He did what Beamer called for, just didn't kick the ball to the correct spot. Beamer said after the game that they had practiced that kick, it just didn't get enough height.
You're asking your guy to out run the hands guy to the ball, low percentage of recovery IMO.

I like the chances of our guy going forward more than their guys thinking they are coming to the ball then it going behind them and having to change direction, the kicker just has to get it past them. I've seen teams use this and get the ball, just can't kick it right at the guy.

All onside kicks are low % for recovery, you almost have is to surprise the recovering team with something they aren't expecting and executing it perfectly, anything else is just hoping for a lucky bounce.. I have no problem with the call

Wouldn't be shocked to hear he instructed Hughes to try an angle that last punt in the windy conditions we had leading to it sailing OB after only 20 some yards.

Fantastic!
The scheme is fine. The player just isn't executing. (sarc)
(edit: the gif, not the actual onside kick attempt)
I actually liked the idea, he just left it short. Looked like it was set up well if he hit it right.

So we need more border collies?
Once again Beamer outsmarts himself.

STAHP. I don't like agreeing with you.
Really? Beamer outsmarted himself because of a failed punt?
Or is it something on the onside kick that he outsmarted himself?
I like the onside kick call, higher, and it goes over that guy and behind the BC line, giving us a partially decent chance to recover.
Yeah you're right those were brilliant playcalls that totally put us in position to excel.......
This might be my new favorite GIF
