Why does this statement worry you? Ekanem and the rest of the team should feel frustrated and they should be ready to do whatever it takes to win. It is good to hear that fire is still there.
If you read Jeff Beyer's film review you will realize quickly that the game plan for Boston College was spot on and our team played their asses off. Yes, the team made mistakes at the worst possible times, but remember that with the injuries that we have suffered on defense (3 starters on an already thin team) everyone must play perfectly every down. That is not a reasonable expectation and big plays happened. Add in losing 3 offensive tackles on an already thin offensive line and you can see why Brewer doesn't have time to throw the ball. Oh and we also lost our top 2 running backs so we are relying on a true freshman and converted fullback to carry the load behind a paper thin offensive line. But this team has grit and after getting completely destroyed by Miami they came back and nearly beat a very good Boston College team.
I am relieved to hear that despite all of the adversity and opportunity to make excuses this team continues to fight. You can tell this bowl streak means a lot to this team and I would not be surprised to see this team claw their way to at least two wins and end this season in a bowl again.

I agree with what you are saying, but that's not what I am talking about. My comment is based, on observational experience on what he is saying. In my history of managing staff when I hear "people aren't ready to quit" and "we are ready to be coached up" it usually means that is exactly what people are thinking. (i.e., people are at their breaking point and players feel they aren't getting the coaching they need.)
I'm not a fan of reading too much into things, and this comment could be something that he said in a hurry, but I think Andy is offering it as a temperature check against what we are hearing from Frank. Would be interested in getting Andy's opinion on that.
EDIT: Not trying to stir the pot and hope I am in fact wrong on this. Just offering an opinion

When you're losing... the food tastes bad, the beer is warm, and your girlfriend is ugly.
It's just as simple as that. Once this team breaks through and strings together a win or two, everything will be alright. It starts this weekend. Time for Duke football to remember what being Duke football is SUPPOSED to look like.
