Like has been said all along by a few, it is far too difficult to hire a quality OC when he knows he will be looking for a job again in two years, with no real opportunity to turn around a dismal offensive unit. And oh yeah, he can't bring ANY of his own people in to work with him.
You can't get anybody good to agree to that, so you might as well ride out the last two years with Loeffler.
So now the real speculation can begin.

I really wonder what is going on with the situation with Bud, you would have thought they would have cleared it up by now. I am wondering if they are waiting for Beamer to get back into action to make an announcement. Other thought was is there a possibility that Frank's health situation might have him thinking of retirement after the bowl? I believe it is likely to be announced soon but I do wish they would announce a signing to clear my worried mind. :-)
Bud's actual quotes leave a lot of room for optimistic interpretation without necessarily having the requisite foundation. His actual quotes say he hasn't talked to anyone. Coaches never actually talk to another school until it is time to finalize details & sign the contract. Bud says he hasn't talked to his agent. That's not unusual, since he's been recruiting the last two weeks. The fact he hasn't talked to his agent also proves that all the backslapping about how Bud was ready to sign a new contract with VT was totally wrong. Bud's got a rollover contract as was mentioned. To change that, his agent would have to review details of the new contract with Bud. According to Bud that hasn't occurred.
So, based on what Bud is saying - here's what we know. Bud's not doing anything until he gets the annuity in his bank account. Then we'll see what happens, and where.
Which leads to the elephant in the room. The one being strangely ignored by media & internet posters. Frank Beamer's health. Frank still hasn't returned to practice, to even observe or watch film with the staff. This isn't a criticism, relax. It's merely the observation. According to Bud, Frank will be back 'real soon'. Well, the team goes to Annapolis next Tuesday & plays next Saturday. I'd say Frank will 'have'(emphasis) to return 'real soon' if he is going to coach in the bowl game.
As a reminder - the Associate Head Coach, the guy who takes over if Frank is unavailable for some reason, who was that again? Oh yeah, his son, Shane. Wouldn't the Military Bowl be quite notable if Frank didn't coach it, Shane did in his place & got 'head coaching experience' on his resume? Frank retired because of 'wanting to spend more time with the family', but with some health issues nagging? That might also help explain why Bud isn't signing a contract with anyone right now...

The very next words following where you cut off the quote. Why do you think I put the relax in there, for emphasis? For the very reason that I knew somebody would leap before understanding. I know you're lunging for an excuse to defend Frank over something that wasn't a criticism, but try not to overreach quite so much.
As a secondary point, every patient consults with the doctor prior to surgery. A person in Frank's position, knowing the timeline he was dealing with, this was a peculiar time to have a supposedly 'minor procedure' as was spun after the news leaked out. Why not wait two weeks & do it after the bowl game, if it was so minor?
I know the real story won't come out until after the first of the year, but there seems to be more to the story that no one wants to discuss. This bowl game is going to be notable, for so many reasons.
Oh, and I shouldn't have to say the obvious, but evidently I do - I wish Frank Beamer all the best in whatever recuperation from whatever surgery he had.

I tend to agree here, at least in the viewpoint that Frank's health is a significant issue and may lead to changes. Would it surprise anyone for him to come back for the bowl game, maybe even "coach" from the booth, then announce his retirement after NSD due to health issues? But Frank's absence right now is telling, to me at least. I don't believe that this was a simple procedure. Simple procedures can wait a few weeks.
I'm not afraid of this being a method for Frank sliding Shane into this spot. First of all, I'm a Whit guy and Whit is going to hire the right person for the position. He's not going to get duped into "Well, Shane's the HC now, he coached the bowl game." Second of all, I'm a Shane guy in that he has worked for high quality coaches his entire career and is qualified for the position he is in and will likely be a Head Coach someday, maybe soon. I strongly do not believe that Shane Beamers first HC position will be at VT. I expect he takes a lower tier job like his dad did and work his way up, potentially coming back home later in his career.
My supposition above about Frank/Shane was not at all about getting Shane the VT job. It was about getting Shane the plum of 'head coaching experience in a pressure game' as a parting gift by Frank to help Shane when he went elsewhere. Plus, it is no more than a minor thought about how part of the much larger picture could play out.
This is going to be a very notable bowl game.

Or, this could simply be a pretty strong indication of how little CFB is involved in actual game prep these days. Maybe Foster, Loeffler and staff can prepare for the bowl game without CFB's presence because it's what they are used to.

This is where I get confused sometimes. A couple of years ago we were hoping Frank would hire someone and let THEM run the offense without interfering too much, and now it seems we're complaining that he isn't involved in game planning enough indicative of Bobby Bowden and FSU's decay. Sometimes I think no matter what he does, he'll never win.
You've just summed up college coaching for 95% of the people involved in the profession.
If you look at my comment, it wasn't a complaint. I was just stating my view (really only a guess) that Frank isn't as involved in the game planning as he used to be. I'm not complaining about it. Im not really even saying I think it is good or bad. Just IIWII.

On the serious side, that is completely in context with his personality when you consider it.
Beamer has rearranged his office. His desk used to be on a different wall if I remember correctly from when I was last there. I think the window was behind his desk. Though I REALLY want that VT pirate ship. That is pretty sweet.

Actually, yeah, that one was. Also met Greenberg on that day, though he wasn't very pleasant. Granted, he was fired about 2 months later. But I've been through the coaches' offices other times even for personal autographs. The lounge outside of Beamer's office is really nice though.

How about this....Frank needed minor surgery, he needs time to recover, he has experienced coordinators and staff to run the practices while he gameplans and communicates with them while recovering from home instead of being out in the cold Blacksburg weather. And is it so hard to believe that Foster hasn't communicated with his agent about any of the coaching positions? He is trying to prepare a scheme for the bowl game against a pretty good offense that will strain the defense, without the Head Coach at the practices.
Is there an extension on the table? I doubt it. Why would they present him with an extension right in the middle of preparing for the Bowl Game? Why enter that distraction into the equation? If you had the slightest thought that he wouldn't sign it, then this is NOT the time to offer it. Even if you know for a fact he will sign it why put something else on his plate right now? He would then have to have meetings with his agent, discussions about what he is wanting and what he is not wanting, etc.... Just more distraction, let the man do his job first. Wait until at least after the bowl game, possibly until after the first of the year, then discuss future plans.
Are other teams after him? Maybe, maybe not. If they are they would either communicate with him or his agent and then his agent would talk to him. His saying that he hasn't talked to other teams or his agent tells me that nobody has tried to contact him yet.
Maybe I'm nave, but I like to believe what people are saying until I see proof that they're not being honest. Conspiracy Theories can be fun, but more often than not they are a gigantic waste of time.
While this is generally a good way to live your life, I don't think it applies to public figures speaking in a public venue. I would not take at face value anything any coach says to a microphone. I don't believe Bud would lie, but I wouldn't expect him to lay all his cards on the table either.
The vast majority of the time it comes down to semantics. That is how a coach can 'honestly' say - 'Nobody from another school has contacted me' while technically his agent has indeed been contacted and has held lengthy negotiations with another school. That's how a coach can 'honestly' say - 'I haven't even talked to my agent for a while' when technically, he's texted & emailed his agent and visa versa. Both statements are true in their purest sense. They just avoid the complete picture, which is several schools have been in negotiation with the coach's agent and the coach & agent have been in non-verbal communication frequently.
It's all how you play the game. Just ask Nick 'I am NOT going to Alabama' Saban.
I remember the whole Nick Saban thing and how it was blown up like it was a big deal, and I even had an FSU friend of mine talking about how horrible a person Saban is because of that, but I don't buy it for a second. When media catches wind of something, they'll ask about it and he had no option but to deny it. Same thing happens to just about every coach who has opportunities. I don't hold it against any of them.
Exactly my feelings. If anyone is at fault, it's the news media who won't let the guy live his life and makes his announcement on his own terms. It's not like he's an elected official and the "people have a right to know" and hold him accountable. His boss has a right to know. His wife has a right to know. The fans find out when we find out.
Interestingly, I heard Mike and Mike praise Harbaugh for how he handled one of these questions last night. He said something along the lines of, "I only discuss the team I'm coaching right now, which is a longstanding policy. Next question".
This would have been obviously better for Saban to say, but I'm with you, the only reason someone would have to jump through hoops about this kind of thing is if the media won't leave it alone.

Pitt Interviewed the DC from Mich State and plans on interviewing 5-7 more people. Plan on bringing in a HC before new AD to get a hold of recruiting.
Hate to say, but we aren't out of the woods yet. With Pitts issues at coaching (7 since 2010 or something like that), a guy like Bud would be a great fit there.
Why, with all the other experienced head coaches out there that could fill that position, would they pick Bud Foster as their next head coach?
