Coaches lost it in the first half for us. Players lost it for us in the second. Simple as that. I'm in Germany and this is the second week in a row where I've asked myself, "why the f*** did I stay up for this game?"get it together Hokies!

I'm in Germany as well, and I'm asking myself similar questions.
Should've just went to Chuck's in K-town.
We were still trying to establish the run down 24-0 in the second half
Getting very tired of the vt offensive philosophy. Down 4 scores in the second half is not when you should be trying to get the running game going, but there we were acting like morons without a fucking clue. We deserved this beatdown and it pisses me off to admit that.
I lay the blame solely on Beamer for that one. That has been his offensive philosophy for years, to run the ball down late in the game. The problem is that DOESN'T FUCKING WORK WHEN WE'RE 24 POINTS BEHIND. It was SO SO SO infuriating seeing the same goddamn screen and run again and again and again.
We have a horrible OC coupled with a HC way past his prime. I hope we can keep Bud on the team, he must feel so frustrated now with his defense unable to carry the pathetic excuse for an offense we have.
Yes, I'm mad. I think it's important to be mad, that's how change comes about, we cannot settle for this mediocrity and irrelevance.
call me a fool, but I still say there are worthwhile things to play for this season. I definitely want this team to get the beneficial experience of bowl season, even if it is the terrible justinbieber.com bowl. When it comes down to it, I'd rather they have the extra practices than not.
I actually kind of hope we tank the rest of the season and miss a bowl. Frank needs a fire lit under his ass and we desperately need it to happen. This coaching staff is too complacent with poor performances and something needs to be done to correct it. The last time Frank legitimately felt heat the team rose from the ashes and became the powerhouse we grew to love.
We are the Coastal bottom feeder right now. We are in last place. It doesnt get worse than this.
Frank needs to watch every game after this season in a box seat in Lane Stadium
Oh I dunno... wait 'til we lose to loluva and miss out on a bowl game.
Right...we might as well tank and get a better draft pick.
F that noise. I'm still hopeful that we will make a bowl and beat uva. I think CFB and the entire coaching staff will still feel that heat, they know we've looked like a hot mess so far this year and we have zero chance at even competing for the division.
I really hope we'll be better considering how goddamn horrible we are right now. A ridiculous statement by Beamer, he needs to show some confidence and fire to the public as well now.
he left off the last part of Beamers quote.....next year
all kidding aside he's write because you can't really get any worse than that. Hopefully we can have a game without a turnover this year. At least the penalties were lower.
*right, sorry :P
The following has been ABYSMAL pretty much all season outside of the OSU game:
Offensive
- game preparation
- penalties
- turnovers
- inconsistency at QB & O-Line
There, in a nut shell, are the problems. Much of it can be attributed to the number of freshmen playing and/or poor past recruiting at certain positions (hint: o-line).
It will take time. Nothing we can do about that. What I'm interested in knowing is how practices and game prep happen, because I have no clue how it's possible to play that well in ge one AT the shoe and then start games like how we have been. My second question is what anybody thinks of Leal moving forward as it seems Brewer could be in his own head as he has missed some easy and big opportunities in critical situations in games these last couple weeks now. Not to suggest Leal would be better but just curious the thoughts based on his very limited action.
Game preparation is what has stuck out to me. For anOSU you heard about extra walk throughs and there was such a sense of urgency. I think that has been a missing element all season.
Well, I think we've won all coin tosses so far, so we have that going for us which is nice.
Is it overreaction-ary of me to say Scot Loefler has had his chance at VT and blew it? Tonight was kinda the last straw
I'll continue to beat this drum: you can not fire Loeffler without canning Beamer along with him. For one, I believe a HC that wiffs on 2 straight OC hires should not be trusted with a 3rd (it's already 3 if you count O'Cain). Second, who wants to coach for Beamer when he is this close to the end?
Basically, and Beamer isn't getting "Canned" anytime soon. He's spent the last two decades earning the right to leave on his own terms, and if he chooses to steer the streamliner into the iceberg, there isn't a whole lot we can do about it.
Plus, getting rid of Loeffler right now doesn't really help anything. Installing a brand new system with a new guy after you just did so two years ago? You're not even going to know what you have for two years, and I don't think Frank is sticking around much longer than that.
When Frank picked Loeffler, he effectively picked the guy who he was going to ride into the sunset with, so we've got both of them for at least another two years. The best we can do at this point is hope it really is a talent issue and will improve next year, and/or the defense becomes so dominant that it doesn't matter. There's literally no other choice.
I agree with most of your points except "you aren't going to know what you have for two years". There are plenty of examples of new O coordinators coming in to the college game and showing improvement, sometimes even significant improvement, during year 1. By year 1, there are even more examples.
My two scenarios are:
1) the talent level that Loeffler inherited, specifically the O line, is even worse than I originally thought
2). Or, which I think is the more likely answer which is Loeffler has some issues. I'm not saying he is terrible but there are issues, maybe his system is too complicated, takes too long to learn, etc. I don't claim to know the exact problem but clearly there is one. I don't think the offensive talent at VT right now is as bad as the results are indicating
The second "by year 1" should be "year 2"
Oops. Must Still be some booze in me
We have tons of talent at the skill positions, which is exciting. We have had big problems on O-line. Those guys simply aren't getting it done right now. Outside of Wyatt Teller (who is still developing), I don't know that I could name one of the guys that I think has done a really good job. Note: not questioning heart, effort, or team spirit, just critiquing the on-field result here.
I was watching some highlights the other day from happier years (2000-2002) and I noticed something simple. On every play, the O-line held its ground or pushed forward. It seems to me that every play we've had this year (and honestly for a long time), the line moves backwards immediately. Of course, highlight videos are showing highlights, but the absolute inability of our guys to push people out of the way is very sad.
Calling all O-line recruits! Let's hope some of the guys we signed last year can work their way onto the field next year and live up to their potential.
I also have serious questions for Loeffler. Last night was baffling on many levels, but I'm still trying to organize my thoughts on that debacle.
"I'm not saying he is terrible"
I'll say it for you...he is terrible.
I won't get into the whole 'Earned the right to leave when he wants' discussion, that's moot at this point. Frank will be here for the 2016 season regardless, so that's a discussion for down the road.
There is a point to be made, though. As I watched last night, I thought, for the first time in Frank's entire career - 'Beamer might actually get rid of Loeffler...' I'm not saying that Frank should, but it might happen. It would be a disastrous mistake for two reasons. First, no matter what some might say, there is now a clock on the end of Frank's tenure. I'm not saying this season kind of clock, but a clock nonetheless. Anyone who would care to interview for the job as Frank's OC would absolutely have a foremost thought of - 'This guy may retire in two years, or four years. But he's definitely not going to be here long...'
My second point about a new OC is this - the same interviewee would also be thinking - 'This guy (Frank) won't let me run my offense, it's got to be his clock killing slow down rush first philosophy...' which wold be a resume killer for the guy to move on after Frank's retirement, whenever that would be.
So, summary, no quality OC is going to want to work for a short timer head coach for 1-4 years and they certainly wouldn't want to work for him if they also were forced to run the clock killing run first type of offense that the overwhelming majority of college football has abandoned. As a result, it would be a mistake to label Loeffler the scapegoat and dismiss him.
It's quite the bind we find ourselves in, and it will only get worse in other facets of the program as we near the end of Frank's tenure.
Temple ran the Ball. He tried and failed at Auburn. Same here.
Why wouldn't that be his philosophy? Because he was Chad Henne's QB coach?
Loeffler is a run first OC. He would not have been hired if he wasn't.
The season right after Auburn kicked out Loeffler (2012, where they came in 115th total offense), they had 2013, where they reached an NC and had number 11 total offense, so I disagree that it takes 2 years for an OC to set up a good system to work with.
I think any coach would be willing to coach under a legend. Just my opinion.
That's kind of like saying "why would someone want to work with Bill Gates after he's retired from Microsoft"
For the record, Jimbo Fisher came to FSU in 2007, became the Head-Coach-In-Waiting immediately, and took over in 2010. I don't want to see us get into a Head-Coach-In-Waiting situation, but it is not unheard of to pull in a coach you are eyeing as the next head coach in a situation where you have a guy nearing retirement. Then you can mentor him and get him adjusted to your school before throwing him into the fire.
I believe James Franklin was the coach in waiting at MD, but then went to Vandy before coming up here to PSU.
Would have been better if MD would have just made him the coach.
Jimbo's is the only Coach In Waiting arrangement that has worked. Every single other one failed. Trying to find someone who is willing to come in as Frank's replacement while Frank still has the ability to supervise his performance as a staff member? Nobody would want to do that. Nobody any good at least.
Franklin would have worked at Maryland if they actually allowed it to happen, and Muschamp can't be faulted too much for the shitshow Meyer left him.
Muschamp was the Coach In Waiting for Mack Brown at Texas, then came to Florida as head coach when Meyer 'retired'. So, the Texas experiment failed, then he has not performed as expected at Florida on top of that.
I just hope to God that the loyalty to a fault bullsh*t is a thing of the past.
Nowww I see why people were getting so pissed off 5 years ago while I was busy defending Beamer's judgment of our situation in decline. After all, we still had 10 wins, and if he didn't see anything wrong, then I didn't see anything wrong. Oops.
Ask least Leal played decently when called upon, granted against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Maybe he will win the job back and light a spark for the rest of the season? You guys can still make my 8-4 prediction, I have confidence in you!
Wow, some over-reaction on these threads this AM.
1. Yes, the game sucked, yes the coaches blew the first half. That needs attention, and quick.
2. If we hadn't fumbled so much in the 3rd quarter I think the 4th qtr starting score would have been 24-14 with 15 minutes to go and a much more fired up team. Under that scenario it would have been very possible to get 2 more scores and at least make a game of it and possibly win.
3. From point #2 above the run mentality of the 3rd qtr was fine if it was executed by the players. Jerome Wright was not prepared. When he fumbled in the midst of the U DL he was carrying the ball like a loaf of bread - big mistake.
4. We have a very young team and they will easily be affected by events like the 3rd qtr last night. It showed in the 4th qtr.
5. Brewer has an issue with his thought processing and confidence. He throws late and his accuracy on throws over 15 yds is very poor. Don't know what happened with him since anOSU, but he needs to get a seat and do some soul searching and work on his mental preparation. This may have led to the run mentality as well. Its Leal's turn. [What's Motley's status now?]
6. Whom among us could coach a team with this many injuries to key players at almost every skill position after setting the plan for the entire season around the starters you had whom are not able to play right now?
I just see a lot of hand wringing and reactionary bus throwing of coaches after less than a few hours after a bad game. I'm sure some of that is bourbon induced. Does anyone here make big decisions after an evening of drinking? Cooler minds need to prevail. Change is required, but it needs to be better thought out than simply getting rid of both Beamer and Loeffler. Yea, that would be a real good message to send to the team and recruits (sarcastica/)...
Purebred agreement. I've seen some people talking about how we were trying to establish the run in the 3rd quarter and that they didn't like it. I was fine with it.
On the drive where Marshawn fumbled at the 2, I noticed we ran the exact same running play six times in a row and gained 4-8 yards on each carry, with multiple consecutive first downs (this was really really easy to see on the sky cam view, as Marshawn ran through the gap between the center and the right guard every. single. time.) It kept working, and it kept working well.
Without the three fumbles, we may have been able to put up a few scores before Miami made it 30. Had that happened, this game would have been ... something other than what we saw.
It also looks like the Beamers are Even Stevens. A few good kick returns and a blocked extra point, so special teams played ok. But the running backs really...dropped the ball...tonight. Pun delivered with prejudice. Maximum, maximum prejudice.
But that doesn't matter, the fact is that we fumbled. Three times in a row. We can say all the 'what ifs' we want, but this same problem happened last week against Pitt. This is a coaching problem and we didn't get unlucky. I would understand if it was a one time thing, but the fact that it happened 3 times in a row was too much and can't be dismissed.
Agreed and legged, but not my point. I'm just stating that the disagreement with running in the 3rd quarter is, in my opinion, unfounded.
Ah ok, gotcha. I guess you're right in that case, the game plan was working rather smoothly but screwed up because of the fumbles.
We have reached a critical turning point in the season. Winning the Coastal is near impossible, if not impossible; I haven't taken the time to figure that one out yet. This is the loss that is extremely sobering for the seniors. For a team that seems to lack leadership, especially with Maddy and Williams out, this is a big turning point. The last two seasons, we have much better leadership, especially on offense with LT3.
The coaches have some things to figure out, but this team needs some leaders on the field and in the huddle. This has got to come from the seniors first. Jarrett, Bonner, and on offense, Wang. I know Brewer wants to be a leader for this team, but he seems defeated. I hope we can find the leadership somewhere, or else we may be headed for a losing season.
The seniors have to decide that there is still a lot to play for, 8-4, 11-0 against LOLUVA, let's win a bowl game!!
I know one senior who has a lot to play for, and we saw a brief cameo at the end of the game last night. He may be what the team needs. Idk if he is or not, but I hope the coaches aren't afraid to make that decision.
I am not going to make any excuses for the team or for Beamer.
The fact is, the coaches aren't getting it done.
In any other job, if you don't get it done, you don't keep your job.
Loyalty is a fine quality, but in excess it fills graveyards.
Say goodbye to all our recruits. So embarrassing.
