Well if this is true (and that's a big IF) then let's pray Jeff Driskel announces he's transferring to Duke before "The OSU who lost to VT" is out of the playoffs...

Though I'm definitely not the only one saying this, but why would he not try to transfer to Oregon? Duke is turning into a team to be reckoned with and I have nothing but respect for Coach Cutcliffe and his staff, but Oregon seems like the perfect fit for a guy with Miller's game. I don't know all the ins and outs of transferring to another D-1 school or anything, but Oregon would seemingly make more sense to me than Duke. Maybe Braxton thinks the Dukies have no real shot at ever facing OSU next year where Oregon could in the playoff, but I believe the Ducks would be the clear favorite to win it all next year if he went to Eugene.

I think it is soon going to be Mari-adios-ta. Provided Oregon beats Florida State, which I think they should, he should have a solid chance at bringing the trophy back to Eugene. Even if they don't, I think he leaves. Go be the #1 pick and play for the Bucs. What more does he have to achieve in his collegiate career except for an injury?

Injury prone, and probably not the same player, and what good is a qb who can only play for 1 year if we had to start over I'd want someone who could learn and grow in the system, 1 and done is just putting yourself in a bad position at the most important spot the following season and be it him or a freshman, a new team means a new playbook and new players to develop chemistry with.
Having said that I know he wants to play, go to the NFL, and do his thing, best of wishes to him, but it seems like a team taking him given his injury history is a risk even if he is a beast.

I don't recall him having any season ending injuries, just a knee sprain, big difference between that and a rotator cuff injury. I hope he is educated enough to know that!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
He should have said"what good is a QB who MIGHT only be able to play QB one year". Miller had the entire offseason to recover from his previous surgery and lasted one live practice. There is NO guarantee whatsoever that he will be capable of playing QB going forward.
Miller was a marginal NFL prospect at QB when he was healthy. IMO, if Miller is smart, he looks at playing RB -- either at OSU or elsewhere.

If that wing of his breaks just throwing the ball a few times, it's not going to last any better as a RB getting hit just about every single time he touches the ball.
I hope for his sake he just tried to come back too early, and he comes back 100% wherever he plays.

There's a big difference with a torn labrum between a throwing motion and getting tackled on it. It largely impacts the overhead arm motion...not a typical RB movement, even while being tackled. Lots of non-QBs return from it...
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Pretty sure Russell Wilson left due to disagreements with the coaches about him playing baseball as well. I know they always talked about that when he was at State. I don't recall Wilson having any injuries.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I would certainly hope so, though I highly doubt that deal falls through. I think there's a better chance Braxton changes positions and stays at OSU than us getting him, but that's just my opinion.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I've also seen rumors of him going to Oklahoma, Texas, FSU, Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, Arkansas, and LSU, so... We'll see, I guess. I suppose it is possible.

this has some substance.... when i was up in durham for the dook game went to diner with one of my friends that plays for duke and he told me that they were talking to braxton then. maybe braxton gets the nod back in OSU now though with barrett being out with the broken ankle. plus also heard over the weekend that jeff driskell is condsidering transfering to dook. that would be 3 starting QBs in the ACC that were all from UF.

I mean it would be a good pickup for Duke but not sure it would move the Coastal needle too much. I read they are losing something like 10 starters this year due to attrition, so they are going to be a lot further away from where they are than just simply bringing in a decent QB (especially one who wasn't exactly known for how well he throws the ball)

3 OL & their RB return. Biggest losses on O are in WR where they lose Crowder & Blakeney. They also lose 3/4 of their DL starters & 1/2 of their 2nd string.

They also lose 3/4 of their DL starters & 1/2 of their 2nd string.
That alone could be enough to keep them out of the race next year. Simply put, they will struggle to stop the run in a division and conference that butters its bread by pounding the rock.

I think it would be a good move for Braxton and Duke but it doesn't worry me a whole lot. He made his name running at tOSU in their run heavy offense. At Duke, he would be asked to make accurate throws to guys not named Devin Smith running past the safeties and I don't think that is the type of QB he is.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That was my first thought. Above, someone asked why he wouldn't go to Oregon. Oregon's offense doesn't help QBs translate their game to the NFL. Miller will always have the running/scrambling ability, maybe he wants to go to Duke because their offense will help him when it comes time for him to go to the NFL.

Not trying to drill the guy or anything and since I was the one who said the Oregon thing I'm just gonna put this out there: if Troy Smith couldn't keep a job in the NFL, I doubt Miller could either. The Russell Wilson points were legit and all the credit in the world to him for sticking with it, but I don't know if there's another QB as smart as Wilson is. The fact that he hasn't suffered any real injuries in his NFL career speaks volumes about how smart he is when carrying the football, and Miller just doesn't seem to be that kind of guy. Miller is injury prone and decent in the pocket, at best. If he were smart, he'd change positions immediately, stay at OSU, and try the NFL as a poor man's Percy Harvin-type. But if his mind is set on QB, Oregon would make the most sense to me.

I understand that JT had a great year this year, but I would think that Braxton would wait to see how long JT is going to be out with his broken ankle (that he got late in the year) before deciding to leave. JT may not be able to go at the start of the season. Remember how long it took Trey to get back to 100%? I know they're different injuries, but from the outside looking in I would think that an ankle would be worse and take more to recover from than a leg. If it happens, it happens, I'm just not ready to believe this one quite yet.

Not trying to turn this into an OSU discussion board or anything here, but what do you do if you're Meyer and Jones wins out? Talk about a tough decision. And call me crazy, but at this point I'm actually picking them to win it all.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
(Seriously though, I think the playoffs have the potential to be very interesting but can't see OSU winning. They really struggled against Penn St and Minnesota and couldn't put away bad Indiana and Michigan teams until the 4th quarter)
As for your question, Meyer has used 2 QB systems before so it's not impossible, but I'd suspect he gives Jones the first crack at the job if he stays healthy with Barrett and Miller coming back from injury. It's a tough decision that most coaches wouldn't mind having though.

Every off season has been longer than the one previous it seems. Conjecture is so much fun but not nearly as fun as tailgating and watching Tech play. God it's going to take forever for next fall to arrive...
Back on topic, I don't really care what he does. Good luck to him. To be the best you always want to play and beat the best. Him being there makes Duke better and that is a good thing for the ACC and for us.

Cutcliff is truly a special coach. What he has done at Dook with their lack of talent is extremely impressive. He is going to be lifting a national championship trophy with a different school one day.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Russell was a much more accomplished passer than Miller. Miller has poor accuracy on the deep ball which limits his potential at the next level. Excellent runner but limited passer. In contrast, Wilson has always had a great pocket presence and been a "throw first" QB with running as a last resort.

Watching the Notre Dame-LSU game and Malik Zaire got the start at QB for the Fighting Irish. During the broadcast the announcers were talking about the "free agent market" out there for Everett Golson...
Now I don't know how others feel about Golson, but I actually like the kid. He's not a Cam Newton who is going to go out there and win the National Championship practically single handed. But he has shown before that he can lead a team when he needs to.
I'll admit he has had a down year. But could Blacksburg be a landing spot for him? Would you guys like to have him come to Blacksburg? How would he mesh with Loeffler's offense? I know we recruited him hard out of Myrtle Beach when he was in high school and I was disappointed he went to ND.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Graduate transfer rules are pretty open. In normal cases, only conference rules apply to limit transfers to other conference schools, but since ND has no conference, there may be no hurdle at all...

Tome Golson hasn't really sown he can play when the lights come on and handle the pressure. I like how we are positioned right now and feel like Brewer can really help himself whitan offseason to be in top shape. If he pulls the ball down and runs 5-6 times a game like he did at OSU I think it will help keep the chains moving.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Golson was 18-2 as a starting QB before November, with one loss to the National Champion and the other to the defending National Champions. He had a terrible November, but he seemed to almost always find a way to win when his confidence was high. Actually I think he's similar to Jameis in that if FSU ever lost, I suspect they would have a good chance of dropping a few more. Hasn't seemed to happen yet in that case though.

If this has legs,
That would be an interesting twist. Would make Duke a very tough out.
Wow. That would be an epic get for Duke.
While I don't necessarily want Duke to get better, I'm all for Braxton doing what's best for him. And if that's Duke, I welcome the competition.
It'll be like beating Ohio State 3 times in 2 years.
Oh fuck.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Well if this is true (and that's a big IF) then let's pray Jeff Driskel announces he's transferring to Duke before "The OSU who lost to VT" is out of the playoffs...

Well Oregon probably has a QB or two that they were grooming behind Mariota and Duke doesnt have the talent and depth at QB that Oregon does
I've heard he's considering Oregon.
I heard he's considering YOUR MOM!
Sorry, sorry, I'll show myself out.
Are we talking about Bud Foster again?
Oh, no, Miller. Nah, no Oregon, Mariota is what, a sophomore? And Miller only has a year left? Nah.
Mariota is a redshirt Junior, I believe, with talk of him going for the NFL draft.
I see. Well then I stand corrected, looks like Oregon may be available. Could be dangerous with Miller at the helm
I think it is soon going to be Mari-adios-ta. Provided Oregon beats Florida State, which I think they should, he should have a solid chance at bringing the trophy back to Eugene. Russell Wilson would like to speak with you.
I don't recall him having any season ending injuries, just a knee sprain, big difference between that and a rotator cuff injury. I hope he is educated enough to know that!
You said "what good is a QB who can only play one year"
Yeah, one year is pointless if you ask me. Might as well get a freshman playing and have someone for the future as well.
As someone above mentioned Russell Wilson, I would like to add Cam Newton.
He should have said"what good is a QB who MIGHT only be able to play QB one year". Miller had the entire offseason to recover from his previous surgery and lasted one live practice. There is NO guarantee whatsoever that he will be capable of playing QB going forward.

A risk? Whats the risk?
I think the Hokies would take him in a heartbeat...
I would certainly hope so, though I highly doubt that deal falls through. I think there's a better chance Braxton changes positions and stays at OSU than us getting him, but that's just my opinion.
I've also seen rumors of him going to Oklahoma, Texas, FSU, Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, Arkansas, and LSU, so... We'll see, I guess. I suppose it is possible.
A graduate degree from Duke is a great NFL backup plan. And wildturkey84, you handled this topic beautifully.
This would be a huge get for Duke, a great move for Braxton, and a problem on next year's schedule
this has some substance.... when i was up in durham for the dook game went to diner with one of my friends that plays for duke and he told me that they were talking to braxton then. maybe braxton gets the nod back in OSU now though with barrett being out with the broken ankle. plus also heard over the weekend that jeff driskell is condsidering transfering to dook. that would be 3 starting QBs in the ACC that were all from UF.

Yep, if they don't get Miller I think they struggle to make a bowl. They do get there All-ACC LB and TE back from injury though.

I don't see why everybody is worried. Foster can more than handle him.

Great point on "smarts". They are grossly under rated when projecting a college qb, to the NFL.
Driskel starts at QB, Braxton is the RB. There, now both of them can start!
I understand that JT had a great year this year, but I would think that Braxton would wait to see how long JT is going to be out with his broken ankle (that he got late in the year) before deciding to leave. It's not just JT at this point. Cardale Jones has a huge chance to continue making his own statement against Alabama.
Not trying to turn this into an OSU discussion board or anything here, but what do you do if you're Meyer and Jones wins out? Talk about a tough decision. And call me crazy, but at this point I'm actually picking them to win it all.

As much as I'd like a star QB to run the offense, I don't want us to be a revolving door. 4 QBs in 4 years is not a smart plan, I don't think.
I think using a scholarship on Golston would be a terrible idea. Thankfully it is also almost certainly not going to happen.
Yeah I wouldn't invest in turnovers either.
Isn't Golson a senior?
Yes, but he redshirted during his freshman year in 2011. Still has one year of eligibility to play.
Something must have changed at ND. 10 yrs ago, they didn't RS a player unless there were very unusual circumstances.
Now it looks like he would go to FSU, mutual interest on both sides. If so who thinks we see attrition from Deondre Francois or Kai Locksley?
Would there be attrition because of someone that is only going to be one-and-done at a school?
I wonder if ND could block him from going there
Graduate transfer rules are pretty open. In normal cases, only conference rules apply to limit transfers to other conference schools, but since ND has no conference, there may be no hurdle at all...
