Anthony Boone knows the answer.

It's about time the fourth-down quarterback got to throw a pass.

This throw and catch is good enough to watch twice.

Di Nardo's almost-fat-guy, almost touchdown.

The goalpost can't tackle Bucky either.

its so beautiful

also, the maroon pants/white jerz comb is a great look.

Every second counts

maroon on top of white at home, white on top of maroon on the road, #allmarooneverything on thursday night, orange something (pants?) for orange effect. Who's with me?

Although it was a heartbreaking loss and the other a complete drubbing, I loved the white jerseys with orange pants look we wore during the 2012 Cincinnati and Andrew Luck Stanford/Sugar Bowl games. Also love the orange helmets with the stripe down the middle, but it seems we are sticking with the basic maroon lids. Can't forget the orange jerseys/white pants look we wore against WMU, along with the helmet of course. When we want to, we have the sweetest uniforms in all college football, IMO. And I'm not just saying that, I legitimately mean that. As long as we never pull out that gray crap we wore for the Bama game last year, I'm good.

anything but orange/orange. my eyes bled.

Every second counts

Personally, I liked the gray. IMO the Black was by far the worst.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

I think the grey was a callback to Tech's original school colors and/or the Corps. The black/orange unis we wore against Boise St. were hideous, but would be perfect if we ever play a game on Halloween...

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

I will never be in support of orange pants. Too many bad games I've watched in the mid 00s. Season breaking games. In fact I blame all problems we've ever had on orange pants. Poor recruiting? Gotta stop wearing orange pants. Bad play calls? Coaches distracted. By orange pants. Haven't worn orange pants all season, but still losing? Probably a whole lot of drama going on behind the scenes involving a mix up of surrounding orange pants.

This also works the other way. Even if we have a good season, if another team that wears orange does well and gets a better bowl than us, I blame it on... you guessed it, our orange pants. I know what you're thinking. That doesn't make sense, but bear with me here. What likely happened is that we could have had a better season and beat them out if not for our orange pants. Worse yet, we played a great game in orange pants but the bowl comittee didn't watch that game because "Oh gross, orange pants."

Meh, regardless of the silly superstitious excuses, this was a pretty good look for us in 2011...

No, even with that pic I need to put sunglasses on.
That same jersey in maroon pants would be fine but the day glow orange is not good.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Sorry, I disagree... We are Virginia Tech, not Texas A&M. Orange should be prominently displayed every now and again

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I agree we are not TM and I never said so, but we're not traffic cones and I never said to eliminate it.

We are burnt orange.
In that pic I also see jersey stripes, mouthpieces and we have orange stripes on some of our maroon pants.

VT's official color guide shows maroon the primary color with burnt orange as the accent color. compare our color chart with that orange. It is just wrong in so many ways.

orange

This is going to be great for the ACC.

If the university had a problem with the shade of orange on the uniforms, they would have forced the change a long time ago. The fact that this hasn't happened kinda invalidates the whole "but its not a school color". If the school signs off on it, it is a school color.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I have a problem with That shade of orange on Those pants having us look like a traffic cone.
I back up my feeling of disease with data so I have my feelings AND data.

It's ugly.

And I will bow out of the replies so that we can both agree to disagree and have a good day.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I think the orange color in the above picture has been enhanced in some way. I agree the bright traffic orange looks bad. The orange pants we wore at Marshall a couple years ago seem to be less traffic orange and a little more burnt orange. They are less offensive in my opinion.

orange pants

I prefer the maroon pants with white jersey for away look. But the burnt orange pants with maroon helmets isn't terrible.

VT '10 #AllMaroonEverything

Unfortunately, that was the color that year. Here's a different pic of the same game so, not enhanced.
It was a one off. The next year they added a little more burnt.

David

This is going to be great for the ACC.

That was a cold rainy day at Duke. Made all the bright colors pop a little more.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I'll always prefer maroon with orange as an accent, but I do agree that some of the orange looks we've had the last few years have worked ok. Even the orange jerseys with white pants and helmets were ok by me.

"Exit light..."

I've been waiting all day for these. great job!

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Clarke really messed up on blocking for DiNardo.

He sure did. He should have been shielding instead of trying to catch up.

But then again, he's a LB. He's used to facing blocks, not delivering them.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

He was keeping an eye on the big ugly to his right, and when he saw the TE closing on DiNardo, he tried to get over as fast as he could.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

It looks like DiNardo slowed up at the end as well.

"I thought the kid right there you're talking to right there played his nuts off."

Well yeah, when he shifts the ball to protect against the strip from behind, he slows. It's normal.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

in an interview, DiNardo said he could see the shadow of the Duke guy catching up to him and switched the ball when he knew the Dukie was going to catch up.

Okay, watching the Isaiah Ford catch was pretty cool when it happened live, but watching that replay over and over again has me feeling some type of way. That was incredible. All-American type stuff right there. Haaaaaaaan *French Montana voice*

No wonder I was hungry last night.
Somebody got a picture of me giving away my dinner.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Holy crap our D-Line is fast.

The 4th down Bonner sack where he slaps away the attempted stiff arm is awesome...

On another topic, why wasn't the pick on the goal line a touchback??

When a Team B player intercepts a forward pass, fumble, or backward pass or catches a scrimmage or free kick between his five yard line and the goal line and the runners original momentum carries him into the end zone where the ball is declared dead in his teams possession, the ball belongs to Team B at the spot where the pass or fumble was intercepted or the kick was caught.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

They don't give you credit for sliding into the endzone, I guess.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

*EDIT* VTacaoe beat me to it and has a better response anyway.

The 4th down Bonner sack where he slaps away the attempted stiff arm is awesome...

I think Bonner was taking out some frustration. Boone stiff armed him a couple times earlier in the game. I'm glad he got the last laugh. Also Bud put on his steel balls for the game. The exact same blitz back to back plays to seal the game? #ballsofsteel

I was just about to ask if anyone else thought it was the same blitz. If it was not, then it was only a very small modification. Looks identical on the GIFs.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

It's the exact same pressure package, and LT3 had an awesome tweet about it too.

Can I just say that watching I. Ford, Phillips, and Bucky go up and grab the ball, it makes me wonder what this year would've looked like with LT3 at the helm.

Not trying to start a fight/debate, just was thinking about it,

I've wondered that repeatedly. His strong arm and the threat of the inverted veer would have been ridiculous with guys like Ford, Hodges, Malleck, Philips, McKenzie, Williams and an older, stronger Rogers around him. Oh well... the really disappointing thing is I think peoples' image of LT3 would have been much different if he would've had all that talent around him his final year.

I've often wondered what this year would have been if this was Logan's senior year. With his arm and experience, and his running ability to take pressure off of the backs (maybe less injuries). Kind of like wondering what would have happened if Mike Vick had stayed another year and had Suggs and Jones behind him.

Anyway, thinking like that is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but doesn't get you anywhere.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

True, I just think it shows how small the margin in this game is.

Yup. Shows just how hard it is to get everything to come together just right.

The best part about this blitz is that only 4 guys are actually rushing the passer. We were in the 30 package where we swap a DT for an extra DB:

Clark/Riley/Fuller/Bonner/Jarrett in at DB,
Moto/Clarke/DiNardo at LB
Nicolas/Smith/Marshall at DL

Fuller and Bonner blitz off the edge beside Nicolas who loops inside, drawing the OT with him. Meanwhile Smith drops off in QB spy mode after getting the C & G's attention. The only other rusher is Marshall who goes full DE-beast mode on the other end.

Steve Logan hits on the basic concept here, although the coverage is a bit different since we are running 3-3-5, not 4-3-4, and we drop the 3 LB's into underneath zones and have Clark/Riley/Jarrett all playing a deep, plus Smith playing Spy for a 1-3-3 zone, rather than the 4-2 zone described by Logan.

I LOVED that second Bonner Blitz on the last posession. As you said, the hand-slap helped portray the day as a whole: Aggressiveness, Perseverance, and the ability to Finish (at least a few crucial plays).

> "Ima get you, Boone!" (Begin blitzing at the snap)
> "Get that crap outta here!" (Slapping the stiff-arm away)
> "SIT DOWN!" (Tackle/throw-away)

Get well!

I'm glad we had A.J., I mean A.C., I mean J.C. to carry the load.

Remembering J.C. is like remembering how to say Motuapuaka!

The best thing about the first quarter was listening to that guy trying to pronounce "Matuapuaka."

yes

Love that you picked up the Bruce smith smile, I was grinning as big as he was.

And Bucky vs goal post was great. I think the thing was still shaking during the PAT

Stick it in! Stick it in!

Was it just me, or was that the first time they showed Bruce all game?

Bruce is a boss.

Possibly my favorite part of this is JC's run GIF. Teller gets up to the second level and forcibly moves the LB out of JC's path against his will. Awesome. That's how you play big-boy football.

Any word on the OL grading from yesterday? It seemed like Teller was just dominating at times.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

p.s. Is there an article somewhere on how "OL grading" works?

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

It's arbitrary.

We have learned that over the years. It seemed like the Stinespring/Newsome o-lines never had anyone grade below 80 percent "officially".

Maybe I was drinking too much during our early-game issues, but I just noticed that that Duke fumble on the kick return may have been caused by the other Dukie's helmet. amiright?

Can someone show me where RVD was open? Couldn't see it anywhere!

Right side of the formation, #37 - blocks his man, pushes past, and goes flying down the middle of the field.

"Exit light..."

I don't see it in the replay from the game -- was it a view from the side or a view from behind the QB that made it obvious?

I haven't seen any angle that I would call "obvious." I'm just pulling it from the GIF here; haven't gone back to re-watch anything. But it does seem like RVD has plenty of green in front of him as of the moment he exits stage right in the GIF.

"Exit light..."

I think I remember seeing it on the replay while watching the game. They gave a broader view and it showed him open at the bottom of the screen, with his hand up. However, making that throw would be next to impossible as AJ is left handed, was rolling to his left and would have to throw the ball across his body all the way across the field, which is probably another reason RVD was wide open.

I do remember Mike Vick making a throw like that to Andre Davis though. The throw looked like a wounded duck, and it took forever to get there, but Davis had time to wait on it because the defense had left him as they thought no one could get the ball back there. The ball only went about 10-15 yards down the field to Davis, but it probably travelled 50 yards in the air. But I think it ended up being a big gainer as Davis was so wide open when the ball finally got to him.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Honestly we had so many lineman downfield by the time AJ threw the ball it was kinda ridiculous.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.
