Oh I have noticed our kicker's swag but if your point is that I should be more excited that our kickers are making tackles than our special teams blocking kicks, which is my point, then I say ... uh, no. I'll take blocked punts and field goals over punters making tackles everyday of the week.

Oh, yeah.
Not more exited to see Sly level a returner, perhaps the punter force a fumble but I agree, I'd like to see a few field goal attempts get turned around for 6.
I was pretty happy with the fake punt last game, that was sweet.

The fake punt was awesome... its about time we pulled one off that worked ***HORRIBLESUGARBOWLFLASHBACKFUCKYOUBRADYHOKEDANNYCOALECAUGHTTHATPASSGODDAMMIT***
I just wish we had a Special Teams unit that didn't have to rely on our punter and kicker making awesome tackles this year...

When was the last time this year that Hughes has made a tackle? We've had fantastic coverage on our punts. Slye has 2 tackles on the year and AJ has a total of 0.

I agree, it's not good to have to see a kicker make tackles but, we have an advantage here with that so, I'm not upset to see us use it.
Most teams don't worry about covering the kicker much, he won't get downfield fast after recovering from the action of kicking and they generally are not effective at anything else besides kicking.
Sly was a LB in H.S. IIRC.
If you count the potential blocker and tacklers it's even.
1 receiver means 10 blockers.
1 kicker leaves 10 tacklers.
Except our kicker is an accomplished tackler. So, we have an automatic overload. They have 10 blockers, we have 11 tacklers.
Same goes with punts. Our punter isn't a scrawny kick only type.
It's not that we rely on these guys to tackle, it's that we actively get our foot oriented guy into the tackling plan.
I see this as Frank forward thinking on special teams. Last year we were weak on punt coverage except for being able to generate turnovers, this year our punt coverage is excellent.
I'm going to quote Leonard below me here:
Beamer said at the end of last year that he would fix punt coverage., and... He did.
Moneyball time.

First time I've ever seen a punt blocked by a foot! Somehow I don't think that's how Beamer teaches it...
You're supposed to take the football off of the punters foot, but I guess if you get there before the ball reaches his foot you can just kick it away. Whatever works I guess...

(For those not in the know, my definition of a fumble punt is when a QB fumbles the ball, and then punches it. It's one of my favorite occurances in football.)

I declare this to be the PUNT FUMBLE. A punt that is punted by a defender before the punt ever happens, causing it to be ruled a fumble. This will be a definition to go alongside the fumble punt which is a QB fumbling the ball and then punching it.

Fuller is now covering Boykin! Hokiegasm...
I know! Giggling like a schoolgirl right now. fuller picking up a PI call to stop a long pass to Boykin is a lose-lose for Hokie nation though
Credit to SB Nation
I'm not sure I've ever seen this before. I was baffled by it when it happened, in real time I couldn't tell what happened.
Leg for finding the gif, I am asleep at the wheel this morning.
I think that is the most amazing play I have ever seen in the nfl. A defender kicking the ball before the punter?
I'm pretty sure they tried to say it was a fumble, but clearly he was dropping it to punt...awesome play!!!
Kinda ironic when you consider how large his hands are.
He did the opposite and it worked, as always.
Big hands, big feet..... You know what that means, right??
Yep, he wears big gloves and big shoes. And it looks like he can block punts with both.
They ruled it a forced fumble because the punters foot never touched the ball.
Yeah, that's totally ruining the defensive stats for Hokies in the NFL.
On the upside, I'm glad Boykin is finding ways to make an impact since his role as WR3 has been diminished with Davante Adams's strong play.
Shoulda' been ruled as a defensive punt.
It is amusing from that first angle to still see both teams turn and run after the punt is blocked.
I mean I know that is what they have to do, but it still looks funny.
Congratulations Boykin on your first career TFL (and maybe Sack)!!
This is all I see...
Watched it a few more times. Boykin broke that Bears players ankles with that move.
Yeah, I wonder if he learned that move from Mike Vick.
This is awesome, but I wish the Hokie's special teams were still alive in the Burg
It is, unless you have not noticed our punter and kicker making awesome tackles.

If you want a quick pick-me-up, Check out the college stats page and compare the Hokies punt coverage numbers/ranking from 2013 to this year.

Boykin's been at the heart of a couple of weird plays in the NFL
I hop he got proper credit for 6 on that play since they jobbed him on the blocked punt stat.

Our guy Joey Slye in a Youtube short.
Good use of an old rule.
You can do this under just the right circumstances, and with a kicker like Joey who can hit 70+ yards on free kicks.
Too bad he missed, lol
*edited* commenting he missed, but I also missed the comment above, so it was a double miss.
