OSU has punted 26 times in 10 games and 6 of those were in the VT game.
Ignoring what has happened since then, how will that win be talked about 5 years from now?

I think it is one of the defining wins of the Beamer era and will be looked back upon as such. Especially since OSU will only climb under Meyer.
Fondly.
I was there.
It was glorious. It needs no historical context or become the what-if narrative for things that happened after that win. We went into the shoe, we fought them toe-to-toe, never trailed, always rallied, left our DBs on an island all night, came after Barrett all night, capped the win off with a fabulous pick 6. Thats all that need be remembered.
I concur..... I was also there. I think it was THE defining, signature win that our team finally achieved. It was two hard-hittin' physical teams battling it out and we never gave up... Our team made the plays that we needed to make all game long and played with full-out intensity. We beat a great team in their house in front of 107,000+ people. Our team is extremely young, and all the stars aligned in that game. They will bring that experience into next year and build upon it....because they LIVED it!
I have to smile, though, looking back. Our group of VT fans was escorted by friends that were Ohio State graduates and die-hard fans. I have to say that our pre-game, tailgating, etc. experience was awesome, and 99% of OSU fans were extremely gracious and good to us...but not a single one thought that the Hokies had ANY chance to win :) That was a pretty universal take from our group. They were shocked at the end of the game. What a fantastic experience!
Totally agree. Very nice fans, but not a single one thought they would lose or even get challenged. They did politely tip their caps in the end, but I think it must really stick with them that the lose to VT will keep them out of the playoff.
Yep! Another funny moment was when my friend Steve, his son and I were following the funnel of anxious, anticipating fans into the 'Shoe to present our tickets and get seated... bunches of Hokies (there were ALOT of Hokes present!) were yelling "let's go Hokies!", etc....some Buckeye in the line next to me yelled "You guys aren't even ranked!!"...to which I loudly replied..."we will be next week!"....that quieted him up...we all laughed....the next week we WERE ranked....a shame that we couldn't keep that ranking into the following week, but that's another story..:) Great, great day that was!
Another BiG win for Beamer and VT. It will be a reminder as to what could happen/will happen more often once the program gets a couple solid recruiting years in!
Similar (but not as highly) as the 2003 win over Miami - Big win in a mediocre/average season.
IMO: OSU '14 > Miami '03
That was a Coker-coached Miami team that faded down the stretch and was beginning its descent into a decade+ of mediocrity.
I see this OSU team winning out, making the 4-team playoff and possibly doing some damage there.
That 03 Miami team had something like a 23 game winning streak going (approximate guess); we had just lost a hard game in the shithole known as Morgantown.
Nothing will beat that 03 win. The fact that it was at home, at night, and VT owned the night and the fans were loving every second.
It was one of those games where you "had to be there" to understand the feeling. Watching it on TV did not give it justice.
I think from a fan perspective Miami might be a more thrilling and satisfying win. But for a program perception, having a top 10 OOC win on the road (something we've struggled with) at a historically dangerous stadium vs a blue blood program, I think it may have done more for us
That was the most electric, best atmosphere of any event I have ever been to and it is not even close.
I went to the Ohio State game as well and that was very cool, but the atmosphere really didn't touch Lane Stadium when it's rocking.
Because it wasn't Lane Stadium - wait until next September..... OMG!!!
Is there any chance of tOSU being able to play for the NC? Just curious.
Yes there is. If the Pac12 continues to beat each other tOSU would really only need to win out. Then the top 4 would likely be FSU, Baylor/TCU-whoever wins out, SEC Champ, and tOSU as B1G Champ.
Much like the rest of sports, it'll be remembered in how we do after it.
If we improve in future years, we'll look back on it thinking it was a building block for the future and how it might have taken a while, but we eventually used that as a springboard for success.
If we continue the downward spiral, it very well could end up being seen as the last swan song on the major stage of Frank Beamer.
A spark before the fire that I truly believe 2015 will prove to be.
But, forget historical context.
For me, it was the impromptu picture my son and I took with the only other group of Hokies in our section as time was expiring, and then after that a walk half-way across the stadium to be a part of a raucous march down the open stairs at Ohio Stadium chanting "Let's Go Hokies" with a few hundred other Hokie faithful.
A damn glorious night. That is how it will be remembered.
One of the most awesome moments of Hokie Football ever....
...until we beat them in Lane Stadium. Then we will have set a new standard of awesome.
As the first of two loses by OSU to VT.
Thread winner.
Hopefully a win that showed a glimpse of the talent that exploded onto the scene in 2015
Also yelling "TOTS IS CLOSED!!!" for no particular reason as we exited the stadium and bar
A great night and one of the few highlights of the season. It will keep an otherwise very good team (tOSU) from making the Playoff
I think there is going to be several ways that game is viewed as we move forward.
I think a lot of people out there (non-VT fans especially) will view it as a "fluke" win in what ended up being a BAD season for VT. They all heard Beamer talking about how that win was meaningless unless they built on it moving forward. And they most certainly did not build on it.
For me, I will remember it as an amazing win against a team that I just can not stand and have not for a long time. To go in an shut the Shoe down will be an all timer in my memory banks that can never be taken away.
Also, and I pray this ends up being true, it could be the thorn in the side that sinks Ohio States chances to play in the inaugural playoff. As my Buckeye friend would text me after every subsequent VT loss "You are ruining our season again!"
Couldn't happen to and for a better fanbase. And when the distaste of this season washes out over the offseason, it will serve as a meaty piece of hype for Labor Day weekend. And we will all get to see the highlights of this game over again. And I will say this, Barrett looks like an absolute monster in basically every game since we handled him.
Over on eleven warriors forums, they are calling that loss a fluke loss similar to their loss to Illinois. We just need to destroy them in Lane next year.
Nebraska fans were claiming the same, when VT beat them in their house. Made the late dagger to the heart, for the W, the next year in Lane, that much more enjoyable.
I too have had an OSU friend text me after every loss with "You're ruining our season". I get tired of hearing that crap. I tell him OSU should have taken care of their business and they wouldn't have to worry about it. I want to kick their ass even more in 2015.
Mission Accomplished
Bud has taught him well... aaahhhh Grasshopper....
Being a history buff, I gotta swoop right in here with the REAL "grasshopper" guy.

: )
Since it was one of those wins where I said "Finally!!!!!" I will remember it for a long time. Heck, tOSU could get into the playoff picture and who knows? Could we be the team that beat the NC team? Ok, maybe too much, but it's possible.
I hadn't even considered that. Pretty cool.
Most will probably see the OSU win as the coming together of the best our team had to offer, realizing through the lens of history that 2014 is an imperfect year for Hokie football, mired in inconsistency (players and coaches alike) and some bad luck. It was the apex of the season and the realization of who this team could be but perhaps not who they are.
For me, I will never forget the high I felt when Riley returned that pick and the the clock wound down. I will tell you that I was literally on the edge of my seat up until that point, and I fell to my knees with happiness when it was over. For me, it was comparable to Miami '03 and WVU '04 (the only time I have rushed the field at Lane). Pure joy. That can never be taken from me, no matter the struggles we've had since or the ones we may face. My team beat one hell of a good opponent on their own turf, and I reveled in it. I saw pride in the faces of our Hokies on that field and in the stands. The boys came together as brothers that night, for sure. Dadi was right - it was family. They've struggled, and they've been tested, but there is no denying that everything was right in Hokie Nation that night, on the field and off of it.
This, this, a million times this. I did the exact same thing. I had to work the next morning and turned it off as soon as Frank and Urban shook hands. My wife rolled over when I came in the room half asleep and muttered, "did they blow it?" She said I had this crazy look in my eyes and was like, "Baby they won. THEY WON." I was so amped I dont how much sleep I got that night but it doesnt matter. I'd trade that feeling for a good night's sleep any time.
Just like all other wins. VT went on the and beat the #8 Buckeyes at home and was a big win for the program. People don't really pay attention to what happens after in the season very much because a few years from now they're just going to look at the box score.
Considering how the rest of the season has played out so far, I'd say one hell of a win!
A lot of people will probably remember this:
If OSU wins it all, possible, not likely, but possible, it will be another team we played that went on to win the national championship. Again, total SWAG, but I believe in all the other examples, we lost and in this scenario, we won. That in my opinion makes it potentially very special. Only time will tell........
Shoot I typed this in and then saw the above post where someone beat me to this thought. sorry gang.
depends on what happens in the next 4 years... if we go on to great things, that may be seen as a game that showed we could.. if we continue with 7 and 8 win seasons it will be seen as an aberration I would imagine
I think the outsider perspective will greatly depend on how we play against them in Lane. If we play close or even win again, vt looks better and Ohio state looks even worse. Also, outsiders are already dismissing the loss because of Barrett being a new starter. That would change if we punch them in the mouth again.
They had a new starter, we had a new team.
It was a really great win, maybe my favorite since the 07 ACC Title Game. Not quite enough to top 03 Miami, but that was a formative game for me. I will have fond memories of it for a long time, no one can take away the game we played that night. Just really fine football.
With one of the more memorable wins in VT history and those embarrassing "Mission Accomplished" t-shirts
I had a feeling from the beginning that we were in for a rough ride this year, so I always conjured up an image of another Frank, along with the musical verse, "You can't take that away from me"...

From here on out...mention tOSU...I go here...
Next year, somewhere around the second week of September, I plan to add Dean to the mental image...
That was the best Virginia Tech game and overall experience I've ever had outside of Lane Stadium. I was only 11, almost 12, when we beat the Hurricanes in 2003, but I remember that Lane was absolutely electric. Well, Ohio Stadium was amped for that game, the first home night game for the Buckeyes in a new era of their stadium, and our team went in there and outplayed them over the course of 60 minutes. I sat by myself in a row of Buckeyes, though near some Hokies. When we won and I headed down to the corner of the field where our guys and when I finally circled back and met up with my friends that I had travelled with, I didn't know what to do with myself nor what to say. As many have already said, pure joy.
yeah ... I really envy you guys that have been there for Frank's ride.
back when I used to walk uphill, both ways, to brand-new McBride , there were no Thursday nights, there were no electric games at Lane, there were no nationally relevant events associated with VT football. Ever. I went to school at VT when the only thing entertaining about football was how much bourbon you could sneak in.
thankfully, it got a lot better when I had to start paying for tickets and driving back to campus for the games!
As one of the greatest spectacle in all of sports that I have ever whitnessed live. I had a blast cheering my ass off as 107,000 people in scarlett and grey sat on their hands gaining respect for a program they though did not belong on the same field as them.
I will remember it as one of the greatest Tech games I've ever been to (Im 24 years old). AND hopefully remember it as us being the ones ruining OSU's shot at a playoff spot. Below is a repost of a pic that I took at the game, stadium was awesome.
I'll remember it as the day my buckeye classmates started to not enjoy my attire
