This little tidbit seems to have slipped through the cracks.
OC Scot Loeffler tells Frank Beamer's website that #Hokies "came within a millimeter" of pulling Andrew Ford's redshirt vs. UVa.— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) December 9, 2014
At that point, Brewer was hurt, Motley was knocked out. But Brewer came back in the game and led #Hokies to a win.— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) December 9, 2014

I mean, it makes sense
yup competition in the summer/spring will be epic. Brewer/Motley/Ford/Durkin/maybe even Lawson if he flips!!!!!!!!!
Lawson huh?... That's a weird way to spell Buckey.
if we flip Lawson ....
Lookin good....
I like seeing those 5 names together. if we can shore up the o-line we may have something going offensively.
I mean, beating UVa is important and all.... but I would have been absolutely furious if this had happened. You do not burn a redshirt for one half of one football game at the end of the year. Ford has more value to us as a redshirt senior than he would have had against UVa. The fact they were even considering it is not really good to hear.
Idk I think it really shows how important that game is/was to VT. If we do lose Brewer and Motley what do you do? If we would have lost to UVA don't think Frank has any chance of staying next year, but we won and thank god Brewer is a manchild. "I'll keep getting up if you keep driving forward" <--- that is a BeastMode comment !!
A- save your ass and play Ford, save the 10+years, and 21+ years of bowl games
B- play Bucky at QB
C- play Rogers at Qb
D- who the f knows..
You don't win with him either way. He would ask for Beamers head either way.
Dude seriously piss off with the constant trolling
So I make two comments about your constant request for a change and I'm trolling? It seems every post you write is about this same topic, just restating over and over again. So sorry, I won't piss off.
Besides his obvious trolling with the new avatar he grabbed.
It's pretty obvious, especially from the disaster thread that he just flat out um, has a very strong dislike for CFB.
I'm starting to wonder if he is Hokie58....
He has a few good comments on occasion, but it seems the firing threads and comments dominate.
Oh well...
A loss to UVA doesn't just mean no bowl game. It means the end of our 22 bowl game streak, an end to out 10 game win streak on UVA and a loss of the money that the bowl game would have brought us. Maybe coach L thinks enough of Ford that he may be gone after 3 or 4 years to the NFL, in which the redshirt would do no good anyways. You can't predict the future, so you need to play to win in the present.
Extra practice time too, which we desperately need.
Sounds to me like they got the message they were playing for more than a streak and a bowl game. Leal missed his chance to ride off into the sunset on the white horse. The stage was set, last chance to make a bowl against the big rival and the starter gets hurt. The backup comes in and struggles, but after an emotional huddle speech, leads the team down the field to victory! JC Coleman knows what I am talking about.
You do realize that they had to pop Brewer's shoulder completely back in right? The staff didn't have a choice on whether to consider it or not, but they were saved by Brewer's insane toughness.
Then go with Bucky at QB running the option from here on out. We did it with Boone that one year when Tyrod and Glennon got hurt against FSU. Burning a redshirt for one half of one football game would have been the ultimate short term panic move that would potentially have had big negative consequences down the line.
Edit: Appears I was wrong, and it was Cory Holt
We used Cory Holt for that game.
Jinx...one of us is owed a beer here
By my timer, ohherro earns a beer by 4 seconds!
You're right..I gave a leg since Joe doesn't have cyber beers on TKP.....although that sounds Like a great idea
If you earn too many of them too fast, does your computer screen black out and lose its browser history temporarily?
Buzzed posting is Drunk posting
You are correct. In fact, Sean and Cory even talked about that a few weeks ago on the VT Huddlepass
Didn't we also use Boone as well? I thought there was one game where we were forced to use Boone almost exclusively because of injury.
No, Boone never played more than a handful of plays at QB in any one game.
And he played very well.
Wasn't that Holt?
I believe put in 3rd string Cory Holt when Glennon and Tyrod went down.
edit: WHOA WE ARE ALL SO FAST
I guess that would work.
I hadn't heard that he had to have his shoulder popped back in. Where did you hear that?
Considering Andrew Ford as an option for the best interest of Brewer and Motley's health is a good thing IMO not a bad thing. Has to be an option, whether it played out that way or not.
I'm very happy to hear they think so highly of him to think he would be ready to step in at that moment to help us out. I just don't think its worth ever considering burning a redshirt for any player at that point in the season, regardless of opponent. (unless a national title could potentially be on the line)
The fact the staff thought it was a good idea to publicize they almost made that decision speaks to how the team has been coached the last several years. Burn the 4th string QB's redshirt for the last half of the last game. Sure, that's not a knee jerk move at all.
I suppose nobody remembers that the 3rd string QB wasn't even coming to all the practices(because of class), and his time was severely limited because he knew so little about running the offense. Just think about the guy he beat out for 3rd string, you know - Ford. How was he supposed to actually provide any competency? It's almost as if the coaches were trying to recreate the dumpster they threw on Leal in the Sun Bowl, by refusing to play him all season. It's amazing that anyone is defending that near disaster.
I would imagine that since they were redshirting Ford that he wouldn't be on the depth chart regardless...even if he was better than Motley.
Bottom line is that Ford was the best option if the others couldn't go. Neither Bucky or Rogers had been in the QB meetings or had taken more than a handful of snaps all season, including practice. Ford had been in the meetings and had been taking practice snaps. He knew the plays better from the QB perspective and would have more plays available to him to run. I heard them say they would have burned the redshirt in the post game interviews and thought it made sense then. The game was that important to us, win or stay home. Plus if he didn't win the QB job next year, red shirt him then.
Loeffler said this on the radio right after the game as well. The way he said it on the radio sort of gave me the impression that he was making a point on how dire the game really went. Not that they necessarily would have actually pulled the trigger.
Why would we have played Leal last year? There wasn't a single blowout in which he could have gotten meaningful snaps. And Ford definitely has more upside as a QB (shoot, he might even be a better QB right now), but there's no point in burning a freshman's redshirt to be the 4th string QB when there's a r-sophomore in front of him. 'Cause, c'mon, who uses their 4th string QB anyways?..... wait....
If we are, as a program, worried about burning a redshirt on a 3 star QB when the alternative is starting a fullback at QB to try and beat our hated rival and extend a bowl streak then we have serious issues.
I figured they would just run Bucky at QB the rest of the game if need be. Or even Sam Rodgers...or is that cheating at this point?
How about a wildcat formation with direct snaps going to either Bucky or Rogers? The OL would be forced to block or have cleat marks in their backs.
No D in Rogers. In some districts that's punishable by 100 turkey legs.
On the one hand, burning a redshirt halfway through your last (regular season) game sounds like a terrible idea. On the other hand, you're probably going to be fired if you lose, so short term trumps long term.
I'm just glad it didn't actually happen. The uproar would have been immense either way. If he does well, you should have done it sooner. If he does poorly, you shouldn't have done it at all.
It was mentioned on the postgame radio show, near the end. Bill and Mike passed along that Loeffler would have used Ford because Bucky had not taken QB reps in a while. As an aside, it was bizarre to hear the postgame show at nearly 1 in the morning.
This is old news. Are we the only ones who heard this on the postgame show? I seem to recall Loeffler said it directly in his post-game interview though.
yep, heard it on my Sirius-XM.
If he burns it and then becomes a 3 year starter, that's a pretty good career. If he doesn't start next year, he can still redshirt. If he never gets the redshirt opportunity again, its probably because he is starting. So, while not preferable, I would not have lost my shit.
Pretty much sums it up in my mind.
If he turns out to be great and he loses a year because he played for one half of a game, wouldn't we be disappointed? Would be like how we got shorted a year with tyrod.
Would have loved one more year with tmobile. Logan could have been a tight end...
Back when that happened my roommate stated he didn't like burning Tyrod's reshirt at all. It was basically "mortgaging our future." He was right.
I guess we now know what that Plan C was..
I think at that point we should have gone "Team Steamroller" with Bucky in the shotgun, 10 O- and D-linemen and rumble to victory!
paul johnson is that you???
He said use 10 lineman, not "purposefully target our opponents knees hoping to destroy them and then their backups and thus rumble to victory"
Nope, notice how I said "shotgun". CPJ thinks that's something you call on the way to the team bus.

I'm actually...
#MANball
Ah, coach NFL. I loved when you punted from the USC 28 yard line this season. And when you played for a field goal attempt in the Fiesta Bowl when you had Andrew Luck at QB in his final game for you. Nice work.
say what you want about Brewer's skills but man o man does he give EVERYTHING he's got.
Here's the shot of what happened to his shoulder. That man is one tough hombre that we should all be proud to call a fellow Hokie.
If anyone wants to experience just what Brewer went through there, have a buddy hold your arm in that exact position, and then try to bring your arm forward as hard as you possibly can, and see what happens.
You should probably have the number of your local emergency room handy.
Great, now I'm going to try it.
I don't know about you but I can't get my arm into that position to try and throw in the first place.
New nickname for Brewer: Gumby
Makes me think of that NFL player, I can't remember which one, but a couple years ago who completely rolled his foot. It was practically upside down, he went out for a play, and then came back in and had a hell of a game. The announcers were like "An ankle is not meant to bend that way. I'm not sure how he's still standing."
I really wish I could remember who it was.
Remember this?
Greg Nosal played without tip of pinkie
wow!!
Wow, I have not seen that picture. I cannot believe he came back in the game. Somebody else posted it but it's true, he cannot be killed by ordinary weapons.
Okay. Oh...oh my...
I will say that personally I hope one of the freshmen is game ready and wins the job, but if Brewer is the starter next year then there better not be a damn stadium full of people booing him. He puts his heart on the field and fights, and he deserves better than that pathetic showing from the fans.
This times a million. Hearing some of the silliness in the stadium was frustrating.
I hope Brewer can work hard and get it together over the off season. Without a doubt he has heart and its hard to not route for him to succeed. Gets slammed to the turf over and over and gets up and wants to keep going
Ok, I'm sold. This guy parties balls out.
I'll keep getting up if you keep pushing- Feck yeah.
This guy is a Hokie through and through.
Here's hoping this year of experience with the WR and O- line nets an improved offense. He deserves a lot of doubt coming in again after this.
Yeesh... suddenly I don't want to party with him anymore
I don't know. Druckenmiller was fun to party with and this was very near to his style.
Hey, he was acquitted
Just in general. He and Cornell had a good time, I'll say that.
Ooooh, that made me pucker.
We need a qb made out of rubber until the o-line is able to the qb upright.
He's our buddy lee.
Thank god that didn't happen
I thought we should have burned his redshirt vs. ECU, so whatever.
It's a rare day a QB plays for four years anyway, so I wouldn't have minded that. I wouldn't have preferred it, but I wouldn't have minded it.
I can't say I totally blamed him. I mean the cam crew kept going over and showing shots of Ford and Durkin on the sideline and it looked like they were dressed, eager, and ready for a moment's notice for action. Ultimately I'm glad Brew iron-balled up and kicked the hoo's asses outta there. Plus it would've been funny $ec$pn showing Isaiah Ford's profile pic for Andrew's. Needless to say the open QB competition will be very interesting this offseason.
I have to believe Hodges or Rogers would have been called on since the game plan was to use both QBs. I can't imagine they went into that game without some sort of contingency plan.
Besides who wouldn't like to see Rogers take the snap and throw a pass to himself. No defense could stop that!
