QB Controversy at OSU next year?

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/2481930...

It's still November 2014, but there's already a clear winner for the honor of 2015's most intriguing quarterback situation. Take a bow, Ohio State, where current Heisman Trophy candidate J.T. Barrett has been exceptional -- as in, school-record exceptional -- in replacing former Heisman Trophy candidate Braxton Miller.
Urban Meyer said in September that Miller would have the starting job waiting for him when he returns from shoulder surgery for a fifth-year senior season in 2015. But his public stance seems to have softened on that in recent weeks, leading to speculation -- though nothing beyond that -- that Miller might consider a transfer. Miller is expected to graduate from Ohio State, making him immediately eligible in 2015 should he transfer out of the program.

But NFL.com reported Tuesday that Miller is not exploring a transfer and "plans to stay -- for now."

"Two sources close to Miller," reporter Chase Goodbread writes, "say the quarterback's plan for now is to remain at Ohio State and lead the Buckeyes in 2015, according to NFL Media's Albert Breer."

Miller could also enter the 2015 NFL Draft, though he said when his season-ending shoulder injury was confirmed that he would return to school.

Of course, anonymous sources that can't even assure the Buckeye faithful that Miller won't feel differently next week won't stop the rumor mill or idle chatter about how Miller would look in, say, Oregon green. But the news could always be worse, of course -- Miller could already be planning his post-Columbus career, and as of now, there's still no indications he is.

Side note one of the "talking heads" even suggested VT could take a look at Miller if he were to leave.

Yes, please!

Yes Miller would be a great backup to Brewer.

Brewer was our stop-gap. If Loeffler decided to go after Miller, as good as Miller is, I'd have to start to wonder about Loeffler's status as a QB guru. I can't help but think pursuing him would make things really uncomfortable in the QB meeting room.

Good news is this will never happen in a million years so you don't have to worry about doubting loeffler for that reason. (There are still plenty of reasons to doubt him)

Oh boy would this be hilarious, but I would find it nearly impossible to happen. Ohio State would put a stop to that immediately. Sure, let your former Heisman candidate QB go to your opponent for your first game of the season.

He is slated to graduate, so he would leave as a graduate don't think he can be restricted.

I thought Brewer graduated and still wasn't allowed to play at a Texas school?

That would be an interesting situation. If Miller has graduated from OSU, does Meyer or the school have any ability to restrict his transfer? He'd be pursuing a graduate degree - isn't he free to choose a school to do so?

"Exit light..."

He should be able to, can start next year a la Russell Wilson and I sont think there can be retrictions on where he can go.

Pretty sure player has to go to a place that has a grad program not offered by the current school

This is correct, at least as the rule was written when Russell Wilson transferred. I doubt it would have changed, but then of course there is always #goncaa.

"Exit light..."

^This. There are restrictions. It's still considered a transfer and I do believe they can still place restrictions on them. But don't take my word for it as I'm not 100%

Not from what I've been able to find, but like all things NCAA, nothing is spelled out clearly.

Well, there's this, but again it's a few years old:

The graduate transfer rule has changed a bit since first enacted six years ago, and it applies only in a specific case. A player must have completed his undergraduate degree and then pursue a master's degree that his current school doesn't offer.

"Exit light..."

While this is not exactly from the NCAA rulebook, this was what I found http://www.athleticscholarships.net/ncaa-transfer-exceptions.htm. There are 3 rules there to look at, the One-Time Transfer Exception, the Graduate Exception, and the Graduate Transfer Waiver. I don't know which would apply here, but that's what I found.

The NCAA wants to see that the student-athlete transferred in order to continue his or her academic career by pursuing a graduate degree not offered at the previous school.

I think they're just as restricted as undergrads, as far as transfers go. Didn't Brewer come in on a similar program? I thought he had wanted to go to a Big12 school (one of the Texases, specifically), but the TT coaching staff wouldn't let him. So, I think anOSU coaching staff could similarly restrict him from going to wherever they don't want him to go.

Transfer within conference can be subject to confernce rules.

Yes, they have the ability to restrict his transfer. Brewer's transfer was restricted to any B12 school or school in Texas. It's not unusual for schools to restrict a player from any school on their schedule during that players eligibility.

I know I probably have a better shot at suiting up for the Hokies than Miller, but if somehow he came to VT and faced his old team I don't think I'd be able to stop laughing from the time of the announcement till the end of next season.

The real question is...does he have TE skills?????

So back to the real issue, if you are Urban who starts next year assuming no injuries and both QB's play like they did in previous games. Do you really sit the guy who is setting records at OSU and is the future or player who hasn't played in over half a year and would only be around for one year.

Thank you for getting back to the real topic.

I don't care that one guy said Braxton COULD transfer and he COULD transfer to VT, if he wanted to. He's probably going to be the QB for OSU in Lane next season. That concerns me.

Miller had an entire off-season to recover from his injury and the very first time he went live, he reinjured it. There is absolutely NO guarantee whatsoever that he will be able to play QB again.

this is certainly a possibility and i brought it up a couple of months ago. people automatically assumed at the time that miller would be guaranteed the starting QB role based on Meyer's statement. Meyer had to say what he said. It was a win/win. Get the best out of barrett via competition without a competition and keep Miller on the hook.

if miller stays at OSU and can keep himself healthy, there will be a huge QB battle that will be closer than people think. barrett is very good and is getting better each week. miller will be rusty and probably a little gunshy at first. it'll be interesting to watch. personally, i'd rather have miller lining up against us next year. he hasn't experienced what barrett did.

I think it may hinge on the surrounding cast next year. Is OSU graduating a lot of offensive talent? If so, Miller, if healthy, can probably do more with less. The only way I see Miller getting back on the field is if he can somehow show better production than Barrett, and that only happens if Meyer is willing to play both QB's early in the season. It will definitely be interesting to watch. If he decides to transfer, nearly a 0% chance he comes to VT.

0% chance. It would only hurt his draft stock. Why would he do that?

I think there's a good chance we see both on the field. Miller almost certainly has little future as a pro at QB, so wouldn't a shift to TB next year make sense for both him and OSU?

you guys really think Urban would let him transfer to VT when we play them this upcoming year??

Normally coaches won't let kids transfer to a in conference team or a team they play in the next 1-2 years..trust me I know...it happened to me

First I have no idea why Meyer would even automatically declare Miller the starter next year when 1. you don't know how healthy he is going to be at that time and 2. you don't know the possible production of the current QB (which has turned out to be pretty good).

Why would you sit a QB who was doing awesome the year prio and is the future QB of the team so your old injured QB with one year left of eligibility can come back and play.....and hopefully not re-injure himself. It doesn't make any sense. I'm sure barrett will start next year. They would be retarded not to play him.

Because talk is cheap, and it's easy to make a promise to keep a star player around and happy in the event that Barret doesn't work out and this year is a rough one. I really doubt Miller ever starts for OSU again - the promise was just to keep his options available.

It was a catch

I understand that. But to say "The starting job is yours next year if you want it" is a obviously disingenuous. I mean to say "You'll be able to compete for the starting job and if you win it you win" is something that says you have just as much chance as Barrett does ot get the starting job, however I'm not promising anything. Poor choice of words IMO. It's like when their old coach told their last QB that if he comes back the following year he'll let him play in the bowl game instead of suspending him. What??? Totally trying to force this kid ot make a decision on a "promise" for your (the coaches) betterment. Garbage.

So if you are the coach do you try and push Braxton into the draft or to transfer?

with his injury history I would say draft.. maybe he would get to go to a team that doesn't need him ASAP and he could take a year to heal/learn up!

I think as a coach, you are more concerned with depth on your roster than the future earnings of your players. You convince them both to stay by playing up the "Open-competition" angle, then hope both are on the squad after Spring ball. You never want to lose a talented QB for whatever reason, especially since the new backup will have exactly zero college experience.

The Dude Abides

Regardless, if OSU is left out of the playoff this year (because of our game) we need to expect a really pissed off Urban Meyer team sprinting towards Blacksburg next year. That game is already circled on all of their calendars in Columbus, as they are reminded each Tuesday evening about our win.

That's the reason that we saw a fired up Husker team, in Lane. No Nebraska fan thought VT had a shot at the W, in Lincoln. Something tells me that Big Lou's "We're going into Columbus and getting the win" quote will play prominently (it's one thing to be contrite and steal a W. It's another for a leader on the team to call the shot, then get it).

30 years after starting grad school at Virginia Tech, I finally defended my dissertation and earned my PhD.
Don't give up on your dreams.

No better Urban Meyer, than a pissed off urban Meyer.

Bring it.

Honestly though, If OSU keeps trucking, and the SEC keeps eating each other alive, Urban's gang is going to get a playoff look. Don't count them out. The Hokies winning out would help.

Leonard. Duh.

They'll have a lot more film on VT next year. I don't think they had a clue what Brewer, Malleck, Hodges, et al could and couldn't do offensively.

And I think a big part of the problem for OSU was that they actually had film on the D, but they got outBudded. I also think they got suckered by film on Facyson. If they had known he wasn't remotely close to 100%, they likely would have done some things very differently. [And ECU almost certainly picked up on that pretty quickly in their review of the OSU game film]

outBudded

no worries, he'll just break out another defensive front meyer hasn't seen in 20 years for next years game.

Extrapolation of events that could transpire:

1. Braxton Miller transfers to VT
2. MV7's like nobody's business and beats anOSU
3. Tears VT single season record on way to Heisman and National Championship.
4. Resultant victory celebration in Blacksburg inadvertently triggers Yellowstone super-caldera
5. Miller leaves Earth with Anne Hathaway to save humanity
6. Uses NC ring to generate negative energy; resulting in de Sitter space wormhole.
7. Travels through wormhole to establish colony of remaining humans.
8. Future exoplanet humans revere Miller and Virginia Tech as gods.
9. All of humanity becomes Hokies, and is now Hokie-manity.
10. Hokie Nation becomes Hokie Planet.

i think this man is on to something.

Every second counts

I like it except for the part where we all die.

I don't really care about OSU and am rather sick of hearing their fans whole "us against the world" mentality this year, but this topic almost infuriates me. It would make absolutely no sense to sit Barrett, who has looked like one of the best, if not the best QB in the land since the VT game. Dude screams NFL to me. Braxton would be best suited at jumpstarting to his future position (RB or WR) as soon as possible. The whole "you can't lose your job to injury" thing also bites at me. If Barrett gets benched for the whole year, I hope he's the one talking about transferring to Blacksburg, not Braxton.

Could there be a QB controversy in Blacksburg next year? Don't get me wrong, I love brewer, but Motley has more physical upside. His mental game remains to be seen, but he certainly looks the part of a good QB

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

His throwing game also remains to be seen. I'm not opposed to it though; Lefty should be a good judge of it.

"Eat, Drink and Be Merry, for Tomorrow We Die!" "Geaux Hokies is pronounced GUUH-X" - Andrew Jackson, 1815

Hard to say.. I mean we haven't even seen Motley throw a pass in a game, let's not get carried away just yet... That being said, it's quite possible he would have won the job this year if not for injury

Hey, we could always go Larry Fedora style and run a two QB set all year long. That's always kept them relevant at the national stage

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

yes, because from what ive heard, Andrew Ford has a brilliant football mind (sources right?) hence him being the guy who relays signs onto the field. Not that is uncommon from backups...but I also think he can make throws Brewer struggles to make. Spring practice should be veryyyyy interesting next year to say he least, especially if Chad Morris ends up here. Brewer, Motley, Ford, Durkin, Morris should have fun battling it out.
