Early Film Review of the Hokies Corner Blitz From Former ECU Coach Steve Logan

Will Stewart (@willstewartTSL ) from Techsideline posted a tweet with this link to former East Carolina head coach Steve Logan breaking down how Bud Foster blitzed Kendall Fuller and Detrick Bonner for the final two sacks of the Duke game without giving up any huge gaps in coverage down field. This is must watch for those of you who are eager to learn how teams design zone-blitz concepts by rolling coverage to the blitz, and then how offenses try to beat that coverage.

What is even more interesting is that Foster used this blitz design earlier in the first quarter, and it appeared that Dadi Nicolas missed his assignment and didn't crash inside. As result, a huge gap opened up on the interior of the defense and the Duke tailback ran the dive play for a long gain. We will cover that play in our detailed film review.

Just watched it from a link in a tweet. Logan's almost as good as French at explaining plays.

Great thing about that defensive play is the ability to adjust if the Offense recognizes the blitz.

Logan's ("Bang It") solution, calls for QB to recognize the safeties shifting over and notify the offensive line to ignore the Mike LB (who's covering the flat) and pick up the nickel (who's blitzing).

All Bud has to do, if the QB/offense is even capable to predict the play, send the Mike on the blitz and keep the nickel in the flat. The line shifts over and the Mike should be free up the middle.

I thought the same thing. It sets up plenty of counters to it to exploit the O-line adjusting to this play.

Does anybody remember TSL's love affair with Steve Logan a few years back? He wrote an article about our offensive struggles vs BC in 06 (I think) and they feel head over heels with the guy. They did Chuck Norris style threads about him and everything.

Still a good job. Of course, it lacks some context.... :)

Please tell me the film review is a video of French drawing up plays on a chalk board

During the kickoff happy hour in Arlington, I spent over two hours drawing up offensive and defensive schemes on a white board.

As for doing actual video analysis on video, I'd defer to Joe on the Tech, but I am not exactly Suzy Kolber when it comes to being eye candy for the break downs.

Dear God, did she just say "blitz package again?" I think I just swooned.

Nevertheless, I would still try and pull off the Joe Namath, "I want to kiss you"

The only similarities between Logan's description of the play and what happened on the field was that in both cases two guys blitzed off the same edge and a DL dropped into coverage. Other than that there's nothing but differences.

We were in our 30 look, with 3 DL, 3 LB, 5 DB, not a regular 4-3 or Nickel (4-2-5)
We rushed 4, not 5, our DB's didn't rotate, and our DL didn't drop into the flat.... we were playing a straight up 3-deep zone with Clark, Jarrett and Riley behind DiNardo, Motuapuaka and Clarke playing matchup short zones, with Woody Baron playing spy at the LOS.

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

I remember how they decided Logan was evil incarnate because he said something about Frank Beamer that was less than complimentary. It wasn't insulting, but more along the lines of - 'I wouldn't want to be the Offensive Coordinator up there'. As soon as they got hold of that, they hated him totally.

But where's the half speed replays??? Amateurs!!

Has anyone ever seen Steve Logan and french in the same place at the same time?

Makes you wonder a bit, doesn't it

Steve Logan is the man! I love listening to him on the radio. Such a great football mind who doesn't sugarcoat anything.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

" Steve Logan is the man" Maybe , but Bud Foster is the tits. I always am amazed at his game adjustments & wonder what he could accomplish with a top 5 recruiting class.

^^^You mean Steve French?

(BE WARNED: Do not just google 'Steve French'. Apparently that's also a male pornstar.
