What will Hokies basketball record be this season?

Ok, guys and girls. It is time to put your thinking caps on and predict this season's record. We have a total of 31 games if I count correctly, I know we are all enthused with the beginning of the Buzz era. I am going with 16-15 with our weak non- conference schedule I believe we should win at least 11 of those with 5 conference wins. Feel free to ridicule and make your prediction.

You know what... This is one of those seasons where I'm not really looking for how many wins we have. After the last 2 years, I just want to see a team that has a whole heck of a lot of compete in them and one that has the ability to put the fear of god in a good team or two towards the end of the season when they've had a while to play together.

We might only win 15 games or so, but I have a sneaky suspicion we'll knock off at least one team that, on paper, we have absolutely no business beating. By the end of the basketball season, we'll be feeling real good about the future of this program.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It's easy to predict another less than mediocre season so I'm going with 19-12 with an opportunity to go dancing with a solid run in the ACC tourney

....Hokies

I think we win two games nobody expects, and lose two games that have fans posting "Buzz has to go" threads on the internet.

There will always be people looking to fire the guy in charge at the first sign of trouble. That will not change with basketball, and I predict we'll see that rear its ugly head by mid-January. Heck, GobblerCountry was calling it a horrible hire the second it was announced.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Wasn't Gobbler Country dude the same guy that got fired for insulting ECU?

I was so tired of their consistent negativity, even under the previous 'owners' years ago. It sometimes felt like I was reading HD in the ESPN ACC blog...

I see interesting headlines on Hokie stuff on yahoo, then I see it's linked from GC and just move on.

Just so you all know, it's under new management since the ECU fiasco now, and the articles are much better.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

May be better but does not compare to anything done here, TKP rules!

This is not UCLA or Kentucky. If Buzz struggles, people are realistic enough to know that he is rebuilding a team that struggled mightily last year. I'd be surprised to see anything but praise for Buzz; his track record warrents it.

The Dude Abides

I'm going to guess that this was all a slight at the current situation of our football team and the fans. Nobody is realistically going to call for a coach to be fired in their first season.

Yeah you would have thought that with the football team, but people were calling for Loeffler to be fired last year.

There is a very vocal minority that expects immediate results with a coaching change. I guarantee we will see some (by no means overwhelming, but it'll be there, and we'll likely be dealing with it on here) grumblings from the vocal minority that Buzz wasn't the right hire for this program by the midpoint of the ACC schedule, at the latest.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I just don't know. Really, I'm just looking for any improvement at all. Getting over the 10 win mark would feel like such an accomplishment.

That being said, I think we should win 10 games OOC (with one of those being Penn St OR West Virginia) and at least one head scratcher loss. I think we upset someone big in conference once and keep it relatively close against a couple others. We manage to scrape together 4 or 5 other games against the other bottom feeders we play in conference. And we have about 3 games where the wheels absolutely fall off.

So, I'm calling it at 15-17 with a first round bow out of the ACC tourney.

I said about what you said when I first saw the schedule. However, after thinking about it I figured that we're pretty young so some of those 11 that we should win OOC we'll probably drop. I'd go 9 OOC and 4 conference for 13. It's gonna be a rough year, but I'm not too worried about what our record is this year.

Rip his freaking head off!

My initial gut guess is 17-14 and about 50-50 in conference games. That would make me ecstatic.

50-50 in conference games would be the biggest accomplishment for the program in 5 years.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

If we win 9 conference games I think I would cry of happiness.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

No clue about non-conference (although that schedule appears to be soft) but I'm hoping for 6 or 7 ACC wins this year. That would be alright with me.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

A lot of optimism so far, Buzz power!

I mentioned earlier today in another thread - I'm going with 17 wins, so that would give a record of 17-15 through the first round of the ACC. With that being said, for me this season it is about context, not the W-L total. I want Buzz to make us competitive, and to build a strong program. That's my goal for year two as well. I don't think our W-L record will match our strength as a team until Year Three. I'm just happy we've got Buzz.

I'm going 14-17. Buzz admitted this would be a process. It will take a few years to be relevant but he'll right the ship eventually. For this upcoming season I would consider a success anything besides last place. Now, if we had Seth Allen eligible immediately....

16-15 overall 6-12 in ACC play. We possibly have the toughest January schedule in the country but I think we pull an upset or two that shows that we are a program on the rise.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Chris Clarke will announce his choice Thursday at 2:50. Here's hoping he is a Hokie!

Since this is the internet... The Hokies will go undefeated, win the ACC tournament, the NCAA tourney, and be invited to the NBA playoffs. In the playoffs, they'll win every series in four games except in the finals, where they'll drop one game to the Spurs, because, you know, the Spurs are pretty good.

Leonard. Duh.

Tim Duncan will really get after ya...

The OOC schedule is so easy that even if there's a learning curve for the team and some struggles they should win a minimum of 9 of those games, I think they'll get 10 wins. They won't go 2-16 in the ACC again. I think they find their groove in February and win 6 conference games for 16 wins overall. I'm looking at offensive improvement and not having to depend on the PG to score. Devin Wilson is MVP and Shane Henry is the breakout player and makes SC Top 10 twice.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

I'm going to say 17-15. Buzz has taken Marquette squads with not much more talent than ours to higher seeds in the NCAA Tournament, so I'm confident that he will be able get our guys in the right direction.

16-15. One of those wins is at John Paul Jones. LOLUVA will be sitting too high on their horse, nose pointing in the air, not realizing what just hit em. Even if we go 2-29, if we beat UVA twice in basketball, it'd be worth it to me. I'm sick of all these UVA homers talking junk about basketball. Time to give em a big SHMACK TO DA FACE

CEE VT '15 // NYY NYG NYR NYK RUTG

I don't want this year to be about W-L. I want it to be about opponents falling to their knees and thanking God that it's over. I want it to be about our guys playing for something more than themselves. I hope that Buzz's fire spreads throughout Cassell and across Blacksburg and our home crowds hit the Richter scale like they do in the stadium next door. And wins over UNCheat and Dook so we can storm the floors a couple times.
But I think our season's going to be more like
testing

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

This is how I see our season going as it stands now barring major injuries for all teams involved. I do believe that Buzz will force this team to have a winning record and a trip back to the post season.

That's not too bad of a guess. I might throw in at least one early WTF kind of loss with the growing pains we're going to have early on, but with that said, would not be shocked if we knock off someone like Cuse, Duke, UNC, or UofL at least once this year. I know UVa is up there as well, but they're a rivalry game, so you almost expect those to be tossups.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I would say his WTF loss is VMI. They can run and score in bunches, but I think we have enough offense that early in the season that should be a W. 105-92, 95-80, 98-73 are the score of the last three games against VMI. I see that game being pretty much along those lines.

Yeah this was a game where I looked at the schedule and thought this might be a holiday trap game being right before Christmas where there will likely be little if any student support. The last few years (and I know they were without Buzz) we have tended to lose at least one of the Christmas to New Year games that we definitely shouldn't have.) Last year it was UNCG, year before that was Colorado State and Georgia Southern.

Oh man, that WVU/Cuse/FSU/L'Ville/UNC stretch is no fun! Overall I'm with most of you in the 15-17 win range. Just looking for a lot of fundamental growth under Buzz and his system!

looks pretty solid. i'm gonna switch the ND game, the second UVA game, and a first round loss in the ACC tourney.

15-17.

we just don't have a proven scorer or that player who can will us to a victory. i'm hopeful that one or two will emerge and be that player next year but this year, i think we are gonna be competitive but have a tough time winning the close ones.

Shane Henry will likely be your answer to your second paragraph here. He is a monster down low and his energy is contagious.

Rob Peterson
VTCC

that would be awesome if he can step into that role. we need an energy player and someone who doesn't miss layups that we absolutely need. when was the last time we had a box player that actually had a nice set of hands and touch around the rim? i really can't remember. Collins?

Can we at least manage a split with UVA? They are riding a bit too high for my tastes after the #1 seed in the NCAA's last year. It's probably the feeling that they get when we play them in football...except it doesn't last a decade.

The Dude Abides

I think we match up well against UVA. The pack line defense is like the 2-3 in that it eliminates penetration but can be beaten by a good 3-point shooting team. The new guys: Hill, Bibbs, Hudson, Henry along with Adam Smith could make UVA sweat from downtown and open up driving lanes.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

Just missed.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

I'm not sure Jesus could get 18 wins from this team.
what we have: shit ton of guards
what we don't have: experience, leadership, defense, 3pt shooting and size, I.e. rebounding, toughness, rim protection

last place in the acc again. whatever of the awful early season sched + 3 acc games.

12-20, round one acct loss.

This team runs my 2-3 zone, we get 18 wins...EASY. C'mon man, I'm Jesus.

I will disagree with you regarding at least two categories here.

3 pt shooting. I think you will see this as one of the greatest improved areas with the addition of Hudson, Bibbs, and Hill

Rebounding/Toughness: This is where Shane Henry comes in as a JuCo transfer. He is a monster inside on the boards. We also have decent size in terms of blocking and diverting shots with JVZ and the freshman Satchel Pierce.

I'll put no faith in players who haven't performed at this level. I need to see it first.

shane henry is light and probably not his listed 6'8

jvz is serviceable, but most of the acc big men aren't sweating him.

pierce needs to prove it, I fear he's going to be slow.

eric

looks like we split the 3pt shooting / rebounding- toughness

my 12 wins prediction looks unlikely.

a more competitive 10 win team than one would expect, i guess.

Yep, cant play if ands or butts regarding JVZ being gone for the entire ACC slate. That threw a major wrench in how this team rotated down low.

I'm not so sure. Jesus did like to play really good full-court press with a styfling match up zone defense. And his teams always were good from long range. Remember David, he had a good outside shot.

The Dude Abides

Jesus and the Devil in the same conference?

I'd like our chances against Duke for the foreseeable future in that situation.

I guess you are assuming that after our undefeated regular season, the Hokies opt out of the ACC tournament, and then do not get invited to the NCAAs because of the easy OOC schedule?

All the trends appear to be with Hokies but I am very concerned that Connecticut will make a last minute steal. I have read he does have a good relationship with Buzz and staff.

I don't know about you guys, but I am very excited to watch Devin play. I think, with all the experience he got last year and Buzz coming in, he could turn into a great PG.

i think we will see a big improvement in Devin, JVZ as well
