The Virginia Tech coaching staff is desperately trying to get 2016 athlete Grant Holloway of Chesapeake, Va.'s Grassfield HS on campus next month, even though they're still not sure where he might fit on the football field.
Holloway doubles as a track star at Grassfield, and it would seem that recruiting coordinator Bryan Stinespring has been sufficiently impressed with his athleticism that he wants to get a closer look at him.
"They're just looking at me as an athlete, saying I can play wherever on the field that's comfortable," Holloway said. "And they're trying to get me up there for a Junior Day in February."
Stinespring's had an eye on Holloway since the spring, and the Hokies were his very first offer back in March. Since then, the staff has taken a keen interest in Holloway for his potential as either a defensive back or a wide receiver.
"Coach Stinespring was the one that originally sent the offer to me," Holloway said. "Since then, I've been up for a game, and at a camp over the summer. (Stinespring) took me around for a kind of unofficial visit of all the football buildings when the camp was done."
Holloway's head coach even says the interest in Holloway, who's rated a 3-star recruit by 247Sports, goes beyond just Stinespring.
"Coach Beamer was even going to come down and visit to see him, before we had that crazy snow back in November," said Martin Asprey, Grassfield's head coach. "It's just been an unbelievable recruitment for him. They really like the young man."
Asprey completely understands the Hokies' enthusiasm based on his experience with Holloway.
"He had a high jump over seven feet, 7'1" to be exact," Asprey said. "He's that good of an athlete."
When Holloway joined the team as a sophomore, Asprey thought that explosiveness would best translate to the secondary. The Grizzlies boasted a pair of eventual college-bound players at receiver, so Holloway played on defense for his first year.
"At first, we had two players at wide receiver that would eventually go to ODU," Asprey said. "So he started in the secondary his sophomore year. But he transformed himself into a two way player that offseason."
Now Holloway starts at both wide receiver and defensive back, presenting a tantalizing challenge for the Hokies to sort out.
But Asprey says he isn't in a hurry to offer any suggestions to Stinespring and company about how to deploy him.
"My feeling is you buy a car, who am I to tell you how to drive it?" Asprey said. "I just tell all my players, when you're going to a school, you've got to do whatever's best for them. And you've got to have the professionalism to listen to these guys that have been doing this for 20 years or so."
Even still, it remains unclear where the Hokies might prefer to use Holloway. At 6'3", his size would be excellent for either position, especially when combined with his elite speed.
"I'm a track guy, so they know I know speed," Holloway said. "But I'm still working on my footwork. If I get that down, I'll be in really good shape."
Asprey notes that Holloway is also still working on finding a balance between the demands of track and improving the finer points of his game heading into his senior year.
"He's always working on balancing stuff because he's a year-round athlete," Asprey said. "But he keeps close to 3.0, he definitely knows time management."
Holloway will have to also spend more time working to manage his recruitment as the interest in him intensifies. He says he's also fielding interest from UVA, Tennessee, Clemson and ODU, all of whom have offered.
But given Tech's status as the first school to show interest in Holloway, it sure seems as if he'll also be giving the Hokies a fair shot.
"They were my first offer, and I was just kind of shocked," Holloway said. "I was definitely grateful."

If he is 6' 3" and has great speed shouldn't he be a wide receiver for us? I mean our safetys don't need great end speed and 6'3" would make him likely too tall for a corner
Also 247 article said he ran a 4.26 40 at Tennessee's camp last summer. Even if that time is a little off, wow
Yeah, if he was recruited as ATH on NCAA14, I'd put that sucker right in the WR pool. Though, a safety that fast or a corner that tall could be interesting.
He is 16 or 17 years old and still has his senior year of high school left, right? He might be even taller when it is all said and done.
Sounds like a fantastic TE. Bucky's heir apparent?
You misspelled QB.
Damn autocorrect.
So true. You never know when you will end up in a kinky pool getting fully dipped in dork magic while someone tries to deny your pussy touchdown.
Just another day at TKP...
WHY CAN'T WE KEEP THESE THREADS ON TOPIC? Terrible moderator, IMO.

Wait, this is off topic?
Keep in mind, big corners are en vogue right now in the NFL. Ultimately if Holloway's position will come down to hip flexibility and short burst quickness. If he can turn and run with receivers he will be a corner. If he is a long strider and has a tougher time changing direction, he will be a wide receiver. Without seeing his tape, it is tough to tell, but if he can cover he will go to D first ( see Facyson.) The corner position is at a premium in Foster's mind right now.
I think you are off on the safeties not needing speed comment. The safety position has to cover the most ground of any position. They have to be able to drop back and make sure nobody gets behind them once they recognize pass and they have to be able to cover the 10-15 yards or more when they see run. The faster a safety can close that space, the better. Exceptional safeties are able to read the play immediately and start moving into a position to help the defense.
The coach used a car analogy when discussing the recruiting process.
petebuddywilson you have a call on line two.
I got dreams. Visions. Maybe delusions.

When it comes to the Hokies. It's what I do.
Andre was awesome. Legs. We need another big play guy.
I loved those and the all maroon versions of those uniforms. So simple, yet so smooth.
Also why I loved the uni's around 05-08 really smooth with fine striping for a subtle accent. The really blockish uniforms in the LT era can just disappear.
VS
I completely agree those other uniforms were great...I miss those looks.
Yeah, but Xavier looks good in anything...
But especially good in a defense's backfield!
I know I'm weird, but I like the shoulder stripes.
All maroon MV1 era will always be the best, though.
I vote stripes. Timeless.
The '05-'08 unis look so...'05-'08.
I love how the Hokies are always the first to offer these kids. Just reinforces my confidence in the talent evaluation skills that Beamer and Co. have shown since the mid 90's.
Agreed, and thats why the last few kids we add to this class will be important. We seem to often be the first to offer kids and then they get big offers and go elsewhere.
But in the last month of recruiting, we will hand out 3-5 offers of kids who we have had on our radar and may already be committed to a lower tier school. The one or two kids that we end up with on late offers are usually good players that had good senior years and it's too late in the process for FSU to steal them.
I was an assistant coach there a few years ago. He's a great kid, and they have an assistant still on staff that was a former walk-on DB at Tech in the early '80s.
mostly off topic, but every time I load the main page and see that picture out of the corner of my eye, I see spiderman
Very tall corner with speed for days = Jimmy Williams.
Sure, why not.
