5* defensive End and the number player in the state of Virginia, Josh Sweat received his Under Armour All-American jersey and gave an update interview. Josh said he wants to play for a team with the best defensive backs, corners, LBs; so that when everybody is covered that gives him a chance to get to the QBs. Considering VT has some of the best corners, DBs, Josh would have his chance to get to the QBs if he commits to the Hokies.
Get well soon Josh Sweat! Go Hokies!

Gee, its like he's actively saying he wants to come to VT.
This does sound promising, we need you young man!
Bud Foster: *Ahem*
All it would take is one visit with all the Fullers to convince him.
Those guys can do everything.
Or just be sitting there polishing his Coordinator of the Year trophies as Sweat walks in
You know... if we had a commenter named "euphemismguy" this is exactly the kind of post he'd regularly make.
Maybe it's just me but the positioning of these trophies just looks...wrong.
I know, right - umpire and catcher? What is this, baseball?
Yea...umm...that's what I was thinking too....
I dare each and every last one of you to go say any of this to Bud's face.
If there's anything left of you afterward, report back on how the meeting went.
Is that the Joe Paterno trophy for coaching excellence that Beams won in its inaugural and possibly only year that has since been put in the back of the VT athletics storage locker?
LB worries me a little, our boys are definitely not the best in the country there. A Healthy F&F at corner next year though? Best duo in the country in my very biased opinion!
LBs will be a step-up next year (maybe best since XA and VH), especially once AM learns where to be and how to set-up the defense.
Moto better learn that fast. Ummmm, within 8 hours from now.....
We have the best LB in the country... he's just on our roster as a RB, cause at Virginia Tech, converting players is what we do best!
I knew JC Coleman would eventually find his calling.
AJ Hughes. LB/RB/P.
Holland Fisher was the number 0ne prep player in the country last year. Hes gonna make a great LB/DB/CB in the future. The team also has Raymon Minor, The Edmunds brothers and other incoming freshmen. They just need more experience in Bud Foster system.
Agreed this is good news it seems. I just wish FSU wasn't one of the other teams in his top 3, their DB's aren't too shabby either.....
Did anyone happen to read the comment section of that article?
There was a guy going on that it wasn't "right" for Sweat to get an athletic scholarship and that it should go to a more deserving player that didn't get injured. I hope he was just trolling, because thats some prime time dumb there.
you must be new to the ESPN comment sections!
According to an interview with Sweat's father in today's (Norfolk) Virginia-Pilot newspaper, Josh wants to be a two sport college athelete, participating in track throwing the discus...

Throwing QB's around should be good practice.
Our Field coaches are really good. Look at our pole vaulters and hammer throwers. I bet we have decent discuss coaching as well. That could help tip the scales to VT. Cool!
So he wants a team of All-Americans at every position behind him? He does realize that when he is rushing the QB into crappy throws, that FAINTs will be racking up and taking him off the field right? oooooh maybe we could have SAINTs, Settle and Sweat AINTs!
Sweat wants to race USAIN Bolt and compete against Lebron James in B-ball. He should join the Hokies since they will play Lebron's team OSU on prime time TV at Lane stadium next year.
I've always wondered what recruits like Josh Sweat say to their family and friends while watching games like this.
" if the number one DT and the number one safety from the state of va last year went to the worse team in the ACC to help them out, why cant I head to Blacksburg and help Bud foster and his defense out that really needs DE" said Josh Sweat to his family .
Any recruit that lists us as a favorite is going to have 10 programs in his ear. The reality is our program / coaching cannot withstand that kind of scrutiny. We're going to be better off running at the back of the pack and surprising.
VT reality:
An OC that is unproven.
A DC that uses a scheme relying upon undersized guys in the front seven, putting pressure on the back four, which makes them very skilled and marketable.
Offense... we send guys to the NFL despite what we put them through.
Defense... no path to the league unless you're playing back four.
London / UVA is saying that Virginia/NC needs a better alternative than VT.
We could have upgraded our system(s), but we have stayed static for far too long. Whichever local team dominates VA/MD/NC area for talent will win an MNC. With all the talent UNC had they have probably come closest, they just didn't have good coaching / player control / execution.
I used to think it was us. If Whit doesn't make this transition happen, I actually don't think it will be. It might hurt, but its time to look in the mirror and face what we are. A modestly successful program that could never take the next step on defense or offense (outside of our defensive back four); incapable of producing NFL ready talent because we have a system that is collegiate, at best.
Wow! Negative Nancy...Debbie Downer...
What we are is a program that has won 4 ACC titles since joining the league. Even when the program finished at the bottom 25 in recruiting, the Hokies are always competing and going to bowl games annually. Imagine if the Hokies had top recruiting classes like other schools. They would not have wasted those talents. The hokies are a program successful program that is going through a developing stage with a young football team. They just need to keep fighting along and putting the pieces together. GO HOKIES!
Lets just hope players like Sweat see more promise in this team than the players who suited up for us tonight showed.
That was one of the most pathetic all around performances from a VT squad in the history of the program.
Sam Rogers played his friggin tail off for us so I certainly do not agree te entire team played poorly. If you want to suggest that the offensive line took a thirty minute nap to begin the game, Brewer is having some mental and physical issues at the quarterback position and that turnovers from our rbs are problems then I'm with you there but spare me the everyone played awful tonight stuff.
Duke Johnson had 250 yards tonight
Spare me the defense played well mantra. It doesn't apply to tonight's game
The D played as well as could be expected considering the Offense refused to let them sit down for most of the game. This game could have been much, much worse than it was.
Johnson had 286 of the U's 456 (63%). Man, if we have just contained him we win. yes another U RB got 115, but no one else did anything for UM. The QB was 7 for 16 for christ sake. The U's offense was only good through Duke, that's it. The Hokie D is missing too many key guys. Plain and simple.
Also, Juice had 100 net yards folks... We need to get our passing game back. No passes in the middle seams at all the entire game. Hmmmm, that was working well with Hodges and Byrn before, we abandoned that last night. Why?
So basically what you're saying is that Miami was going to feed the ball to one guy all game long, and we knew that one guy was going to get the ball all game long, and we gameplanned to stop that guy all game long... He puts up 286 total yards of offense against us (with the other RB getting 115, for a total gashing of 401 yards gained by Miami's 2 running backs).
Look, I know our offense sucked, but you don't do that on defense and then turn around and pat yourself on the back for a good game. 401 total yards gained by 2 players that we knew we had to stop is horrendous defensive play, there's really no other way to describe it. As a unit, they completely and utterly failed at stopping the run last night, and deserve all the blame they will get for it over the next week.
I don't disagree with you and didn't say that the D was good. I was pointing out some facts to go with all the hysteria around here today. I just think we should have sold out to the Miami running game and we didn't.
if uva can get 5-stars after their last few seasons, I still like our chances.
Amen to that.
No where in the above post did I mention the defense played well. However, to play devil's advocate:
- our best defensive player who happens to play a critical position in stuffing the run is out for the year
- the leader or our defense and most experienced veteran who lines is up and organizes the front 7 calls is out an as of last week we have essentially a rookie playing that mlb spot which is also critical in stopping the run game
- the offense sustained pretty much nothing the first half--and with the turnovers you could argue nearly the entire game.
- Duke Johnson is heisman caliber and will be playing lots of Sundays
Now, 250+ is a lot of yards and the defense has it's own problems (missed tackles, gap fits, over pursuit at times, etc.) but they're not the root of our team's current issues nor are they the main reason we have 4 losses. Additionally, some semblance of a sustained offense (like the no huddle out of the half drive) would likely have led to a completely different game, one in which I'm rather certain Duke doesn't explode for over 250 yards. But I guess I agree to disagree.
The D isn't the worst part of our team, for certain.
But we need to stop pretending like they are anything special this year. They have earned their share of the blame.
Absolutely they had a terrible outing last night versus the run. All I'm saying is if our defense was the equivalent of our offense for the entirety of this season, we would probably be staring at a one win (or winless) Hokies team right now. Our front seven is banged up and it's obvious we are struggling, and we knew coming into the season that we would struggle against more physical, running teams. And Duke Johnson is certainly one of the est rbs in the NCAAs. But what kills me is the idea that we are losing games on the backs of the defense, which I believe is false. Now, they are NOT winning us games the last couple weeks, that's for sure, but I really do believe--but I guess there's no way of knowing for sure--that if the offense could even play a bit better, say around 50-60 out of 118 or so NCAA teams at an average level (minimizing turnovers, reduce penalties by 30-50%, begin games with a bit more success/consistency), we would be looking at a 3-0 record in the ACC at the moment. But yes, I agree this is not a vintage Bud Foster defense with the likes of Facyson, Maddy, and Chase out. Losing Maddy on an already thin d-line crushed us, and with Chase now out it hit us THAT much harder. Still, I point to the OSU game as an example of what our defense could do when the offense does just enough to provide some breathing room for Bud's unit--even though we had a healthy Maddy and Chase for the shoe.
