Writers from northeast are understandably trying to play up the recent renewal of the Syracuse-Boston College rivalry, but BC's players say they have a bigger rival in the league.
"Va. Tech," said BC safety Dominique Williams.
"Both teams pride themselves on defense. Coach Beamer has a really, really good defense always. I have great respect for their defensive players, just watching their film against other teams. I'll go on my own and watch their defense, because they get after it. So does BC. We've always had a really tough defense, especially in the past, and we're starting to get back to it."
Added BC O-lineman Andy Gallik: "They're pretty physical. When we know they're coming up, that's always a game that's circled. Especially the O-line guys, we're always excited. We love Va. Tech because they're always late fall, cold games where it's just pounding the rock, stalemating, running each other over. There's a fair share of trash talk because we go way back in terms of tradition. Every time we play Va. Tech there's an extra blood-boiling atmosphere."

Eternal optimist checking in. Today is the day Brewer comes back into shape. Loeffler comes out firing out of the gate and Brewer connects with Bucky Hodges early for a TD. The Hokies never stop from there and Isaiah & Cam have big games. The offense finally figures out how to line up and we play a clean and efficient game with few penalties. By the time the 4th quarter is running out we are all wondering why we were all clamoring for Leal.
Better than being depressed right? Right.

I felt like last drive we were running off of the left side and were successful. This drive has been to the right and got stopped both times for no gain.
Last drive was also more quick hitting rather than east west running
THIS... and I think Wang is a good player at times but he and Conte are either not communicating pre-snap correctly or if he feels more comfortable (in terms of reaction) at guard, but I see too many untouched defenders through the middle. A line is supposed to shore up the most direct path to the QB first. Its like they are taught opposite or something. IDK what is up with that

Are we teaching a different tackling technique this year? I'm seeing a lot of guys wrapping up high and driving the player's head toward the ground, using the offensive player's own momentum to help with the tackle.

Yep, just don't understand the call. Running right behind Conte and McGlock has not been working all game (though not McGlock on that play, obviously). Running behind Gibson and Teller has been much better. Also not sure on personnel. Wright is definitely rusty. That one should have gone to Juice or Rogers.

I would've understood if everyone on offense knew they were going for it ahead of time, and ran another hurry-up play, since they wouldn't have been able to sub in Williams. But with Frank taking time to decide, no excuse to npt put in your best chance to succeed

Well. At least the team looks somewhat competent for the most part this week. Still a lot of dumb, but there are a lot of positives. In comparison to the approximately 0 positives the past 2 weeks I'll take it.
With 8 seconds on the clock and a first down after spiking the ball why not take a shot to the end zone? There's no reason why you can't run one if not two plays to Hodges towards the corner.
That was my only outburst of the game. IMO Our staff is blind to the fact that everytime we have gone conservative it has come back to bite us. If we are going to die, die with no bullets left... but good game so far. enjoy the second half.

I agree, not taking anything away from Brewer. He has made solid decisions for the most part (throwaways, avoiding sacks) but right now my biggest problem with him is there is no big play threat at all from the QB position.

I like the overall effort and energy of offense and defense, but missing the finishing touches. Long run given up could be a killer. I don't see any quit in these guys but it's going to take that same effort and a little more execution in the 2nd half.
I encourage everyone to keep pulling for these Hokies, they're continuing to battle. Hopefully a couple lightning rod plays (big play to Bucky? nice defensive play for a turnover?) can lead to a big half.
I think I realized just how huge that D-lineman was when he tossed Sam Rogers to the ground like a rag-doll on that goal line stand.

I understand the desire to support your team, however the horrendous offenses (PLURAL!!) displayed at Virginia Tech over multiple years is not acceptable. Unfortunately, business don't understand and appreciate good wishes and grand gestures. The only thing a business responds to is money leaking from its' pockets.
I do NOT think Frank needs to be replaced. I do believe that Brewer is our best option for the time being. However, that does not mean they should be free of criticism. I get it, you have some people who are overly negative and have others who feel the need to be overly positive. Neither approach is realistic, helpful, or beneficial.

I am not debating whether Brewer should be our long-term guy. I am definitely not the expert that should make that decision. However, it is obvious that the combination of Brewer and our OC is not working. No one can deny that, based on the actual results.
(Based on the assumption that the OC isn't going anywhere during the middle of this season,) why not play another QB with the ability to run? It may be a possession or two, a half, or even an entire game. Will their overall results be any worse than what we have seen this year? I would think it would give us the ability to keep plays alive and extend drives.
I don't get why Beamer sticks with the current combination. Isn't it his job to find a solution that works (as opposed to continuing to do the same thing without any results)? Isn't that the purpose of "coaching."

Yeah, that was a bizarre call. When I coached I was always partial to the kicker dribbling one directly in front of himself and sending two other guys gunning for it along with him. Sometimes the sketchy people know a lot, it sounds dumb but they know how to mingle with the proper people and hear stuff "we" TKP and HokieNation wouldn't hear.

I don't necenecessarily believe everything this guy is saying.
That said, this is not the first time I heard that Beamer had the players vote if Stanford should return, the players voted no and Beamer reinstated him anyway. Also not the first time I heard that at least one coach didn't go to the locker room at halftime last week. Names were withheld when I heard it, but this one appears true as well. I'm not saying what he is tweeting is gospel fact but there is probably more truth to this than we want to believe.
plenty of blame to go around today, but the most disheartening moment for me was when the D allowed the FG right after we took the lead. All the momentum and the D looked great on the previous drive.
Hope the recruits in attendance see that there is a lack of depth on the DL.

Umm... Brewer went 31/48 for 345yds 2TD (+1 TD dive) and no turnovers. Yeah, ugly game but Brewer kept us in it. He's QB1 until someone unseats him, or he's incapable of taking snaps for VT.
NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE here knows how this season ends.
It's hard to imagine Leal would be any better with that protection. Brewer is pretty good at avoiding the rush at least.
He did have mistakes, but maybe his 2nd best game this season. Not enough to win the game on his own, but with competent special teams (blocked FG, fumbled return) and defense (two TDs over 50 yds), Brewer is a winner in this game.
I was thinking the same. Today, Brewer was a game manager who also made some broken plays work. Coming into this season, that's what we all thought we needed. Just a guy that can deliver enough to move the ball. We had some awful drives but we had some excellent ones, and as you said, would have been enough if not for a couple busts in the other phases of the game.
Rogers was a monster today.
Some absolute key blocks, 70 yds receiving (That was a FB making some of those catches) some rushing and some shoving and good tackling.
I think he got beat once but more than made up for it with some serious ball today and lots of heart.

I couldn't see any of the game as I found no good link from overseas. Somebody tell me Bud wasn't dropping back his defensive linemen as linebackers again, especially on that last 57 yard BC TD run. The QB often smokes us when he does that.
Nope. Guys just couldn't maintain gap fits and tackling was atrocious, especially late in the game.

^^^ this ^^^ On the 2 big TD runs the "free" LB made a horrible read and the RB/QB went untouched in to the end-zone. Unfortunately, you could legitimately argue those two lousy misread plays by 1 player cost us the football game. There is lots of other blame to go around for sure, but those two long TDs runs REALLY stick out and wish we had them back.
That's exactly what happened 3 times to JGW 3 different times for about 180 yards against JMU in 2010. On the other hand, it's why our defenses have the potential to be absolutely incredible. If everyone does their job, it's a phalanx. However, as the good king Leonidas in 300 explained, a single weak spot, and the phalanx shatters. Today we saw what happened with one weak spot. Last Thursday we saw what happens with about 2 or 3 weak spots on any given play.
No, on the last one matouaka was the victim of some very good blocking.

Seriously. We're terrible. Offense looked a lot better today but that's not saying much. Even our defense is pretty average this year.
Hard to have a home field advantage when not a lot of people want to see the product on the field.
We had almost a full house against ECU and GT. We had an insane atmosphere last week against Miami.
We had a great atmosphere against Duke last year and Maryland. It's not that people don't want to see us play, but there is a limit to how much we can lose at home before people just give up. Our team is looking scared playing even at home by the looks of it.
My attitude is the more wins we get, the better with what's left in this season. In my estimation, a huge shakeup on staff and losing out won't do this team any favors, and will actually make it worse. This team, particularly its young starters, need as much practice and experience as they can acquire. A bowl berth is still something I hope this team is striving for.

At the end of everything I just never want Miami to win the Coastal/ACC. Cutcliffe is the only other coach in the Coastal I respect, and was my delusional hope for our offensive coordinator starting in 2006. Our game could go either way, but Duke has to be favored for a return to Charlotte.

CFB is VT football. He built this program but I hope he doesn't burn it down on his way out. I'm not sure what to think at this point. There are clearly major issues with the program. The online is killing us. I'm waiting to see how we recruit. We have playmakers but dont use them ie Bucky. The playcalling today almost looked like 2 different coaches . We could be really good next year but I'm not sure this staff can pull it off.

The last three games, near the end of the game (let's just say 4th quarter), when it looks like we are most likely going to lose, it has forced our offense to "just go for it." During these situations, our offense has been way more productive than (generally speaking) the remainder of the quarters. How incompetent is our offensive coaching? Do they not realize that when we are more aggressive, our offense is more productive? I know the downside of this is there is more likelihood of mistakes (turnovers); however, it passes the "eye-test" as being a more effective strategy than the coaches' game plan.
We can continue beating this dead horse, because then it's more tender and delicious!
I'll say this. I don't think there's a snowball's chance in Barbados of Frank being fired after the season. But knowing Whit's M.O. I could definitely see a come to Jesus moment where there are massive shakeups on the staff after the season that Frank has no say in. I think this is the moment when Whit takes the reins of the program and we see Frank fade toward retirement as more of a figurehead coach. And I don't think Frank realizes it's coming.
well I would prepare for a wake up because its happening. With all the recent news about big $ boosters not happy and our fan base basically blowing up in a bad way Whit won't wait for another mediocre year.

I think the implication was that "coach who shouldn't have been hired in the first place" and "living legend who is the reason we have a football program" isn't exactly an apt comparison.
yeah makes sense, just was trying to show that Whit won't put up with mediocrity and that's exactly what VT football has been for the last 2-3 years.
We hado a program before Frank and we will have a program after he goes. Yes he is a very important part of our success but to say he is the only reason we have a program is an insult to the nearly 100 years of football players we had before he started coaching
Poorly worded (should have been "the reason we have the football program we do"), but the point stands. Beamer is the reason we reached the heights we have. That doesn't absolve him from criticism and the discussions happening now, of course, but I'm trying to point out the fallacy in the Johnson vs. Beamer comparison.

It's good that you called me out on that, and that's the reason I'm not editing the comment. It was worded very wrongly, typed in a hurry while I was also working on something else. When I posted it, I transposed what was in my head for what I actually ended up typing and didn't give it a second thought.
Disagree , Frank Beamer is not the reason we have a football program . We had a football program many years before he became coach , & was respectable , winning 70% of games. We also will have a football program after he leaves. Edit : This comment looks plagiarized , it was not . Just same thoughts & very slow typing.
Thanks. Ya, that's what I was going for. Let me take a second though to point something out I've yet to see anyone bring up. I like what Whit has done so far. I like what I saw Whit do before he got here. I'm excited about the guy, & I'm happy the fan base is. It's a great hire. BUT, He hasn't been around that long, & this is a situation he hasn't been through. There's a lot of folks assuming that he got the Buzz decision right. There are a lot of folks assuming he's handling the current situation correctly, & that he's going to handle it correctly moving forward. For a guy that hasn't been on the job that long, I'm a bit reluctant to just assume.

Not gonna comment on the game because that's depressing enough, but I gotta say this was an all-time low for the ACC Network. Between the zooming in on random faces to the line of scrimmage and first down lines moving on the 4th down catch by Rogers, the camera crew performed like high school interns. Anyone complaining about a crappy feed, yours probably wasn't a whole lot worse than everybody's favorite television network. The only positive was Riley Skinner, who I actually thought did an excellent job today. Besides that, the coverage was freaking awful. I doubt I'm the only who feels this way but I'm not gonna read 600+ comments to find out
I think VT/BC had the "B-team" for the ACC Network. On my satellite in San Diego, we got the MIami/UNC game on the ACC Network. I had to watch the game on watch ESPN.
I agree with you on the poor quality of the broadcast. I literally yelled out, "Sam Rogers broke the first down line!" on that play. I am kind of surprised that that has not been added to his legend. I guess everyone is understandably upset about the loss.
First down line was going for the tackle on that play. I actually laughed my head off when that happened tho, which was the little bit of comic relief I got to experience during the game today. That type of stuff only happens on the ACCN. Also loved the Ronny Van Dyke reference when BC's # 37 made a special teams play
I am still confused by the fact that the ref's negated the late hit on Brewer with an illegal grounding, but completely ignored the fact that it was a free play from an offsides.

Notice what happened to the University of Minnesota player after he delivered that hit on the Michigan QB. People, including the media, were all agreeing that it was a good call and the player should have been ejected. Now go back to the announcers to that Sun Bowl, all they could talk about was that it was a legal hit.
