Virginia Tech - Sweat visited Blacksburg for the UVA game in the season finale. They're the only in-state school in the race. Bryan Stinespring has recruited Sweat hard, and there are Oscar Smith Tigers already on the roster and committed to the Hokies. J.C. Coleman is a tailback for Tech, and Sweat's current teammate Deshawn McClease has already pledged to Virginia Tech.
The odds are good that Sweat announces a commitment to Virginia Tech on Wednesday. There's still just enough intrigue for the answer to be uncertain. A conversation with Josh on Friday night before the Ocean Lakes game revealed little, except that he was looking forward to completing the process. All five schools have gotten official visits. All five schools have had their opportunity to pitch. Now it's decision time.

No way. Saban is exactly how he comes off - he's just a football nerd who really really hates dealing with non-football football stuff. Les Miles is just a little on the crazy side, kind of like jack Nicklaus in the Shining, but not that crazy. But Jimbo... Jimbo is ruthless, conniving and calculated. Oh you guys shouldn't have. I stopped following the other one and tried to focus in life, now I have this brand new shiny thread to monitor while I wait.
I've always felt confident with Sweat. I don't think he's enamored with going to a bigtime school as some of the kids in the last couple of years. His mom has been consistently in our corner. He knows a lot of guys on our team.
After losing Ahmad Brooks and Kai Parham, VT was in trouble. Then, the next year, we got XAdibi, Hall and Ellis. It all works out.
Hoping we get DeBerry and Sweat

We're not going to get DeBerry, but I would like to see us finish with Sweat, Settle, Lawson, Alexander, Williamson, Nijman and Jahair Jones. Maybe a surprise like Kendrick Norton.
I would also like to see us find a big bodied WR that is a MAC level commitment to flip. Go find a 6'4" 210+ lb guy and give him his first major offer.

I get what you're saying, it just takes them a little while to develop. That being said I would love to have many Austin Clarks! I think Isiah Ford and Cam Phillips have shown that a young wr can step in, help, and contribute to our team.
It would be nice to mix in his height (and speed) with our skilled deep threats and possession receivers. Also, he would add an additional threat at the goal line which already includes our RB's (marshawn, trey, or shai) and bucky.
Just in case Sweat doesn't work out, I did watch clips of Rick DeBerry who is listed as outside linebacker but pretty much plays DE. DeBerry is a beast.
Also Among our current commitments:
Darius Fullwood and and Trevon Hill are about 6'3 and 238 and 220 LB respectively
Some of the other guys like Tremaine Edmunds and Carson Lydon are also listed as Outside linebackers on 247 sports, have size and can bulk up.
One thing i'm wondering is if Mihota will go back to DE since we are getting Luther Back and getting a few DTs in the recruiting process and one more year of experience for Ricky Walker.

It wouldn't surprise me if most of the CBs went FSU's way in the next few hours, regardless of where Sweat is going. The last couple hours is probably when you're gonna see all the picks start piling up, and those ones will almost certainly be his choice.
Yea at this point the CB doesn't mean a whole lot to me...especially after the Jalen Dalton nonsense when everyone suddenly had different "predictions" an hour before his commitment
FSU is definitely the popular pick among people that don't really have close ties to the situation, so when random analysts are picking FSU, I wouldn't really pay attention. However, if you start to see a mass of CB's that were originally on VT start to shift to FSU, or the VT insiders pick FSU, then I would panic. But neither of those things has happened so no need to worry about CB's at this point.
I wonder how much of that is attributed to the fact that to those people outside of Tech and FSU, FSU seems like a no brainer between the two of us.
That's pretty much entirely what it is. FSU is the reigning national champion and hasn't lost in 2 years. We're barely a .500 team over the last 3 years. FSU brings in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation year after year filled with 4 and 5 star players. We get a 5 star player once in a blue moon. Those are the facts that are nationally salient, so obviously FSU is the logical choice to the average outsider.
But Mom knows we're closer to home, CFB, et al have their kids interest in mind, VT provides top notch education and if the stars align that way, we still get kids to the NFl.

Precisely. Given Jimbo vs. Beamer and the Noles coming off their third straight ACC championship and heading to the playoff, it's easy to see why the #1 recruit in the country would pick FSU. However, none of them are Josh Sweat and none of them are listening in on the conversation he very well might be having with his parents right this second. Like you said, when the mass tide of picks comes, including VT insiders, then it's time to start accepting defeat.

Yeah, I'm happy they got into the playoff, because they definitely deserve it, but from what I've seen other teams have played better this year. Especially seeing Oregon just annihilate the team that gave them their only loss makes me think the seedings are pretty accurate. But hey, we'll see how the playoff goes.

While the number of people saying FSU is alarming, its still all speculation with little substance at this point. There's only one person who has any idea of where Josh Sweat is going, and that's Josh himself. So until something leaks directly from him, like he informed the schools of his choice already, these are all still just guesses.

The source is his mom in the article saying he has to feel comfortable around the coaches, that tells me maybe ours he doesn't, it also sounds like she likes Tech but he likes FSU. But Jimbo just seems like he has no control, he probably yelled like that so people will think he is credible, all this Jameis stuff and he is still playing says otherwise though. Plain and simple Jimbo has no control over his qb and yelling on live tv won't change that. And I don't know that Sweat is afraid of Bud, I don't think he has a reason to be, but from what his mom said about being comfortable around the coaches, maybe he wasn't? And Bud is the DC and sweat would play on defense so maybe the relationship between Bud or Wiles isn't as good as he has with some other coaches? But like everyone else I am just guessing at what is going on. And living in Va Beach I hate the thought of Jimbo coming into this area!

I am sure somebody has said this already, but he is just verbally committing tomorrow. Who know's when it comes to sign his LOI that it will be with the team he commits to tomorrow. Kids these days change their minds day by day and the way his mom has been public about her opinion on where he goes, who knows where he ends up at the end of the day. Personally I don't have a good feeling about Sweat, but not all is lost if he does commit to F$U/another school.
But "the world is ending" posts/comments are inevitable if he doesn't commit to the good guys.
Highly doubtful that he'd switch after he announces tomorrow. With the way he's handled his recruitment it would be pretty outrageous for him to switch. Plus being an early enrollee doesn't leave him much time to switch.
He plans on enrolling in January so the announcement tomm is pretty final.

While I agree that Josh would have been a great get, I'd prefer players who want to BE the best, not just play with the best. I want the guys who want to be heroes, not the guys who want to be just another guy on a talented team. Think of the immortality a guy would get if he was the critical piece that finally leads VT to filling that trophy case? Would you rather be the guy who was the first and is remembered forever? Or just another guy who played for a quality team and maybe won some games? Anyhow, I am rambling...so I will quit.

There has to be some uncertainty for recruits who are considering Tech these days. They're more than likely going to be there during a coaching transition. A lot of people seem to think that Beamer will coach next season and the 2016 season and then hang up the whistle.
That has to negatively effect us.
Why would a top recruit pick VT over a blue blood program? Have we ever consistently gotten 5* players? To get a guy like this he needs to grow up a Hokie fan and dream of playing in Lane, otherwise its a tough sell when other programs have titles are loaded with talent. Even Clowney grew up down the road from Columbia.

Frank is the head coach and runs our program.
Our program continues to not bring in this type of talent.
Regardless of whether he is the "primary" reason or not is irrelevant, I don't think that you can deny that he is part of the reason at this point.
My source? Check the results. Look, Frank Beamer is a legendary coach, there's no taking that away from him. But the fact of the matter is, none of these recruits care. College football isn't run the same as it used to be when we consistently got the top in state talent. He's old fashion in the way the program is run. Were at a point now where were LUCKY, not expected, to get a top 3 talent in the state of Virginia. So if you're looking for a source, you don't need one. You can look at what's happening in front of you.
I'm not sure a new head coach pulls in 5 stars by name alone to VT. I think it takes winning. No matter who it is we need to get back to winning.

If it was, Buzz wouldn't be having the recruiting success he is right now.
Not so sure basketball and football are the same. Basketball team has very few players and all get hands on direct coaching from Buzz. Recruits follow coaches more.

Players will follow a great coach no matter where he is employed. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that, when all else are equal (school is in a power conference with a rabid fanbase playing in a relatively large stadium) the coach of the team is more important than the pedigree of the school when it comes to landing recruits nowadays.
Ole Miss can partially be explained by the Nkemdiche/Lebron effect. Players followed him after he chose and he chose Ole Miss because he had a relative already on the team there.
you're talking about one case, and Ole Miss was a coup that year more than anything. he had a plan and got all recruits on campus at the same time and sold them as a team. great move.
Saban definitely brings in recruits by name though. But I still say basketball is different and it is much more prevalent there.
The reason is Robert Nkemdiche's older brother plays for ole miss and their mother wanted them to go the same school. After he came along, ole miss got flooded with 5start talent, I think 2nd only to bama.

Yep. This recruiting cycle went up in flames quickly. I know we still got some talented kids, but to keep missing these game changers is unacceptable, yet all to familiar for our program.

He has not taken a collegiate snap. Recruiting services said he's a game changer. He is not one yet at the college level.
Not to mention that some of the afterthought recruits you mentioned probably consider themselves to be game changers, regardless of what rivals and you think.
I understand that stud players can come from any star ranking. But seems delusional to deny the empirical data that suggests 5 * players turn out to be studs at a higher rate than those that arn't.
Seems to me the rallying cry of Virginia Tech ends up being "But look what we do with under the rader guys!?"
Well the answer to that question has been "Jack squat" for the last few seasons especially.
My issue is ( & not with you) that Hokie nation seems to forget about the four stars that want to be Hokies when the 5 stars spurn VT for the defending national champs, winners of 20+ in a row. Or Bama.
You act like the coaching staff doesn't want those guys as badly as we do. All indications are that the staff busted their ass in the recruitment of Sweat, but recruits are independent people who get to make their own decisions and there comes a point where it's out of the coaching staff's control.

Well our coaching staff may not (ever) bring in top tear talent (except the fullers) but they are great taking under the radar guys and making them great... defensively speaking.
Makes you wonder what they could do with guys that are already great. The Fullers are great evidence of what this coaching staff can do with top tier talent, and even those guys (save Kendall) wern't considered high end.
Exactly. And in Bud's scheme, he would have to play a role. Sweat couldn't dominate every play. I really don't understand how a DE or LB could ever be the #1 recruit in the country. A QB or RB can easily change your team in an instant however.
Plus, no idea how he comes back after that injury. Let's cry about him when he has success, not now. I do wish him the best though.
How much is it the coaches, and how much is it the school? We've only seen Beamer and his staff recruit since VT became good, so we don't actually know how much better or worse he is than a replacement-level coach here. I feel like VT is just a second place school to FSU or Alabama right now in nearly every way, and that's going to reflect itself on the recruiting trail
Want to consistently recruit 5stars. Win the bowl games, win marquee Prime-time games on the National Networks. Losing to WhackForest 6-3 probably turned a lot away.
This is another one of those days where I swear off following recruiting, which is just as much of a lie as they days I swear off drinking.

I think I hate FSU and Jimbo Fisher more now than Bobby Bowden and them in 2000. Good luck Josh and I cant pull for FSU any more I dont care about the ACC image if that image is Jimbo running a do what ever you want and we will sweep it under the rug program. I hope Oregon tears them 3 new assholes New Years Day.

Bowden was likable with a southern gentleman quality to him. Jimbo in the other hand is an arrogant prick and every time I see that smart ass smile on his face Id just love to see Bud come up from behind and punch him in the back of the head. With Bud sporting an expression like this................

Is there anyway possible for us to get an after the fact Q&A from the last 3 top guys that went somewhere else? I would love to know what exactly where we are lacking compared to the other teams in terms of the recruiting process other then the obvious that we all know. I would love to get a peek behind the curtains to see how our staff recruits blue chippers. I keep getting the feeling that we keep slipping farther and farther behind each year.
I'd imagine the perception is that VT is headed in the wrong direction.. and that's what these kids see until the results on the field show otherwise
If that is the case then why are the still a handful of stud player going to LOLUVA. I would think having mentality to want to right the ship if all we have been hearing the last two years "wait for 2015"
Because, as baffling as this is to even type, when it comes to getting the top guys they're doing something right and we're not. If they were to ever start realizing the need to recruit 4* players with the same intensity they recruit these 5* guys, the commonwealth will turn in a very decisive direction in their favor.
I love Bud Foster, and I want him to stay at VT as long as possible, but this right here is why Whit will not hire him as the next head coach. We need a closer on the recruiting trail. Jimbo Fisher is a closer and somehow Dabo Swinney is a closer. If we keep Bud, AND we get a head coach who can close on these recruits...we'll have that chance to win a NC.

I really liked it better when no one knew anything about recruits. I just showed up at the games not having a clue about who we did or didn't have on our team (star-wise), and enjoyed the damn game. Guess I'm getting old, because I long for those days.
I remember being in the stands in 1999 as a student and some of the old guys behind me were talking about how we had this new kid named Michael Vick that was going to be pretty good. First I'd heard of him, it was nice.
