something has to be done. But through it all, I still love my school and wouldn't want to be anything other than a Hokie.

Yeah, we're done being nationally relevant and a regular Top 25 team while Beamer is here. I love the guy, he gives his heart and soul to VT and Blacksburg, but some of his decisions today showed how incredibly dated his techniques are.
For example, trailing by 24 he insisted on running and eating up game time instead of playing up tempo, long pass offense. That is trademark Beamer. Loefller's ineptitude and stupid playcalling certainly didn't help, but these problems have existed long before he came to Blacksburg.
I'm out of excuses. There is not even one single positive that can come out of this game (except maybe the fact that we have won all of our coin tosses). We failed to adapt for Pitt after a bye and did NOTHING to improve on the loss for today.
We got thrashed. In Blacksburg. On a Thursday night. All we need is for UVa to beat us and we've reached rock bottom.

The 4th and 2 at the beginning of the fourth quarter was the point when I left the game. Also... I think the defensive line was a big part of this loss. The interior was especially nonexistent throughout the game.
If you thought the 4th & 2 at the beginning of the fourth quarter was bad, you would have loved the part where, with seconds left in the game and us down 30-6, Frank decides to do an onside kick. Because, you know, we weren't going to give up.
I thought the first half of the Pitt game was bad...then the first half of the Miami game happened.
Beamer's interview right before the half...."We had some success in the first half but penalties hurt us. We just need to play better football."
