Local article on Newsome's changing of Emory & Henry's Football
Interesting tidbits
Its fun to read about old school teams that mashed their way to success with relentless ground attacks and hardcore coaches, but the spread is fun for players, coaches and fans. Of course, the E&H Spread and Shred represented a nightmare for opposing defenders.
The success for Newsome went far beyond the 8-2 record. The pass-happy style created a renewed buzz among media types, fans and alumni,
former coach Lou Wacker, who led the Wasps to 11 ODAC titles, had lots to say

...someone find French....
sounds like an excellent coach! we could use a guy like that in blacksburg.
i hear we may be in the market for a new offensive coordinator?
got me.
but "spread n' shred" does sound pretty fun.
That. Just. Happened.
He really said that.
Right, and ODU is going to be a national power within the next 10 years
That statement is wacker.
Newsome is running a pass happy offense.... and its working?
This makes me want to punch a kitten in the face
Watch it now
Good for him, just wish it would have worked out better for him in Blacksburg.
And by 'him', I mean me. I wish it would have worked out better for me in Blacksburg.
That's true... Newsome really can be a horse's butt on occasion
The really saD part is I'm sure there is more than one guy sitting in his house going " should have stuck with him instead if bringing in this crap guy from Auburn"
He had absolutely nothing to do with "building the Virginia tech program" if anything he's responsible for ruining what it once was
Kudos to him for this reward he earned it but let's be real he's not cut out for big boy football
SIDENOTE while he did help with tyrod (he wasn't alone) he also whiffed on numerous recruits and NEVER recruited offensive lineman. Even the linemen we brought in weren't from him trust me I just checked. He was awful as an offensive line coach
This is just more proof that Newsome is only really good at recruiting DIII talent.
Maybe he should have been OC instead...
It's more than silly to think that one position coach could 'ruin' a Top 25 program. Frank Beamer must have built a really weak program if one assistant coach could undermine it as drastically as claimed. True, Newsome did not train/coach his OL well at all. However, let's not revise what was factual then - none of the coaches recruited to their position, they all recruited based on geography alone. That did not change until Loeffler, Grimes, et.al arrived.
For all the ineffectiveness laid at Newsome's feet, all of it should also be laid at Frank Beamer's feet - for hiring him only as a reactionary measure to keep AlGroh from hiring Newsome, for allowing his OL to underperform, for approving the philosophy of recruiting TE's to convert to OL, and for all of Newsome's supposed other mistakes. Frank allowed all of it to go on, and even endorsed it all the while. Frank only fired him when absolutely forced to do so. So Frank deserves equal blame for anything hurled at Newsome.
As for Newsome at E&H, congrats to him for finding a place where he can succeed. It's more than a little ironic that he is capable of flexing his philosophy enough to embrace the 'Spread & Shred' uptempo offense. But that's probably a big factor in his team going 8-2, also.
Wonder if he needs a job? I have 24 head coaches on my staff, but there's always room for one more.
