Anybody watching the 30 for 30 Documentary Right Now?

Man those VT vs. Miami games were a really big deal 10-15 years ago.

This era held some of my first CFB memories. I vaguely remember the dropped 2-pt conversion; I don't think I realized at the time just how huge that game/moment was.

Loudest I have ever heard Lane Stadium life. Loved to hate on Dorsey. Screamed so loud nearly passed out. If only we had gotten that win!!

I was on the press box side and the stands shook. It is one the loudest moments in sports I've been witness to in person.

They kind of glossed over that game quickly, but we came for them that day, and had their number and had beaten them 5 straight times until the previous year. In all honesty, that 2001 Miami team was one of the sickest groups ever assembled in college football.

Yeah, FiveThiryEight (Nate Silver's new site) had an article on the most talented teams of all-time recently and it had 7 teams that we had played IIRC including 2 Miami teams that we beat.

Ernest Wilford...worked his tail off after that drop and got so much better

The 2000 loss was tough...if only Vick had been healthy!

That ankle was Vick's bugaboo. It always seemed to be an issue.

Yep. he hurt it in his first game, when he flipped into the end zone. I don't think it ever was 100% right afterwards.

I didn't watch the 30 for 30 because the first one irritated me so much. A very slanted celebration of all things 'Cane just didn't sit well with me. I did listen to an interview with the producer of this one earlier this week, and determined the same mindset was evident for the second as the first. Lots of revisionism by the fanboys on it, so I skipped.

I do miss the battles from the Hokie games with them. Now, when we play them, it's just not as exciting.

Fun fact - of the five MNC's that Miami won, four of them were played on their home turf, the Orange Bowl. Wonder how many titles Alabama would win under Saban if they played the championship game in Tuscaloosa? or F$U under Bowden playing at home? It makes things a little different.

the VT MIAMI matchup not as exciting recently because neither team has had much to gain. Was it 2010 when it was a #10 v #9 matchup? That was a FUN game....for us. But even before that game played out, it was just something to get really excited about. Not since then has the game meant so much. It'll happen again. We'll be back to the respected powerful contender that we built a reputation for being, and sooner or later, Miami will field an elite team that can execute.

"How you doin', Randy?"

It was 2009. Rained the whole time and we controlled the whole game. One of my favorite games I've been to.

I thought the match up has been pretty exciting for recently other than this year and 2012.
Last year we went to their house and just kept scoring.
2012 - Not exciting between 2 mediocre teams.
2011 - Logan Thomas. Can't find a game more exciting than that.
2010 - Beat them on their turf to clinch the coastal and it was between 2 ranked teams.
2009 - as it was mentioned above. That was a game between two highly ranked teams.
2008 - Very close game that Miami pulled out on a Thursday night for their senior night.

I would say it's been pretty exciting.

2007 we won 44-14 at lane stadium, i think you mean 2008, we lost at miami 16-14

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Yep I stand corrected.

I started at VT in 2006 (I wasn't really a college football fan until I got to college), so I didn't really get the rivalry until last night...does UVa, GT, Miami and BC constitute our four biggest rivalries?

GaTech & BC aren't rivals of ours at all. They just play us tough in football games, well BC plays us tough in basketball too, but that's another topic. UVa is our rival for all time, Miami became our rival because of their overall success and our success against them.

WVU is actually our second biggest rival, and perhaps the one with the most venom. UVa is a lifestyle rival. Despite it sounding cliched, there is just a massive difference in a hoo & a Hokie. With WVU you erase the condescending arrogant snob factor & replace it with a different dynamic.

I'd rank our rivals as such...
1. UVa
2. WVU
3. Miami - because it is football only

Nobody else is a rival. The GT thing is about Bud vs. Paul Johnson's triple option, nothing more. You can't play the engineering angle, because it's irrelevant and because GT doesn't care about us. We don't even care about them. It's just seeing Bud try to shut down the triple option. BC is probably the closest reason for us to call them a rival. Except they care zero about us as a rival, and we only think of them because we struggle to beat them for some reason.

In the future, you might see us spark up a rivalry with Louisville. it just depends on a lot of factors, though.

I absolutely consider GT a rival. Since we joined the ACC, for the most part, its either us or them in the coastal. Their coach is a jerk, their scheme is f'ing annoying and I loathe losing to them. From where I am standing today, they are far closer to a rivalry than Louisville will ever be.

F*** Georgia Tech.

"How you doin', Randy?"

Agree 100%. There are three games that I circle on the calendar every season - GT, UVA, and Miami. The outcome of the Techmo Bowl always has implications for the Coastal title.

"Exit light..."

It's a battle of the two most well known "Tech's" in the country. Those are definitely the three games I circle and the three teams I can't stand losing to more than anyone else. And the VT-Miami football rivalry has been going on so long it's seeped into other things I think most VT fans now hate anything with that stupid U on it.

MIT? Cal Tech? TT?

Maybe you meant in football. Then yes, along with TT. If you're talking about school, it's MIT, and not close.

Has anyone ever called MIT "Tech"? Because I know I never have.

I don't think you entirely understand the comment.

I hate GT almost as much as UVA. If fact, it might be equal.

Could not agree more, luckily Poly Teching >>>> Single Teching

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

I went to GT. Trust me, they care about us.

We are the Hokies. We will prevail. We will prevail. We will prevail. We are Virginia Tech.

The kids who go to school today don't hate WVU with a passion since we haven't played them in so long.

Never crimp your blasting caps with your teeth. - Dr Haycocks

Its always 110 Holden...said every mining engineer ever.

Those of is that grew up watching Tech or in southwest Virginia hate the cousins over any other team including Thug U and Jefferson's College

To be blunt, I really don't see WVU as a rivalry anymore. We never play them, there's not really any similarities between the schools and it's not like we have a heated basketball or other olympic sport rivalry with them.

That will return after the first game we play them. For those who remember back a decade, it hasn't left. We've thankfully not been playing them, but the rivalry is right there, ready to be torched like a couch on a Saturday night.

Oh yes. It won't take long for that fire to be lit.

As a newer VT fan, do yourself a favor and watch the 2004 WVU game. Between the 2003 and 2004 games there were 18 personal fouls called (only 3-4 in this years UVA game)- suffice it to say that we hate(d) each other. That's not even getting into the fans situation. It's probably the only rivalry in the country that was discontinued because of how nasty it was getting.

The schools are rivals because of proximity. Hell, with the Blacksburg wind one could spit and hit West Virginia. Also, the fan bases, in their original incarnation, are very similar- full of good ole' boys and rednecks. While VT's student body has changed, a significant number of Tech fans still have to deal with West Virginians. Doesn't help that WVU fans are nationally known for being awful.

All of this is why I've been a little surprised to hear people call for Rich Rodriguez to replace Beamer. He is/was a considered West Virginia snake oil salesman of the first degree and a damn sonuvabitch when he was at WVU.

Not to mention almost burning the town down the last time they won here....

Yep, I think so. LOLUVA, then Miami, then GT, then BC.

In order - UVa, WVU, and Miami

Those are the 3 rivalries where we equally hate each other. GT is in this funny zone where they are only really our rival if something is on the line, and really only in terms of football. If we play GT in basketball, other than it being an ACC game, I really don't give a crap. The other 3? That's a rivalry I see across all sports.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This is how I see our rivals as well.

I tend to gauge rivalries based on my gut reaction to when I see an opponent's logo when I'm out and about. For instance, how hard do I lol when I see that UVA sticker on that Prius? What about the giant WVU sticker plastered on that 2500 with a 6" inch lift and truck nutz? How about that giant "U" on the back of that pearl white escalade? These are things you have to consider. Do you really care about that nerd gassing up his van with the GT sticker on the back?

All of that said, I hate West Virginia with every ounce of my being. I am openly hostile to people with West Virginia gear on. I almost didn't go to the OSU game because I had to drive through the state of West Virginia. I am on a Woody Hayes level of hatred with them.

I could see a rivalry with Pitt blossoming. They always seem to have our number.

They filled the role of Georgia Tech in the Big East days. They had our number but it wasn't really at the level of the other 3.

Track scholarships!!!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Watched some of the show tonight with my GF. She learned her scholarship to UMiami in the 90's was funded by a Ponzi scheme (part of Allen Stanford's $6 million in donations to UMiami).

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

Seriously, has a Top 5 team ever been so thoroughly dominated?

Well, according to the 30 for 30 it was all due to the phantom PI call in the 2002 NC game.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

total BS!!!!!

Yeah they were still reeling from that loss 10 months prior when they came in unbeaten in November
