Any TKPers making the trip to Winston-Salem? I'm new to the state of NC so I made my first ever VT road game trip last week to Duke. Hoping to keep my record perfect for seeing the Hokies outside Lane!
North Carolina is easily my 1 seed for a state that I ultimately want to settle down in. Winston is an alright place. Grew up just an hour north of there. Have fun, dude!

I don't think I've ever admitted this before on TKP.....I though the uni's vs Duke last year were badass. I don't care about the "we look like clemson" argument. EFF that, CLemson looks like US. They're gonna need a few more ACC titles under their belt to trump our accomplishments since joining the league.

The reason attendance is often a very important factor in a coach's tenure, but is often unrecognized on message boards. Our recent game in lane where we had such bad attendance? We lost essentially half a million dollars in gate receipts from unsold tickets. Not unused tickets, unsold tickets.
Compare that with London's crew averaging 40K in a 60+K stadium. They're experiencing an opportunity cost of about a million dollars per home game. That stuff adds up quickly, when you realize how many non-revenue sports could be covered by the lost ticket sales from one home game.

Really, what's not to like about a handoff to a guy 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage moving laterally? I can see no downside to that. Certainly wouldn't want to increase the chances of a fumble by having people moving too quickly.

This is what I was expecting. You know why? Because we are a bad team. Yeah the Oline sucks, but that isn't all that is bad. Plenty of time we have time, but none of our guys can get open. Maybe it is the playcalling, maybe it is the receivers not getting space. I don't know the diagnosis, but the symptoms are obvious.

I'd say Brewer has been okay. Missed a few easier throws that we really needed (we need all of them).
I haven't seen anything here to suggest that anyone is "accepting" any of this. It's an awful game all around on offense, with the exception of Isaiah Ford. RBs whiffing on blocks, O-line getting beat, mistakes by Brewer, and our only viable backup QB loses the ball after a decent gain. This isn't on one guy.
If this was the English Premier League, I would be so pumped after that awesome half of 0-0 "football."

I asked a serious question. Who would you run it with? I don't think a balanced attack is wrong, since our pass plays have been working better than our run plays.
I'd go with Jerome. Not sure if we're capable of imposing our will on WF's defense on the ground but I'd like to see us attack the middle a little bit more - even if just to mix it up.

Our offense is moving like a car cobbled together with junk yard parts that are close but not the right fit. With Ford and Phillips blanketed by the best part of their defense and VT unable to execute a scheme against the rest of the defense, we are in trouble. The offense must be expecting a shutout from the defense.
Go to a football game and a soccer game shows up. Just flat out ugly and embarrassing!!

Everyone needs to calm down, this must be exactly what our OC is trying to do.
Brain Games: If you blur your eyes and hold the computer upside down, Wake Forest's record is actually 8-2, 6-0 in the ACC. I knew I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
So I think we need to bring in Motley. Yes, he fumbled. No, everything isn't Brewer's fault. But I don't see any reason to believe we are going to win this game passing the ball, and our single goal is getting bowl eligible.

I work for an online/direct mktg educational company so I'll use my experience there as an example of what I mean.
Let's say we have a daily revenue target of....20 bucks. The website goes down for two hours in the middle of the day but we still make the 20 bucks. The CEO of our company is not going to be pumping his fist and cheering. He's going to wonder why in the "F" the website went down - you bet someone is answering questions. Perhaps the middle management is celebrating the win with "the people", but the big guys need to be focused on understanding why the revenue target was compromised in the first place.
Can anyone name a great coach that you think would be screaming and pumping his fist because of a missed field goal (the second attempt after a bonehead penalty by his own squad) when his heavily favored team is in the situation we're in now? (that's a long question) Sigh of relief, sure. A light clap, maybe. But not cheering. There is no cheering for the boss-man in that situation.

The man can't recruit. He can't win big games (OSU was a fluke). Underachievement is his hallmark. And he has failed miserably with talented teams, in a weak conference/division, for three years in a row. NO REASON he should be here.
What magic coach is going to walk into Southwest VA and recruit top 15 every year, I'll give you a hint, NO ONE. We don't have he name brand of Bama, Texas, OSU we don't have the money of them or play in the SEC and we most certainly do not have that warm weather football or major metro area draw. Not a defense of play allying or depth chart, but to expect someone to come into to Tech and start bringing in all this top talent is a pipe dream.
Maybe not. But the point is, he is not excelling in that area. And, outside of recruiting, his teams are failing miserably on the field, and this program is rapidly going down the shitter under his leadership.
Saying "nobody else is going to recruit better than him" when he's not even recruiting well should not be an excuse to keep him around.
I'm not advocating keeping him beyond this year. But we have to have realistic goals in the next 2-4 years.
I'm guessing you have never been to Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Mississippi, or many other locations. Stop making all these excuses. Blacksburg is close to roanoke which has just as much to do as many other places in CF's university towns and campuses. for a few months out of the year to be there isn;t that bad. but, like other things in life, depends on how well you can sell it. I'm tired of our inferiority complex around us. In life you can always be better and you can always be worse. its which you choose or believe that somehow happens. I don't want Frank gone but I want the pieces around him to help him get one. I don't want him fired out of loyalty and the fact that i can't see him being forced out until every effort to get to that caliber of championhip support is given to let him go out with one. If it can't be done then, I know he is not able anymore.

I will never allow myself to believe the reason I don't I want him out is because I fear we can't do better. Better yet that no one will ever be able to do the same or better.... That no one wants to play in little ol' blacksburg. Why even play the game? Just let Bama, Texas, OSU battle it out then. (we have beaten all of those teams btw) Without Bama would you ever go to Tuscaloosa. This is very true. I have been to auburn, driving in was miles of trailer parks and open fields, then you hit the little town. Nothing special about it. At least tech has some nature and outdoor life to compliment it.
We are not talking about someplace we as adults want to love and raise a family or enjoy our time off. I want a coach who can recruit well, win games AND bring in/up stellar young men. I dont get mad when Tech does not have a top 15 recruiting class because I know that will not happen on a consitent bases. Tech doesn't have a weathly benefactor to build cathedrals nor does it have years upon years of history to rely on.
For perspective, we held a team to zero points throughout 4 quarters and still lost.

I hope that was sarcastica because losing to Wake already warrants disapointment... Being shutout Offensively to them. There is not a teams fan base in the nation that would call what this staff gets over reaction. I am among the most optimistic, glass-half-full, fans hokie nation has. I hate all the fire this coach that coach but Leoffler at this point is a high- school coach and if something doesn't NOW. we will forever be in the basement of what ever league we are in. We just lost any chance of legitamacy in the eyes of recruits these next two or three classes. Its time to rite the ship beyond that. This isn't a loyalty issue anymore its a matter of being selfless and making a difficult decision for the greater good of a multitude of good people. That is all.

Can't blame it o lack of RB's either. JC had a decent game. Brewer played like absolute shit. His pick in the 4th was awful. He had 10 to 15 yards of running room but he throws it right to their LB. We drive it inside the 20 with Motley so we do whats natural, pull him. We throw that receiver screen to Bucky that's been so effective all season long and turn it over bc it didn't go forward. The scoring streak ends next week when we play a much more talented UVa D. Sad to see this happen.
Who is going to the game next weekend to watch UVA put the final nail in the coffin and watch as they celebrate on our field while they know all the big recruits are tossing their VT letters in the trash?

I stayed up to watch JMU beat us from across the world, I snuck to the watch officers to get updates on the 2007 LSU game. I or they can get a bowl game 'cause lord knows we need the practice. I'm no longer a Brewer supporter. He makes some plays, but not enough to warrant a staying position in a power 5 conference. CFB doesn't have it any more. I hope it doesn't, but this loss SHOULD cost us all of the big recruits left on the board. This offense has become a laughing stock, and caused us to arguably be the worst team in the worst division in potentially the worst power 5 conference. Ever the optimist, I hope next year is better, and I'm sure I'll be dotted into being excited in the off season again. However, I'm afraid, the phrase everyone here hates, now fits: the sky IS falling.

I'm not worked up. My only criteria was that we make a bowl and beat UVA this season. That's what we needed more than anything else to gain experience, recover injured young players, and build on recent successful recruiting classes (especially in the offensive line).
If we lose to UVA next week, then I can understand much more anger. And for me, that anger is primarily geared toward the offensive line. For me, Stacy Searels has severely disappointed me - every returning linemen played worse than last year before under his new blocking scheme and his attempts to get them bulked up. He's pretty much undone all the work that Grimes did the year before. Of course, the cupboard wasn't stocked for him either.
I don't really have good answers for how to arrest this fall. I don't think we can hire much of a better offensive coordinator this year under a pro-style run first offense with Frank Beamer's restrictions. And disregarding the rest of the baggage about forcing Frank out in his first losing season in 21 years, I don't think that we can hire a better head coach with openings at Michigan and Florida this year. Foster sounds great and all, but he's never been a head coach, so I don't want to assume that he can simply be the answer that Frank isn't. I don't see much of a better option than letting Loeffler and Frank stay through '16 before we start pulling plugs.
Unless we can magically convince Frank to lift restrictions on offensive coordinators. Man, I would be so okay with that.
Its just the the Offensive Coordinator. I dont think Frank is the change that needs to be made. But someone needs demand that that change be made. I hate that someone has to lose a job but that is the glaring hole is the o is and has been too predictable for even fans, much less other paid professionals. And new blood is needed now in the burg. We are constantly more afraid of what other teams do well on D then what we do well on O and we die by the sword of others vs our own. Bud may not have the best of days but you must beat him at his game vs taking himself out before you can stop what he does. Truth is I thought it would hurt recruiting and continuity by canning him or searching for a better OC but at this point we have nothing to gain either way except if we can try and find a proven guy an pay him something better than sitting on the couch and let him run his philosophy and let the chips fall as they may
Searels I think is actually better long term for what we want to do. I'm not worried about the O line down the line honestly. He is a power O line. I felt Grimes is too finesse and look at LSUs line this year not exactly the maulers they were. coincidence? I don't know.
Don't give up on Searels yet. A lot of the upperclassmen have never played at this weight during their careers and it shows. Yet look at what a player like Wyatt Teller can do in Searels' system. When Stacy gets his guys I think our OL will return to form.
True, but he did much less with better players at Texas and was fired for it. I wouldn't hold my breath.
Yeah, I don't disagree with this point. I'm reluctant to place all the blame on Stacy Searels for the hideous offensive line we've got. Offensive line in particular is tough to make quick changes and improve things since we only just got a class of proper talent to come in as freshmen this year.
However, given the system that Loeffler relies on with offensive line players relying on keys, pulling plays and many other mobility based actions, I question why Stacy was in such a hurry to bulk up the line. To my relatively uninformed perspective, it would have seemed better to keep the upperclassmen in Grimes' system and work in his changes gradually as players like Teller work their way into the lineup.
I also hope that my suspicions on Stacy are wrong, but Stacy is definitely the position coach I'm most critical of. I'm not over the moon about Loeffler, but I am very pleased with the work he and Aaron Morehead have done with our passing game in the past two years. The difference is that I think that we've got a better shot at getting another Grimes (can you tell I miss him?) than we do to get an upgrade at offensive coordinator.
For me, the blame for all this lies at Frank's feet. If you want to upgrade on Loeffler, I think Frank's got to go too. Where I differ from other commenters is that I don't believe that's justified in forcing him out. I can deal with a 5-7 season for the first time in 21 years. I am tepidly satisfied with his performance if he gets us back to a bowl. The money season for me is in 2016, when the good recruiting classes from the past couple years are firmly in the program.
But either way, I didn't see us winning a national championship in the next 15 years even before this slump and I thought 1999 was an aberration. College football is hard even when you're Michigan or Florida. It's even harder for VT, so I'm okay with the fact that we can't rack up 9-10 wins and an ACC division title every year.

Terrible program? People on here are acting like we are getting blown out every game.
We have a terrible offense and it's fair to complain about needing changes there, but this whole mentality that I've seen around here that us fans DESERVE better irritates me.
Why would the fans feeling they deserve better irritate you? Without the fans this team and this program are nothing. You can say that the fans aren't the ones sitting in the film rooms or running around on the practice fields, that they are nothing more than butts in the seats, but that would be completely wrong. The fans are the ones that funnel money into this program and show up at the games to cheer this team on.
They have every right to expect a good football team.
Because that deserve better mentality reeks of entitlement. Like somehow because we are virginia tech fans we deserve a great team. Like no other fan base should be rewarded except for us. That's sports. You have high and lows.
I'm not ok with the mediocrity I've seen, I expect better and if you feel you want to withhold donations from VT athletics I have no judgements. But some people here feel like they are personally owe'd by the team

I havnt seen a single person say we "deserve" a top tier team, although as I said in my initial response to your post the type of attitude that certain people are "better" fans than others because they have different expectations is the type of attitude that kills a sports blog.
The program is in bad shape. That has nothing to do with what anyone thinks they "deserve". It has everything to do with the fact the VT football program is heading in the wrong direction.

It's not an excuse but certainly is an eye opening stat.

If we put these same teams on the field now...Ohio St. beats us up by at least three scores. This season has regressed so badly I almost wish we hadn't won.
This one was definitely the worst game I have seen. Motley gave us a spark and got benched for it. This staff is done and has been for a while. I was disgusted with Frank celebrating that Wake kickers miss. Awful just awful. Time to give Bud a contract and put Frank in the nursing home where he belongs.

I just don't understand some of the decisions that were made offensively...I don't understand why we didn't play Motley more...I didn't understand why we would run for 12+ yards on first down..then get stuffed on the ensuing 1st down run and then abandon the run for the rest of the series...we did that multiple times throughout the game. I don't understand why we FINALLY got into fieldgoal range towards the end of the game AND THREW THE BALL?!?!?!?! We're not going to win games through the air...not with Brewer. We should have just run, run, run, kick. If we had kicked a field goal instead of throwing a backwards swing pass we would be walking out with a (very ugly) 3-0 win
We're upset because we are expecting less and less and still underachieving. I will continue to defend tech like I always do, and cheer and jump and scream at the TV, but today was abysmal.

Held them to 235 total yards.
Stats are not out yet but we had a bunch of sacks and hurries and an outstanding interception in the end zone.
The defensive play design was masterful and tricked the QB into that pass.

I've supported Frank, not blindly, but out of respect. I thought during last week's game (a win!) that I'm ready for the Frank Beamer era to end. If he has any professional pride, he'll resign tonight. Coach next week, of course, but announce he is done.
The Wake Forest loss was so bad that the fact that our basketball team lost to a winless team is sliding under the radar. Great day in Hokie athletics
All this said, I hope for a good crowd on Friday. Gameday atmosphere is about all we have going for us to impress recruits and to get us over UVA to a bowl.
The kids won't be there!
Not to mention it's Black Friday, and temperatures for kick off should be about 32 degrees and dropping. The only upside is that the game today essentially gave everyone a frontal lobotomy, so we should really notice anything next Friday.
Trying to decide if I want to read this entire thread... Since I already know how the book ends, I think I'll wait until after dinner to do so. By then it could be up to a thousand or so. That way I might finish sometime before midnight.
All I can say is two things:
1) Poor Defensive staff and Aaron Moorehead, please stay but I don't blame you for leaving.
2) My reactions lately is only a quick chuckle and on with my life. I have become numb to all of this.
I'm right there with you man...I used to let losses ruin entire weeks...I would completely shut down after losing tough games....now I just kinda shrug ("What we lost again? Figures...") and move on to the next thing

I agree Moorehead's receivers have done some great things, but what was up with the crappy blocking by the WRs on multiple plays? Still, I'd back keeping him.

This did not go unnoticed by me. Is he senile now? Your O could not score 3 points against a crappy team so you get pumped because the opponent has a spazlegged kicker. We used to block that kind of shit FRANK!
If Frank doesn't fire Loeffler, it's time for him to "step down". I sure hope he gets it and has the guts to pull the trigger. I'm afraid if we wait another year we will be in an even worse shape than this year. Some uneasy times in bburg...
