It would be a bit of an understatement to say that Houshun Gaines' recruitment process hasn't exactly been a normal one.
The senior defensive end out of Rocky Mount, N.C.'s Nash Central HS has been the target of national media attention in recent weeks, all because he seemed to be at the center of some sort of "catfishing" plot by an overzealous fan.
The situation is certainly a bizarre one. On October 3, Gaines announced during a press conference that he'd be committing to Florida, one of several schools interested in him along with Virginia Tech.
But by October 5, he'd withdrawn his commitment, as rumors swirled that a fan posing as an assistant coach for the Gators had fooled Gaines into thinking Florida was interested.
While that likely makes for the better story, the truth is a little more complicated.
It would seem that someone did pretend to be speaking for Florida when they weren't, but that's not the reason Gaines isn't a Gator right now.
"He received an offer from Florida, he went to campus and he loved it," said Kevin Crudup, Gaines' coach at Nash Central. "He was struggling between Florida and Virginia Tech, right up until the last minute."
Crudup downplayed the role of the "catfishing" in the whole incident. Instead, it was a question of scholarship technicalities.
"He committed to Florida, but they told him they couldn't accept his commitment," Crudup said. "It was a numbers thing, based on what they had at the time."
It would seem that Gaines' scholarship offer was conditional, dependent on whether or not the Gators had space for him by the time he made his commitment.
Gaines did talk to someone posing as Florida's director of player personnel, Drew Hughes, and when he told that person he was ready to commit, they didn't mention anything about the limits on his scholarship.
So he went ahead with his decision, and the story grew larger.
"I can't speak to who he was talking to online, but it does seem like some people are putting their own spin on things," Crudup said.
Despite this mix up, it would seem that the Gators are still an option for Gaines.
"When I talked to them after, they just said they wanted to evaluate me further," Gaines said.
All this controversy could open up room for the Hokies to make up ground in his recruitment.
"After all this with Florida, Coach (Charley) Wiles called and said he's not wavering, he's still 100 percent committed to the offer he made him," Crudup said. "He's shown a lot of love, I think it's very impressive for him to show this level of commitment in the wake of all this."
Gaines agrees that he's kept talking with the Hokies even after he picked Florida over Tech.
"I just talked with Coach Wiles, we're definitely still on good terms," Gaines said.
The defensive line coach seems to have made a particularly large impression on Gaines.
"He loves Coach Wiles, that's what's made the decision so tough for him initially," Crudup said. "He invested so much time and energy in his recruiting, he didn't want to let him down."
Wiles has been after the senior DE ever since Crudup first gave him the heads up about Gaines.
"I knew Coach Wiles from some previous recruiting trips, so I sent him Houshun's film a few months ago," Crudup said. "Once I did, he called me right back and said he really liked him, and then came down a couple times to see him."
For Gaines, the interest from Tech was very welcome.
"Tech has always been one of his favorites," Crudup said. "Back at the start of his recruitment, I asked him his ideal top five schools, and he put Tech in there, before they even knew about him."
Now that Wiles has gotten to know Gaines, a 3-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite rating, he seems to think he could add some important depth at defensive end for the Hokies.
At 6'4" and 220 pounds, Gaines has the frame and athleticism to play either DE or OLB, and many schools have floated the possibility of playing him in the linebacking corps.
"Some schools are definitely interested in him as a 3-4 backer, others just want him with his hand on the ground going to get the quarterback," Crudup said. "With offenses going no huddle, and spreading you, a lot of schools want a guy like him, that can play defensive end or outside linebacker, that's tall and long, can run sideline to sideline."
Crudup points out that Gaines has been selected to the roster of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, the game pitting top North Carolina prospects against those from South Carolina, as a linebacker, but Wiles has other plans for him.
"He really likes my pass rush, he definitely thinks I'm better with my hand on the ground," Gaines said.
Now, Wiles will get a chance to make his case to Gaines in person when he stops by Blacksburg for the Boston College game on November 1.
"I'll be taking a visit then, but it won't be official or anything, just staying the weekend," Gaines said. "I want to get a feel for the environment, the vibe of it, talk to some of the players."
Gaines last visited Tech back in April, and Crudup thinks it's good that he's getting back up to the campus after all he's been through recently.
"Coach Wiles told him to come up and see how they do it on game day, and guaranteed him he'd love it, and I agree that it's a good idea," Crudup said. "Florida was the last place he's been so it'll be good for him to go back there."
With the Hokies surely seeming like an appealing option after the Gators demurred from accepting his commitment, this visit will likely be a very influential one for Gaines.
"I think he wants reassurance that this would be the place for him," Crudup said.

This right here is why I love our coaching staff so much. I understand the realities of scholarships and numbers, but this tells me that if you get an offer from VT, you have an offer from VT, end of story. Our coaches know what they're doing and they have a feel for proper management of their offers and their numbers. I get the sense that a lot of schools over-offer and wind up leaving kids stuck in limbo.
Good luck to Houshun in the next steps of his recruitment.
Ditto.
Didn't we say as much in the other thread?
It's Coach Wiles doing the reaching out-but if Wiles thinks he would be a player at VT, then sign him up.
He looks a lot like DeAndre Jordan. Not relevant to anything posted above, but just thought I'd share my 2 cents
I'm willing to bet he can shoot free throws a lot better than DeAndre Jordan.
And hopefully better than Augie Conte as well. I went to a small Christian high school in Richmond and Blessed Sacrament was in our conference. Augie was on the team strictly for his size because he bricked like 3 layups and I believe air balled one free throw. He was not fun to box out however
If he is the type of affaleete that the film shows, I wouldn't mind seeing him at OLB. With his size at 6'4", that could prove to be a challenge for a QB to have to throw over- it would completely change the angle and speed of passes where he is defending.
He needs better dentures.
My wife the Dentist, tells me she thinks the list is mostly dentures or tooth structure and a new, properly fitted set would work better.
I'd think ESPN would have insisted by now unless that's the Schlick he's got for EsPN.
I believe you meant Lithp
What sadist came up with the idea that the word "lisp" should have an "s" in it?
(sorry, I don't know the attribution)
You are quite welcome.
But, it's not about the pain....
Coach Wiles is a better man than me.
If I had seen a kid I was actively recruiting in person even the day before his commitment commit to a school where he had only been in contact with via text and Twitter, I'd have a very difficult time wanting to continue recruiting him. Glad we have Wiles on staff, that's all I'll say.
He had personal contact as well.
Well, it doesn't seem to me Coach Wiles was not wavering purely based on sentimentality. He clearly sees a guy who could have a unique place in our system and could, perhaps, one day be a big contributor. This is still partially just another opportunity to get that player.
That having been said, if this kid doesn't wanna play here because it just isn't the right fit, trust me I get that. Hell, if I had visited Tech for the first time in November, I'm honestly not entirely sure I would've enrolled. I honestly don't think his visit for the BC game is going to change that perception in his mind. If he doesn't see himself being happy here, he shouldn't accept the offer.
I agree if he doesn't see himself being happy he shouldn't commit to us but I think when he sees the atmosphere and meets with the players and hear's their thoughts on Blacksburg it may change how he sees the situation
Meh, he obviously just really wanted to go to Florida. Nothing wrong with that. Coaching contact aside, I'm sure he had other reasons for making the decision he did. I'm sure it was/is nothing personal against Wiles or the VT coaches and program in general. I feel bad for him. This is already embarrassing enough. It would be way worse if other schools started to back off because of him being misled and the victim of what is starting to become a common occurrence.
Wiles is a classy coach and recruiter. He is not giving up on this young man after being deceived by FU fans. Glad that Gaines is coming back to VT for a visit. Hopefully he learns more about the school and the coaching staff. Good luck to Gaines on his recruiting.
Florida really phucked up. Gaines really seems like a high character kind of guy that will be more than just a player, but a leader. I really hope he chooses VT to play for because I know I would enjoy watching him play.
The Hokies will see many Gaines on the football field if he commits to us.
Uhh, I'm not sure if we'd want to see that...
ugh, nevermind....
Don't worry, I got the pun
VT_DBU got the pun too...we don't want to see the other team gain yards while he's on the field...that's the joke..
I would like to see us make gains on the field though. Progress... gains.... ah whatever
we all understand what he was trying to say..I'm not taking away from the pun..but VT_DBU made a joke...we would like to see Gaines in O&M..we would like to see progress on both sides of the ball...but...jokes are fun too
For the GAINES! #teamgetswole
leg
Legs for daaaaaayyyzz
Thinking about the potential Gaines could almost give you a Fullwood...
And this happens the year after the completed six years of our Wang package. Oh, we are stiff competition here at VT!
Gotta wonder how much the fact that UF is in GAINESville weighed into his original decision?
I feel like after all of the drama and stuff this kid has been through the past few weeks he might come in to whichever program he decides on with a pretty big chip on his shoulder.
I bet if he came here and we played UF he might play a little mad.
As long as he doesn't play "angry"

What does "unnecessary roughness" even mean, anyway?
I have no problem if our DL plays angry. If we had hulk smashed Matty Ice and rattled him more, we would see that game differently.
Sore subject but just sayin...
(I do not advocate or celebrate the injury of opposing players)
Now, I'm not saying I do, but if Arizona and Baltimore were to simultaneously have their starting QBs injured, I'd be more happy than sad.
I think he has a official visit to UNC this weekend. If he gets past that , then I see VT being the team to beat . With VT taking the lead on Dalton , UNC might be looking for Gaines to fill that spot on their Recruits for DE . Recruiting is a War and these young kids are the prize...
Welcome to Hokie Nation, Gaines!
Just committed
