I'm assuming he doesn't have the ball skills to play on the wing (otherwise they would have listed him as a small forward)...I'm assuming Buzz wants him to bulk up a little before he makes an offer.

Its interesting that he is getting recruited by schools like VCU, Vandy, UVa, and Miami, and yet it seems like he has the most interest in going to Virginia Tech, where we haven't even offered a scholly, yet.
That kind of sentence would have been unfathomable 10 months ago.

I was playing pick-up at STAB a couple months ago and VT was there recruiting him. I haven't seen an official offer from us listed anywhere, but we're definitely interested.

2- STAB is a private Christian school so I'm not sure about the quality of their opponents

Let's see if he is as enthusiastic about playing defense as he is about dunking over slow, small unathletic guys. We need guys who want to play the whole game. Best of luck to him, wherever he decides to go. The reason we might not have offered him yet could be because Buzz doesn't think he projects as well as other similar players that project better. When you know a player is eager to attend, but you're not in love with his play, etc. you hold the offer for a while.

Projecting 6 9 guys has to be at least as hard as offensive line. So much depends on work ethic, development of feet, putting muscle on a long frame, and some incredible athletes never learn how to shoot. Hats off to folks who have to earn their living projecting these guys. Yes they are freaks, but can they be good basketball players?

Exactly right. That's why you can never really tell anything from highlight films of HS players in either basketball or football. Sure, a guy may look fast, but is that compared to a bunch of slow, unathletic scrubs? maybe a player dominates a game, but is horrible in practice and the classroom. All that stuff is best left to the coaches. It's fun to hope/wish a player could come to VT, but I never spend much time on it, because until they step onto the court or the field, we never know how they'll do.

This is one of the main reasons when I am evaluating a players stuff I really try to find videos of them playing on the AAU circuit, because then I have some level of certainty of the quality of opponent. Not all AAU programs are equal but they do usually cull most of the non skilled players from the ranks. If I am unable to find video like that, I try to reach out to their coaches for it or just have to caveat any statement of my evaluation with a statement of it being based on a player selected highlight reel. Those reels tend to almost always be dominated with offensive highlights and very little defense. Its only when they are trying to showcase a big mans ability to block shots or rebound that you get defensive highlights.

However, if you see the video, he clearly takes a dribble a step after getting possession, and then only takes 3 steps after (pivot, plant, launch) which really isn't traveling. The gif makes it look A LOT worse than it really is.

2) There are plenty of private Christian schools that produce elite level talent, especially in the state of VA just FYI. Example: Cape Henry Collegiate is the home of Chris Clarke, who as you probably well know, is the 2015 number 1 recruit in the state of VA. Fact of the matter is that A LOT of private Christian schools recruit kids from public schools and offer "academic scholarships." The myth that Christian schools have relatively uncompetitive basketball programs is usually in fact just that: a myth.

Another two local examples are DeMatha and Paul VI in the DC area. Both are regularly producing 2-3 Division I scholarship players every year because they can recruit as a high school. It actually is a sore subject with quite alot of the northern Virginia high school coaches because they begin to envision glory with a kid that comes up in their freshmen and JV team thats obviously a superstar, only to have them stolen away for the Junior and Senior years by some of the Catholic schools and Basketball academies, meaning the high school coach that had visions of state title runs is left holding the bag quite often.
Its also amazing when parents want their kid to play for a certain coach at a public school that they are willing to move them into the district of the school or find a work around that the kid is registered under an address in the district of the school. It happens all the time in Loudoun County these days, more so in football and actually some of girls softball and soccer programs than basketball.

Is Gonzaga high school in DC still on that list? I remember when I was growing up in NOVA about 10 years ago that the Gonzaga kids were insufferable, but always fielded good teams. Kinda like the high school version of Patriots or Yankees fans.

I can tell you from working two blocks away from Gonzaga and always getting stuck on the Metro with them that the kids there are still insufferable. My granddad (Gonzaga '44) would roll over in his grave if he knew how turrible they are.

Gonzaga and DeMatha regularly are the finals game for the WCAC Championship every year in both football and basketball.
If you look at the current Washington Post All Met Top 20 Boys Teams right now, Christian schools represent the first seven spots, and ten of the top 20. I almost wish they would do a public school ranking separate of the private religious schools because they really are different levels of play.

I think the recruiting could go even into some of the public schools. I remember one of the Woodsons...somewhere in Fairfax County...had a planetarium so kids could transfer there in order to take some sort of class that required one. They stacked their soccer team during my senior year.
Of course, at Jefferson, we had a planetarium, too, but our academic standards didn't allow anyone to transfer in [pops collar, tips fedora, talks about how great JoePa was, or does whatever else people do when they act all high-and-mighty about their academic standards]

This is a great point. however, when I was coming up in Charlottesville, STAB was the only private Christian school that produced even halfway decent sports teams (ridiculous lacrosse, but that's what you get with a bunch of rich potheads all going to the same school). Most of the teams on their schedule were fairly worthless. So yeah, there are a lot of really good schools sports wise that are private Christian schools, but not most of the ones STAB plays...

Not sure if they play them or not, but Norfolk Christian used to be really good at basketball as well. James Michael McAdoo went to school there. And as someone else pointed out, the team they're playing in the video is Collegiate (Richmond, VA), which is Russell Wilson's alma mater. I attended a private Christian school from K-5 to senior year, so I have just grown to defend my upbringing ahaha. And when I was there, we played some legit teams when they were stacked with talent, i.e. Benedictine when they had Jalen Hudson and the Steward School when they had Adjehi Baru (College of Charleston). Long story short, it just drives me crazy when people assume that all Christian schools are trash at basketball because that's simply not true. Don't get confused, there are some pretty pathetic Christian schools in the area, but there are plenty that are competitive year after year.

Leg up for that excellent point. My thought was on HS games themselves, and not AAU. You don't see quite the disparity in AAU that you often do in HS.
