Since any level of violence brings a flag in the NFL, next time he should launch himself with the crown of his helmet to show them an example of what they are trying to protect against.

Yeah you're right. The fact that Ryan still had the ball made it worse. I wasn't watching the Pittsburgh vs Atlanta game so I don't know what the game situation was (I was at the Ravens game). But I was watching the Seattle vs San Fran game and on that play Wilson had just thrown an incompletion in SF's territory on third down. Two plays later they scored a TD. So that was a huge call given the situation.

Holy cow was that really ruled a personal foul? I actually think proper tackling technique needs to be emphasized more but the NFL and NCAA have largely failed on correctly identifying hits that should be flagged.

If I were to go teach a little league team how to form tackle, I would show them this video. Head up, bite the ball, explode from your hips, wrap up, and drive into the ground. I'm absolutely dumbfounded as to how this was a penalty. I'm all for player safety, but this is ridiculous.

Why do we even bother watching the NFL? It's not even real football. The NCAA screws up about as often as Mike London at the end of a game, but they seem to have gotten close to finding a decent balance between keeping the players safe and letting them play the game (with a few exceptions.... lookin at you, Zumwalt).

Not to mention the NFL really sucks when a) your team sucks b) your fantasy team sucks, and c) when both your real and fantasy teams suck so bad that you stop caring after week 9. Go Redskins *ducks and hides*

I don't really bother with the NFL anymore. Maybe it's the four total games I have the option of watching, maybe it's that my team is terrible.
But at least in college I can watch any of about a hundred games on any given day across multiple networks. Who cares that my team was terrible. The players are just good enough to do something spectacular but not good enough to royally f*** up the next play and let someone else do something spectacular.
Fans are better, too.

It was a flag for unnecessary roughness, I was screaming at the screen when they threw it. Didn't matter though, watching my Steelers get some revenge on Him made me happy.

The NFL is getting absolutely ridiculous in the amount they are protecting the QBs
You don't want them to get hurt? Fine, put some goddamn flags on them and call em down at first contact. I'm so tired of the defenses being handcuffed by all these stupid rules. Between this one and the gamechanging call in the Seattle vs San Fran game yesterday, this stuff has got to stop.
The problem is, with all the concussion lawsuits out there, not only are these calls not going to stop, they're only going to get worse going forward. Its getting to the point where you're not going to be allowed to tackle any ballcarrier above the waist, because the league doesn't want to run the risk of whiplash concussions. I mean the Worilds hit and the one in the SeaVsSF game were textbook facemask to chest plates, and they were both called egregious 15 yard penalties.
Lost in the off the field madness is just how much Roger Goodell is absolutely ruining the football game on the field with all these new rules. Eventually, the viewing public is going to turn their backs and never look back. This is not the same game we grew up loving.

I watched this live and there was a replay from behind the play that clearly showed it was a perfectly clean hit. He didn't use the crown of his helmet and didn't hit Matt Ryan in the head.

Whats the deal with this rule I heard about in the GB game where the offense can't advance a fumble if not recovered by the person who fumbled if it is in the last 2 minutes even if it is fumbled backwards? Horrible Horrible rule
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah I am not arguing the call, just the rule. If you are worried about that, at least make it so the offense can only advance it to the point of the original line of scrimmage. No need to penalize the offense for recovering their fumble. There are some horrible rules in the NFL these days. I rarely watch the NFL because they try and create entertainment (offense) by skewing the rules in their favor instead of letting the game be played as it should be.

My only complaint is that the ball was fumbled backwards... In essence, it was a lateral. If the ball is fumbled forward, then yeah, only the guy who fumbled should be allowed to advance it, but it was a live ball that was essentially lateraled backwards.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree with that. I am not sure if it is at the NCAA or NFL level or both but isn't it that with under 2 minutes left, if the offense recovers a fumble that was fumbled forward, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble?

Does anyone recall a few years back when we did this? I forget who it was, but our guys intentionally fumbled the ball forward and kept batting it downfield. I think it was called back because it was pretty blatant, but I remember sitting in the stable laughing, thinking it was awesome?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You just gotta be more like Trent Green and be awesome. No this wasn't a fumble, but it was awesome and I'll never forget laughing my ass off at Dwayne Rudd. Still laugh at him, but 99% of people think I'm crazy because they don't remember this.

I'm not so sure about this. Sure, there wasn't as much SEC bias then, but would they really put us in front of the LSU team that beat the living shit out of us in Week 2?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The fact that LSU spanked us silly was going to hold us out of any title game talk in lieu of LSU regardless of end of year record. Make no mistake, that WAS the talking point being hammered home time and time again by ESPN and the media heads. Remember, we finished that year #1 in the computer polls, and the human polls punished us so badly that we finished a rather distant 3rd in the final BCS rankings.

My only question is what the hell was that flag for?
Almost positive it was ruled an illegal hit.... somehow
"Hitting a quarterback hard in the NFL"
15 yds - Personal Foul - Boston College Revenge Targeting
Roughing the passer. Though I never saw a pass.
Since any level of violence brings a flag in the NFL, next time he should launch himself with the crown of his helmet to show them an example of what they are trying to protect against.
I don't see a hold anywhere, so I have no idea what the flag is for.
The RB should get a 20 yard penalty for not picking up Worlids after the TE released though...
Nah
I guess you aren't allowed to sack the QB anymore. That's all I saw.
Kinda looking like that is a new rule with the call in the San Fran-Seattle game too.
Saw that too...that one was just as bad
I think this one is worse by far. Russell Wilson had at least thrown the ball before getting hit. This looks like a clean sack to me.
Yeah you're right. The fact that Ryan still had the ball made it worse. I wasn't watching the Pittsburgh vs Atlanta game so I don't know what the game situation was (I was at the Ravens game). The NFL later ruled that a bad call. So there's hope.

If it even looks violent someone's going to get flagged. I'm all for safety but there's a line where it crosses over into craziness
I like ATL but that's a clean hit.
Just happy it was Matt RYan
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times.
F*** Matt Ryan.
And that might be the cleanest sack of the season. In no universe is that a penalty.
No Fun League
Forget this stuff, just put flags on and stop tackling altogether.
Time for Sarcastaball

What season and episode was this? I must watch it immediately!
Season 16 episode 8
Awesome. Thank you!
Sarcastaball
SUCK IT MATT RYAN!!!
Jason Worilds sacks Matt Ryan with a huge hit. Roger Goodell fines James Harrison $20,000.
That was beautiful.

Deon Newsome would be a pretty big exception as well.
Not to mention the NFL really sucks when a) your team sucks b) your fantasy team sucks, and c) when both your real and fantasy teams suck so bad that you stop caring after week 9. Go Redskins *ducks and hides*
9?
Man, you were lucky this year.
I think I lost all my RB after week 3.
Yeah my one-two punch of RBs were Adrian Peterson and Zac Stacy, so I'm right there with ya buddy. Not fun
Hail to the... wait what are the words again?

On one hand I'm glad someone actually watched the game and let us know what happened.
On the other hand I still hate the answer.

We still need many more hits on Matt Ryan like this one to make up for the 2007 game...
While I agree the ACC championship and this are a good start.
Whats the deal with this rule I heard about in the GB game where the offense can't advance a fumble if not recovered by the person who fumbled if it is in the last 2 minutes even if it is fumbled backwards? Horrible Horrible rule
The rule was in response to the Holy Roller play from 1978. Link
They made the right call in the game - it's just a terrible rule.

Leg for your stable mention.

I know that no one wants to remember that 2007 game, but lets not forget the ACC Championship game in which we demolished "Matty Ice" 30-16.
He went 33/52 for 305 yards, 2 INTs and 0 TDs.
yeah but we would have been #2 at the end of the season if it hadn't been for the first BC loss.
I'm not so sure about this. Sure, there wasn't as much SEC bias then, but would they really put us in front of the LSU team that beat the living shit out of us in Week 2?
That LSU team had 2 losses, and we would have only had one. Those losses meant a lot back then.
The fact that LSU spanked us silly was going to hold us out of any title game talk in lieu of LSU regardless of end of year record. I ain't mad because Adibi and Hall kicked his ass all over the field and out the stadium in the ACCCG. Suck it BC haters.
Suck it, Matt Ryan
