I'm sure
this might get brought up during the first practice in pads.
On the downside, he'll miss spring practice. On the upside, he'll be a Hokie.
Sucks that he won't be here for the spring
Seems like there's a decent chance he could have been in the mix to play right away if he were here in the spring and it would allow Edmunds to move to LB.
I think he plays right away. Too much of a stud, and had a year prep already...we will need him.
bravo
Well played, Drew
Welcome (back) Drew!
#BEATBAMA
This.
Is awesome. And hilarious.
And Drew also gave us a good reason to watch some SUPA HOT FIRE!!
I believe you mean Tremendous Repeat. That's who we oughtta be watching.
ha I think it's hilarious cant wait to see him in maroon and orange
I think I like this kid!
I don't. Didn't qualify initially. He has been in prep school six months getting his grades up. Now, with all that time to cross the t's and dot the i's, there is a paperwork error at the last second? Time to grow up kid, have the paperwork in correct order, and get it to the clearinghouse as far in advance as possible. I hope this doesn't turn into Todd Nolen or LeSean McCoy all over again. I think the kid can be one hell of a player, especially if Loeffler returns to a pro-style power running game.
Lighten up French
I appreciate you, but this time I have to say lighten up. We don't know this kids story or where he came from other then what high school he went to. I was a dumb kid too once. Sometimes kids don't even know what grown up looks like. I know it took me a while to figure it out. Come on, admit it, when you read his comments you half smiled at least a little. I thought it was funny.
Give the kid a break- If you have kids in HS going to college, let alone the complexities of post grad + HS transcripts, etc., you know that it can be an absolute PITA to get the school to send the proper paperwork to the Univ. plus get it there on time. You'd think they'd be well versed in it, but it gets screwed up ALL THE TIME. We had to lean on HS admin constantly to get it right while the kids tried to help. I feel for Drew in this situation.
I don't, but Fork Union is a football factory with signficant resources and experience to assist their players with completing work for admissions and clearinghouses. Virginia Tech's athletic department support services also do everything within their power to make sure players are eligible and complete all paper work. Non-athletes do not get that level of assistance at their own school. Forgive me if I am not empathetic, but to me, it is a major red flag that he isn't taking the privilege of a football scholarship to a highly regarded academic institution and football power seriously. If find it hard to believe that the HUGE support network is at fault.
As punishment, he can have fun being 24 rocking out at AGR parties by the time his football eligibility concludes.
And don't get me wrong. I think Harris will be one hell of a tailback at Virginia Tech. I watched a new batch of film, and he demonstrated versatility catching the ball, much more explosion from "I" formation sets to go with the film we have seen of him running from the one back. He looks like a clone of Brandon Ore, but more explosive between the tackles and more power. He defintely looks like a refined product. He could easily be a 20-25 carry a game starting running back for 2-3 years.
That being said, get your paperwork in kid. We have had a ton of very talented players enroll at Virginia Tech. Some were real knuckleheads. Yet, I can't remember a time when a major recruit didn't enroll because he didn't turn in a piece of paper. I mean, he wasn't major recruit, but BRANDON ORE got his paperwork in. It isn't exactly a high threshold.
And, if this is the fault of the administrators or the clearinghouse, then they will get an absolute tirade here for screwing with a kid's life.
I mostly agree...
went to high school with Todd Nolen, saw the talent we would eventually miss out on firsthand. Wow that kid could play.
Shame he never was able to qualify... went to FUMA, then some JUCO out in Kansas.
Doesn't sound like Harris is in the same situation, sounds like he has already qualified but just won't be here in the spring because he missed some paperwork deadline.
I'd imagine this would violate some NFL rule, but could he still show up for some spring workouts, even if he isn't enrolled quite yet?
You have to roll with this one.
I wouldn't put this all on the kid. When I applied to Tech I had my mom and a guidance counselor help me out, and I don't remember doing any of the work except picking my meals and signing my name. Also, no one is perfect, I remember two kids in my class having to delay enrollment because of botched paperwork. Finally, if he was cutting it close to the deadline getting his grades in order to pass pass admissions, you really can't make the argument that he should have been more prompt, or submitted things in advance.
I think the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. He could have gone to a different school all along, but he's continuing to stick with Tech, even with this minor snafu.
Did anyone else read this as....
The paperwork error being the reason he was allowed to reopen his recruitment. I feel like he needed a reason to say he was allowed to reopen his recruitment so he could do the joke. I don't know about Tech specifically, but when I was applying to colleges last year, many of them were very understanding about mistakes in the application, often times sending emails about what mistakes were made and providing help on how to fix the errors. I feel like Tech would have done the same thing these other schools did, especially for students they're offering full ride scholarships to.
You'd be surprised
Going into my Jr. year in July, I received a call from my academic athletic advisor telling me that she had screwed up the semester before, and recommended that I take the wrong class, ultimately deeming me ineligible due to course requirements, and that I had 1 day to take a course to fulfill the requirements. Not easy to do. Actually, impossible since you can't take a course in three days.
Luckily, I somehow found a way by going to Strayer that day, paying $80 to take a Human Development exam to get 3 credits. The exam came with a 5-week module, but I didn't have time for that. So I winged it and somehow passed.
The NCAA is a cluster-you-know-what when it comes to academics, and oftentimes, so are the University Representatives that are supposed to help the students (a former advisor was an absolute 76-year-old stoner, and stories should probably stop there before ppl get in trouble), so it doesn't surprise me at all, though Football players usually get the Gold Package when it comes to support services.
seems odd
it seems odd to that someone couldn't help him out in this situation. Admissions should be able to work with him on this. At least we don't have to worry about him getting injured in spring ball. wish he had that time for chemistry and getting his groove in the backfield. I really feel like he is going to be the guy for us unless he has a slow start and Edmunds owns it.
Nasty.
That's what we're going to be. I am so stoked about the incoming recruits and players we have returning. If we can get Holland Fisher qualified, man we are going to be fun to watch. You have to love heavy hitters + hard runners. Between Edmunds and Harris on offense, Fisher/Fuller/Teller on D, what's not to get excited about over the next few years!? We are brewing up some nasty ball for the next couple of seasons. Watch out ESPN, you just may have a team outside the SEC knocking down doors.
being a student now I find that admissions/whatever can be quite incompetent sometimes so who knows, ill just be excited when he finally plays
Thomas Smith
Anyone heard any updates on this kid? I like his potential if we can get him in school.
So, what is he going to be doing between for the next 5 months between now and June?
Is he staying at FUMA? Community college? At VT but not on the team?
issues with registration
My Junior year i arrived to campus and scholarship people (and partly my fault for trusting naivety) had not filled out some forms correctly. Essentially they said I couldn't enroll that semester. However some very frantic phone calls and hustling on my part opened the doors to me. I am surprised that if it is a university thing and not Clearinghouse then there should be some wiggle room. Weaver should be busting his A$$ trying to get something worked out here IMO. It would be best for him to have that spring ball time to get the playbook and new or refined system down. Also conditioning will definitely be an issue.
would be nice if they could find some way to make this happen, but judging by the activity on this site, I'd say Weaver has his hands full at the moment...
CC at TSL tweeted that it's happened in the past to other players.
Weaver is busy, but #BEATBAMA is still the mission:
1) finish assistant hires
2) fix Drew Harris enrollment debacle in time for spring
Harris May End Up Somewhere Else
via http://www.roanoke.com/sports/college/wb/319119
Oh no
I really hope someone can get this rushed through...We desperately need him now.
My translation of this is that it is NOT a NCAA Clearinghouse issue, as has been reported, but is a Virginia Tech application issue.
If it was clearinghouse issue, why would other schools be suiting him right now? Also, it makes no sense that the NCAA clearinghouse would clear him for Summer enrollment, but not spring.
The issue, to me, appears that his VT application was not reviewed / accepted on time for spring enrollment, which is next Monday. Perhaps a transcript or test score was missing for the application or something...
It sounds like VT really screwed the pooch on this. I would not wait to start college until the summer if I were him. Hopefully someone can get this fixed today and we don't see him at Miami every year.
Has anyone else noticed that Harris looks way older than 18/19?
From what I can tell he still seems adamant about becoming a Hokie.
I already love this kid, loyalty goes a long way in my book. Hopefully, VT fixes this before it is to late.
I wrote this in another thread
I mean, I know they do, but sometimes I think they just don't even care. I feel like I could do a better job of handling this issue
bureaucrats always screw things up. happens all the time in the military.
Progress?
Matriculation Letter
Drew tweeted that the only thing keeping him from enrolling is a "matriculation letter" from Virginia Tech.
"Drew Harris™ @Hollacide
#hokienation all I need is a matriculation letter from va tech admissions everything else is fine waiting on admissions"
A matriculation letter seems like it is an extremely simple piece of admissions documentation.
BUT, with the forecast calling for 12" of snow today, campus is closed today, will probably be closed tomorrow, is closed on Monday for MLK day, and classes start on Tuesday.
Honestly, if his enrollment falls through, it would be one of the worst cluster f's i can remember.
They need to find a way to make it work, I don't care if campus is closed.
Is there any NCAA rule that says he needs a physical piece of paper that says he's a student? Almost everything to do with student status is electronic. They still send acceptance letters and whatnot, of course, but I imagine he can be enrolled and declared a full-time student completely online.
I also doubt campus will be closed tomorrow. The snow should stop reasonably early tonight and the roads should get plowed quickly, especially with so few people being here - very few cars need to be moved from being parked on streets.
I'll plow the roads myself if I have to...
I hope the VT powers at be are not over-looking the importance of this situation. For a recruit of his caliber (both out of HS & FUMA) and who has seemingly done everything he can in order to meet the expected criteria to be putting his entire college career in the hands of a few $35k/yr admissions clerks is nothing short of terrifying.
One of the major factors for our lack of production from the RBs this year was the fact that he wasn't eligible as initially planned. Let's all remember, that he and JC both were supposed to enroll LAST spring semester to get a jump-start to what was supposed to be a Double-Trouble (Carolina Panthers reference) type RB duo that would continue our tradition of an excellent running attack. But instead, we had to play Running Back roulette every week this past year.
If this slips through the cracks and we do end up losing him to (God-forbid) Miami or someone where we have to tackle instead of block for him this should be yet another rude awakening at how inept our 'commitment to a national championship' staff really is.
Bottom line...
These types of things just don't happen in Tuscaloosa.
Campus opened at 10am today. They better get their shit together
