Horns247 has been told that Texas head coach Charlie Strong has interest in Shane Beamer for the Longhorns special teams/tight ends assistant job. Beamer is currently the running backs/assistant head coach for his father Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech.
Beamer joins former Houston head coach Tony Levine and former USC special teams coach John Baxter as the leading candidates for Texas' opening.
In the past, Beamer coordinated special teams for two seasons at South Carolina. His father is also widely considered one of the best special teams minds in the country.
Let the "Beamerball" debate begin.

I know it's Texas but seems like a step down to me, or at least a lateral move. If I was Shane I would be looking at HC gigs at smaller D1 schools to cut my teeth.
Agreed, I would be surprised if he would go there.
I dont think he'll take it but I certainly dont think its step down, only because it Texas
Sounds like a plan for us to extend our recruiting to Texas while Shane secretly still works for the good guys.
This is similar to Texas A&M having interest in Bud Foster in that we don't know if the interest is mutual.
I'd be shocked if Shane did not coach alongside his dad for as long as VT will have him.
But... but...
ZOMFG look at flight tracker blahhh
The Roanoke Tower must have spent their downtime at TOTs.
mmmm rails
Can't imagine him leaving for the same job at another school.
Frank's been the Head Coach at VT since Shane was 10, I think the only way he leaves (as mentioned above) is for a HC job somewhere else with the ultimate goal of returning to take over in Blacksburg.
The article states that Strong has an interest but gives no indication of Shane reciprocating the interest.
Are you saying that Charlie has a. . .Strong interest?
I find it hilarious that you gif'd your own post with this. so good. leg, obviously.
That's confidence!
Shane's prep for the bowl game and his interview with USA Today this week has his stock trending up in my opinion. His relationship to our program is awkward, like we knew it would be, and adds unneeded stress to the Frank Beamer transition situation. But I'd like to keep him.
HIs stock is definitely trending up, but the reason for that is not the interview, or the bowl game prep.
It was definitely the Greg Stroman piggy back ride.
Or this.
Leg....i really don't know why but this might be my all time favorite gif! lol... and the "Pew Pew Pew" is PERFECT! lol
I'm sure Texas has interest.
I'm also sure that Shane has absolutely no desire to give up a job where he's working every day with his dad in what is likely to be the closing years of a legendary career, rebuilding his Alma Mater into a program that looks to have the momentum to get back to very good football in the next couple years.
247 is little bit better than SB nation so this is probably legit:
"Virginia Tech running backs / assistant head coach Shane Beamer is a candidate for the Texas tight ends / special teams job, according to 247Sports."
I feel like he is pretty much running the special teams here already or has his hands in it. I think a specials coordinator experience is a good position to go into head coaching because it gives you experience in decision-making, having a hand in both offensive and defensive sides of the ball. But I do feel like this is a lateral move for Shane.
Any Chance Stiney goes to UVA to be the offensive line coach:
http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=List-Open-assistant-coaching-jobs-in...
Why would he do that? Its not likely that London has more than a year left at VA. There is a good argument for whoever our next HC is to retain Stiney the way Frank retained Hite when he got here.
If he had any interest in leaving he would've left when his position changed. Stiney is here to stay.
That would be a big loss. Stiney is finally where be belongs, as recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, and he is excellent in both capacities. Whit should do what he can to keep Stiney in his current role for as long as possible.
A rumor about a VT coach going to a Texas school to coach. IT MUST BE LEGIT, anyone who says otherwise*Andy* is just driving traffic to their blog.
Clearly Charlie Strong needs to rewatch the Bama game from last year.
But if I were Shane and they approached me with a Texas sized check, I'd buy a Stetson and boots and start buying Burnt Orange boxers. What would he be losing out on?
Coaching with his Dad for the last few years of his career.
Having his kid's grandparents close to home.
Depending on the raise, he can buy a lot of plane tickets.
Plane tickets don't do much when grandpa is a DI head coach and can't take many days off.
The job opening is not for a position as a Hooters girl.
I just HAD to turn this green. LOL!
Let's look at this from a more personal angle. Shane's in a comfortable job, working with his dad, at his alma mater. His dad is in the last stages of his career, and his health cannot be said to be 100%. Shane is married, and has two young daughters and a son to consider as well. Being the offspring of a loyal, family-oriented guy like Frank Beamer, does anyone really think there's a snowball's chance in hell that, when considering these factors, Shane leaves Blacksburg for anything less than a definitive promotion? I just don't see that happening.
Shane: "Hey dad, goin' to Texas"
Frank: "Ok, come back when you want to see your wife and my grandkids"
Shane: "Wha..."
and, he won't get high profile opportunities for mic time/to play head coach at Texas. For a guy who wants an opportunity to be a head coach, Texas represents a dead in because that program lives and dies based on Strong.
Yes, Whit saying "Hey Beamers, it's really awkward you both work here."
As long as Shane is good, this arrangement is fine. But when the RBs stink and we strike out recruiting Richmond, it's a Jeff Bowden situation.
Was up in Richmond this weekend and talked with some people who knew DeBerry's family. Said VT was never really in it for whatever reason, but he wanted to keep leading them on to keep things interesting, or something like that. Just something to consider when throwing out stuff like that.
HightyTighty: Check mate, that is well said.
Shane isn't going anywhere until Frank leaves or a lower-level head coaching job is on the table. He could probably have an FCS head job now if he wanted it, but I don't see him considering that until his dad retires.
IIRC, wasn't their some directional school in the southeast that offered him a HC position?
Shane isn't going to leave unless it's the Texas OC job.
Let me preface this by saying I think there's basically as much chance of Shane taking the Texas job as there is of me getting an offer for it.
But is the job title special teams coordinator? That's the only way I could see it even being on Shane's radar. Though honestly I think associate head coach is a better resume padder than special teams coordinator. Shane's just never had a coordinator position. Then again I don't think special teams coordinator would do that much for him in terms of landing a head gig.
Shane was Special Teams Coordinator at Carolina before he got to Tech.
I didn't know that was his title there. So now I have more chance of accepting the Texas position than Shane.
Off to flight tracker to check the progress of Strong's flight to Illinois...
Lateral move position and experience wise: upgrade in terms of payout and recruits.
I don't think Shane leaves unless its' for an OC or HC gig at a smaller school.
I would think they would have Bud Foster as the Assistant Head Coach.

You haven't followed Hokie football very long.
since late 80's around the time VT beat WV and Major Harris
I think the implicit point that Fireman was making is that this discussion comes up a lot. Why is Shane the Associate HC? Is that nepotism? Why isn't someone like Foster "ranked higher" in the coaching tree? On and on.
Coordinators should not be Associate HC. They have too many gameday responsibilities to take on the HC job if the Big Whistle is unable to. Taking the RB coach and putting him in a managerial position is a smart one, and effectively what it amounted to was Shane taking over all of Billy Hite's responsibilities to leave the rest of the team to keep doing what they're doing. It's less of a "status" thing and more of a practical one.
Thanks that makes since, I'm not a long time member of the board, nor do I visit it a lot. Just started visiting the last few months more frequently to help with CFB withdrawals.
