From the second replay angle, it looked like their was a WR in the general area, although he was still a good ways away from the play. I think they gave him the benefit of the doubt that the hit by Dadi would have caused the poor-ness of the the throw.
No, it didn't, but it was close enough that they won't call that one. It landed pretty much at the Line Judge's feet.
Plus the stripes RARELY make a call against the team we play.

Well that's what it means and is one of the inevitabilities of being a Hokie fan.
I momentarily stand corrected.
While the receiver pushed off, that play highlights a lot of what our defense has struggled with this season. For the most part, our defensive backs have great difficulty running with receivers and usually end up a step behind the receiver. If the ball is delivered accurately, the DB doesn't have a chance.
When you are running Cover-1 on that short of field, it is very difficult for the safety to make it across the field to provide help over the top in time, but this problem still crops up on other plays. We tend to be very poor at bracket coverage this year, and I would suspect that it is a direct result of weakness at the safety position and some of the corner positions. While Bonner and Clark have made some great plays, they have also had some tremendous busts.
To elevate this defense from great to elite, I think we need to see some improvement across the board on the back end.

I just don't understand why you call that end around given the struggles on the offensive line. As was just demonstrated, it is very unlikely the line will hold their blocks long enough for that play to work.
I thought it was a great playcall coming off the reverse-pass from earlier. Brewer had a block set up, and Stroman would have been fine if he had just attacked the edge instead of stopping in the middle of the field.

Brewer's stones are so large that the gravitational field created by them violently pulls in any defender who tries and tackle him from behind, thus, leading to injuries for the defender.
I feel like half the sacks against us are caused by Brewer not having the awareness to just throw the ball in the dirt at someone's feet.
Edit: And his habit of running backwards instead of stepping up into the pocket doesn't help either. If you are certain you are going to get hit, just go down. Don't run backwards.
to be fair, when you're as short as brewer, stepping up into the pocket to throw results in more tipped passes/interceptions. As much as I hate sacks, I hate interceptions more. That said, if Kiel can fumble the ball forward while being pulled down by Dadi, you'd think brewer could scramble a little and throw it away instead of losing 20 yards on a sack

The rushing game continues to be somewhat successful, yet we keep calling pass plays. This would make total sense if we had an OL.
Heck of a punt there and outstanding coverage by Riley. Single biggest improvement this team has made from last year to this year: the gunners. Those two guys, Riley and Clark, have been outstanding all year long.

We haven't really been able to effectively rush, so he dropped the linebackers into zone probably hoping that Cincinnati would anticipate a blitz and try to run some quick slants behind where blitzing linebackers would have been.

We have 148 total yards and 13 points, 3 of which came from a pick in Cincy territory. While the defense has given up over 300 yards, they have held Cincy to 10 points. While neither side is playing great, the offense needs to pick it up.
Cincinnati is 101st in total defense, giving up 447.8 ypg, and 65th in scoring defense at 26.8ppg. We should be putting up better numbers.
No doubt they do, but Bud just isn't doing Bud things. This is completely different from what he's made his money doing - stop the run, be aggressive, pound the QB. We're sitting back on a sluggish 3-man rush and waiting for them to come to us. That's not how Tech has played good defense.
if there's any thing we can be sure of, it's that our D will come out after half time and play lights out for at least a quarter. Bud is the master of half time adjustments

There we go. The OL did a fantastic job on that drive getting JCC to the second level, which set up that zone read series and the PA on the goal line. If those big boys keep handling their business in the trenches, this game could be a lot of fun.

I couldn't tell if he wiffed on the block and that's why the pass rush had a free shot. But Trey did keep his eye on the ball, stand up from sitting on the ground, catch the ball, and try to move forward.
yeah they showed on the replay that he dove at the blitzer's feet, but the blitzer was able to avoid the block and had a clear shot on brewer. Agree, edmunds showed some headsup by catching that ball, but if had executed his block, Brewer has more time to throw.

I don't. We've had injury after injury after injury and had to fight through each and every single one of them. 4th string running back. 4TH STRING. We shouldn't have to feel bad for a team with injury problems. I absolutely feel bad for the guy, but definitely don't feel bad for the team.

Agree... I think he froze up a bit at the end of the first half in not calling a timeout, but it didn't really cost us.
I was screaming at my TV for the timeout but my god did we get the snap quick. Usually we lose like 8-10 seconds when we try that and there I think we lost two. I think it was a gamble to try to catch them off guard.
Gotta get that clock management under control but he definitely showed promise.

If anyone was listening to the IMG broadcast, you just heard Bud lay it out there for folks who question where his loyalty lies. When asked about beamer and this week I think, Im not for certain, he broke down. For all who think this is a right or a given that we deserve better, I think you have already disrespected and forgotten the glue that holds this together. this team went through something we did not see, nor could imagine. that interview let me know to shut up and let these guys drive. Something special is already here and W-L won't readily show just how special this team is. Just my two cents.
Hearing Bud break down like that made me wonder if something more is going on with Frank. It is also was a reminder of how much Frank means to the coaches and players. It also made me want to tell all the spoiled fans who want to get rid of Frank to go eff themselves. That may not be popular but that is how I feel.
Yea couldn't help but wonder the same. Sounds like at the very least the perspective of life without CFB at least crossed the minds of everyone behind the scenes. The way Bill and Mike kind of switched the scenery could have been a way to change the subject of something touchy. It was an emotional time right there. I am proud of everyone even more now though.
The halftime guys were talking about trick plays, and one of them said something like (paraphrasing): "When you're coaching your last bowl game, you kind of let it all hang out."
I know that's not what they meant, but I sat up straighter when I heard it.
I think they're just saying it's the last game of the year and it's a bowl game, not necessarily anything about VT specifically. And they're right, that's one of the best things about bowl season - trick plays and coaches who seem like they just kinda say, "eff it, see if that'll work."

I was thinking of the OB trophy during tonight's Military Bowl trophy celebration, as I was thinking "that's it?" Presentation seemed kind of abrupt and empty (outside JCC & CSB's speeches, of course).
