What the FAKE?

Now that VT has pulled out the win, despite multiple attempts to let Duke sneak away with a win, can someone explain to me what the hell was Beamer doing with that fake? Middle of the field, up 1, plenty of time left and we run a fake on 4th and 19?

It was the second worst fake punt I've ever seen VT run because it was so inexplicable and had zero chance of success, even with the mythical strength of the 4th down QB.

Is there a member on this board that wants to take a stab at defending the decision?

Miscommunication. DiNardo accidentally said a code word when setting protection that told everyone the fake was on. Being reported by multiple beat writers based on the post-game interview.

"Exit light..."

As far as I'm concerned, Frank Beamer is about the last coach on Earth that will call a fake in that situation. A serious miscommunication there is about the only logical explanation. He can usually be counted on to play everything safe; sometimes we chide him for being too-safe in games.

I guess you could say we had a "Communication Breakdown!"

If Beamer was going to call the fake, he would have called a timeout before. He takes his time deciding to go for it on 4th down these days. Im sure we all remember the Sugar Bowl fake punt incident

I've tried to repress memories of that game, actually, but alas can not.

We all know from the other game that Beamer has learned his lesson. Throw it in there unexpectedly.

So you're saying that.....

What we had here was failure to communicate. Some players you just can't reach. So, we get what we had here last evening. Which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it! I don't like it anymore than you do.

One of my all time favorite movies. I never get tired of watching that car washing scene.

That would be Joy Harmon. I know that fact being a history buff, and all. I recommend any of you younger fellas go ahead and google that car wash scene, you know, to keep a well rounded education. I must confess to having studied it intently myself over the years.
Here is my best effort at keeping Joy in the down-leg free zone:

I'm not sure how I feel about this pic.

A new season...new hope

Beamer looked mad as shit on TV right after it happened. so glad it didn't come back to haunt us

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

The whole "miscommunication" looks to me like a Frank Beamer mistake. Of course Di Nardo cannot go to Frank and say you screwed up coach.

Yes, we've gathered from your posts in the other thread that you're intent on making this 100% Frank's fault. We get it.

According to Bitter, there was miscommunication on the play call. Frank and the coaches were just as confused by the punt fake as we were

It was obvious as it played out that it was a messed up call. Beamer was livid. Di Nardo sat out a couple of plays afterward too.

Well I guess this means frank hasn't lost the locker room if the players are willing to execute something that ludicrous, albeit mistakenly.

Seeing the look on Frank's face and DiNardo put his hand on Frank's shoulder as he was explaining made me cackle hysterically and also know that was not what was supposed to happen.

"Uh, coach, see, uh, what happened was, uh...how you doin today, coach? Need me to grab you a coffee or a hot chocolate?"

This is great.

Also, at least Frank didn't look like he wanted to do Di Nardo bodily harm like Muschamp's famous gif on the sideline.

Ah, Ill Will, you will be missed now that you are stepping down.

And at least Beamer didn't slap DiNardo's helmet like he did to Wilford in that West Virginia game. Man he caught a lot of flack for nothing more than a tap to get his attention!

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Missing in this conversation is that at the right time, that would have been one hell of a 4th and 12 fake punt play. Its a shame it got wasted.

A hell of a 4th and 12 fake punt play is useless on 4th and 19 though.

Yeah, I was looking up TE stats last night and saw Hughe's passing stat and had to laugh.

I will say one thing about it.
It was well executed but short of the 9 yards needed.
He threaded the needle on that and it was a good catch.

It was a nice play that looked a little sloppy but I can imagine the guys thinking, why we doing our 12 yard fake punt with 19 yards to go?
They did it with enthusiasm so, I came away thinking they do have faith in what CFB is thinking.

The upside is that the Dook runback specialist, who has a couple TDs on punt returns this year, did not get a runback opportunity.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Missing is also the fact that Vandyke was open with lots of room to run on the other side, IF Hughes had him all the talking heads would be talking about FB the gambler. Going for the win etc etc.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

To be fair.... #PunterSwag.

As you said though, really glad that didn't come back to haunt us. Beamer's response was hilarious though. "Our reaction was the same as yours: 'what the hell are they doing?'"

Here's how it went down:

(Thursday night:)

Will Johnston: "First team to 6 wins gets..."

Derek Di Nardo: "Deal."

(later that weekend, Duke outcome in jeopardy:)

Derek Di Nardo: "Umm, AJ? We REALLY need to win this..."
