The Virginia Tech Hokies beat the then No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes 35-21 on September 6, 2014 in the Horseshoe.
Ohio State just won college football's inaugural playoff national championship 42-20 over the Oregon Ducks. The Buckeyes, and its former third-string quarterback Cardale Jones, capped off an impressive three game run with a blowout win over No. 13 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game, thrashing of No. 1 Alabama in the semi-final and dismantling of No. 2 Oregon in the championship game.
The, presumably, preseason No. 1 Buckeyes travel to Lane Stadium for a Labor Day Night rematch with the Hokies. Hold onto your butts for a long offseason because September 7th cannot get here soon enough.
And because it needs to be said.
If O.State wins, they win. Just that! #HokieNation stop looking for hope! We're not Nat.Champs just because we beat them. Hate seeing that!— J.C. Coleman (@jc_coleman4) January 13, 2015

SEE YOU ALL IN LANE STADIUM ON LABOR DAY
We can all do the cheer together!

Say it with me now:
me at approximately 7:50 that night

September 7th is my birthday. I'm looking forward to it.
I think you messed up Joe, that's the score of the National Championship, not the VT at OSU game.
Edit: Disregard, it has been fixed.
I hope we get a chance to unnecessarily run the score up at the end on them too.
Oh wait, CFB actually had class.
Step 1: Score before final offensive play against Miami
Step 2: Run it up past zero against Wake (in regulation)
Step 3: Find a way to beat National Champs.
Baby steps
Buy up every ticket you can and do it early. The secondary market for this game is going to be crazy expensive.
Beat Ohio State... AGAIN
I just want to say this... I hope this ends all speculation on whether or not Virginia Tech can win it all. We beat Ohio State this year in Columbus. They won the title playing a style very similar to what we want to run. Once we get our offensive line going, with the way we historically run the ball and our defense, look out.
#sleepingtigers
I'm excited to see what we can do if we are healthy. Unfortunately, I assume we won't have either Shai or Marshawn for next year. Hopefully, JCC can keep up the good work.
And hopefully Travon McMillian is as advertised.
Exactly what I was thinking that second half. Power running game, offensive line bullies the other team and we let our talented RBs to do the rest. I think we have those RBs even if Williams/McKenzie won't play on Labor day. I hope we have the OL.
That is my main worry until proven otherwise. That and consistent QB play.
FTFY
Dear anOSU,
We'll see you on Labor Day in the Lane. Bring it.
Sincerely,
the Hokies
Lane shall rise again.
Hokiesports.com homepage is already advertising Labor day and 2015 tickets.
Hokiesports.com already has a welcome page promoting the game, complete with countdown timer. Well played.
Lane stadium will be LOUD. SO EXCITED!!!
Edit: Hokies LT_3 beat me to the punch by a minute. Leg for you!
Leg for you too.
Get your tickets people and ask for the time off now. You all need to be there. Our Hokies are going to need us on Labor Day.
I love when I give myself surprises. The date for the VT/OSU game is September 7th. I thought "I need to take the 8th off". I go to my calendar and behold, I already had it scheduled month's ago.
This times a million. Buckeye fans will take over the stadium if they can. We need to keep them confined to that south east corner.
Will Gameday be there on a Monday?
I don't think they do Mondays, right?
I dunno, but hopefully an osu has a case of the "Mondays".
I was waiting patiently for this. Leg for you sir.
No, I'm gonna go with the 2 biggest programs competing. Texas @ Notre Dame
Other maybe Wisconsin vs Alabama @ATT Stadium
I believe by law of the 11th commandment, they must show Notre Dame or spend the afterlife burnig in hell
But if they don't, why not the defending national champs vs. the only team to beat them from last year.
Place your bets now.
Ohio State's starting quarterback on Labor Day will be ___________.
JT Barrett
Sacked 6 times.
Having a lot of face time with the ground
Dang it! That was my first fat-finger downvote. I'm sorry. I threw you a leg to even it out.
You can reset any vote.
So that's what "reset" means...
Man, it's been a long day.
Thanks!
under Dadi Nicholas.
wearing a national title ring
I'd imagine that would affect his throwing motion.
Intercepted 3 times.
...eagerly signing up for some onlines.
In Bud we trust. In Loeffler we hope.
Coming in 2015 Part Deux:
Does opening the season against the defending nat'l champs sway some recruits who were previously undecided?
Completely with JC on this one. Didn't know how to say it without sounding ungrateful for the huge win, but we look like amateurs by repeatedly honking our own horns on the OSU win. Fact of the matter is no one besides us cares about that game any more, though it was something amazing. Again, great win and I can happily say I was in Columbus on September 6, but it was becoming overdone with how many fellow VT fans wouldn't stop with the oh-so creative "I guess we should be co-national champs then..." tweets. Ohio State picked themselves up from what was a sloppy loss on their part and made something out of what was once nothing. They deserve all the credit in the world for that, and they put together quite the show the last three games. With that being said, bring em on come September!
I agree, and am very happy a player came forward and said it. Even if J.C. ends up buried on the depth chart next year, I think his leadership will prove vital to this team. This team needs leaders to remind them that no one's accomplishments but their own matter. You can't hang your hat on what someone else did, and there is no award for beating the National Champion.
You do your talking on the field, and we'll have our chance next season.
I don't know, my former boss did a damn good job of this.
I'm glad to know I am not alone with this train of thought running around in my head. Yea, it was a great win, but that was last season, it's over. Let's prepare for the 2015 season, because I'm pretty sure OSU will want plenty of payback. So the VT squad better be ready and hungry for another big win, cause if not, it will be a long agonizing game. I have no doubt the coaches are delivering this message to the team, I just hope all the players buy into the message and listen to the coaches.
We beat Ohio State on the field of play this season in Columbus. We are allowed to have a little fun with that.
Sometimes I get a little tired of the constant chastising of anyone who isn't 100% super serious never let yourself enjoy anything unless we're the ones holding the crystal ball or golden vagina at the end of the year. We went on the road and beat the guys who won the national championship. We are the only team that can say that. Let us freakin enjoy it, lord knows the program could use a little swagger again.
Yep, I'm with you. It's all in fun. No one seriously thinks VT should get a co-championship or anything like that. Most everything I read about this is complete sarcasm or just good-natured trash talk.
What I find most hilarious is how often a loss like that is justified in other conferences, to pump up the winning team who ultimately didn't have as good a year. How often have we heard, for example in the SEC, "well [middling team] beat a really good [top team] on the road, so they're better than their record indicates." Instant boost to perception and ranking of that middling team and the top team never suffers for it in perception or ranking. With us, it's "VT beat anOSU on the road, but damn that was a fluke so no one should talk about it" from a lot of people. So we're allowed to have a little fun with the fact that we're the blemish on their sterling season. Now it's the countdown to Labor Day to see if we can do it again...
It's said to be the best you have to beat the best!! Well on September 14 VT proved they can beat the best. Now, Hopefully all the low expectations will stop. Will we Be in NC game every year? maybe not. Can we win NC? YES!! Can we have fun with our most exciting win this year? YES!! Can VT vs OSU II get here to soon? NO!!!!!! This is going to be a long off season!!!!
Oh I definitely didn't mean to come across as a buzzkill or try to numb down what a great game that was. But fact of the matter is, no one cares that we beat OSU because we were so inconsistent throughout the remainder of the season. I know all trash-talking by Hokies for that win is all in good fun, but me personally I just got tired of it. Love the Hokies, loved the big win, just got tired of beating a dead horse. Just my opinion
I kinda disagree. A lot of people care that we win in there and beat Ohio State. We were highly inconsistent over the course of the season because 1, we were very young, and 2, we got hit with an injury bug the likes of which really aren't seen very often. When you're down to playing backup OL in an already thin unit, missing your best DL player for the entirety of the campaign, missing out on arguably the 2nd best DB for the majority of the season, down to only 1 in what showed to be a 3 headed monster in the Ohio State game, having to go with your 5th string RB, and dealing with a QB that played the entire year with a messed up back stemming from that Ohio State game, you're going to suffer. What we did in Columbus was show everyone how good a team we can be when we get rolling. And the ones who are paying the closest attention to this? Our recruits, which is why you're currently seeing 9 4* recruits committed, per Rivals. We showed our potential that night, being a team that can go anywhere against anyone and win the game.
By 2016, it won't be only us that realizes the potential this program has right now.
I agree and anyone who is posting on a website dedicated to their team of choice can't claim they don't take this stuff at least moderately seriously.. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Fans will be fans, so them continuing to boast about the win is neither here nor there. However, what you have to like about JC Coleman's tweet is that a man with actual influence on what happens on the field isn't satisfied with a future trivia question answer win. The guys inside the program have to have that mentality if Tech ever wants to win the big one, because beating the future National Champs in September doesn't make a team capable of winning the National Championship. Tech proved they can compete and beat any team in the nation, but they also proved they were woefully incapable of putting forth the consistent effort to make a title run. What was their most consistent stretch of the season? Beating UVA and then beating Cincy in the bowl game? If you can play 2 or 3 consistent games in a row then you're only about 1/4 of the way towards winning a title.
If Ohio State beats Tech next year and then loses multiple games and fails to reach the playoffs, they are not going to say, "well, at least we got revenge on the Hokies". The season will be considered a failure. And if the Football Gods told Ohio State they could have another National Championship, with the caveat being they would have to suffer another humiliating loss to Tech along the way, they would accept that offer in a heartbeat. You know what Michael Jordan did to the guy who beat him out for a spot on his high school basketball team? He invited him to his HOF induction ceremony and made fun of him. Tech is Doug Flutie and Bo Jackson sitting on a couch doing the Heisman pose, and Ohio State is Joe Montana flashing his fistful of Super Bowl rings. You have to think like a champion if you want to be one, so hopefully JC's viewpoint is shared by all of his teammates.
Very well said and welcome to TKP! As a relatively new member myself, I can say you are definitely in the right place. And I 100% agree with everything you stated above.
1) Michael Jordan is a jackhole
2) I love that Montanta/Flutie/Jackson/Walker commercial. LOVE IT
...
Leg.
One point about that commercial, anyone else notice that Joe is wearing 5 rings?? He only won 4 Super Bowls, what is the fifth ring from??
MNC at ND
Thanks, I knew he played at ND but I never knew that he won the championship there.
I would say Ohio State winning the championship with a 14-1 record is better than them winning the championship with a 15-0 record. How many teams can say they beat Ohio State the year they won it all? Everyone who sees that one will remember who beat them.
Beating OSU at the Shoe doesn't make us co-national champions. It makes us the 1 on the right hand side of their record. OSU has a great season and overcame a lot of setbacks on the injury front with their QBs. Hats off to them. They took care of business 14 times. But not 15.
Go Hokies.
I'd ove for us to have stronger OOC schedules, but it is interesting how many teams we've played OOC that have gone on to win the NC that same season. The only bust was Boise.
I know our OOC schedules have proven to be incredibly difficult by the fact that USC, LSU, Alabama (twice?), and OSU went on to win the National Championship the year they played the Hokies. Hokies played all of them well (except the LSU game; however, we did beat LSU a couple years prior). Great win by VT over OSU!
I woke up this morning at 5 A.M. like usual, bummed that it's only Tuesday and that the week was going to drag on and on. Then I checked the score from last night and saw that Ohio State won. Now I can't stop smiling and planning my return to Blacksburg on Labor Day to crush the Buckeyes' souls again. I haven't been this pumped or seen a fanbase so ready for a game in a while. And it's only January.
Less than eight months. Let's go.
237 days....
You wouldn't want to use this one if you remember what happened the next week.
Hint: Steelers took the Jets behind the woodshed on their way to the Super Bowl.
We'll reverse the roles sice Steelers are a blue collar kind of team and our team has a blue collar lunch pail theme
Blue collar, defense first, run it down the gut philosophy makes it easy for a lifelong Stillers fan to become a Hokie
*yells battle cry*
So Florida State got their asses handed to them by a team who had their asses handed to them by a team that was beat handily at home by a 7-6 Hokie team. Can we say overrated?!
That makes us Pac-12 and ACC Champions too! /sarc
Nah, just that any given Saturday... (or Thursday or Monday or Wednesday or Tuesday)
Tangential topic:
I wonder how much of an impact OSU's unlimited practice had versus the 20 hour limit Oregon was saddled with the week leading up to the Championship game.
Good question. I would think it had a huge impact. The Buckeye players were probably doing nothing but football prep since they got back to Columbus from beating Bama.
I really hope Oregon fans take the high road and don't use this as an excuse as to why they lost. The better team won last night, that's the bottom line.
I wonder how much Oregon not starting classes until September 29 helped them during September games?
Is this the centerfold from Playbird magazine
The way I see it, we beat a very good Ohio State team, that got better as the year went on. We went the opposite way. It's not a reason to say we're National Champs (though generally people say that in good fun), but it is reason to say "Bring it on next year!" We beat them once, in part because Bud is a great defensive coordinator and had a great game plan that was executed well going into it. I see us putting on quite the show. I have faith in Whit to not pull a Weaver and change the venue to Fed Ex field between now and then.
Oregon could have won the game, but they shot themselves in the foot every chance they had.
The only thing I don't like about it, is this has a similar theme to when we faced Alabama to open the season. It's going to be all that's talked about in college football for the next 7 1/2 months. The returners will be analyzed half to death, the people who left in the draft and how that will affect the teams, the fact that both teams are young...I could go on.
Won't change the fact that we handed Ohio State their first home loss in quite some time, and their first out of conference home loss in even more time. We won't have those streaks for them to break, but they'll come in looking for revenge and hoping to shut the crowd up. Lane will be LOUD!
The college football world didn't really care about the VT-Bama game. Everyone knew we were gonna lose, it was just another game on Saturday to most people. This one will be different because OSU is gonna be looking for revenge.
While I'm more confident for this year's game than I was going into last years for the simple fact that we did actually beat them last year, I'm also fully aware that they might well unleash an unholy shit stomping on us.
Many people expected something similar after we beat Nebraska in their house. Though not as big of a win, it was still an upset.
I think the exact opposite. Oregon got break after break after break -- recovering their own fumbles, having OSU fumbles bounce right into their hands, Jones pulling the Jameis Winston self-fumble, etc. OSU overcame a lot of tough luck and won by a solid margin. This was a bad loss for Oregon.
Not to mention (bold prediction) it was the closest they will ever come to a national championship. Which makes me sad. They've done enough in the last decade to deserve a championship, in my book. But I predict that beating FSU to play in this game was their program's high water mark.
I'll admit that tOSU looks a little intimidating, but then again, it looked like Oregon was going to destroy them after the Duck's first possession.
Anything can happen. We did it before, we can do it again.
Just pumped to get the chance - gotta play big games to win them.
VT may not be the national champion, but this won't stop me from annoying every Ohioan I know with a billion Transitive National Champion jokes.
Throw in Wake Forest to really piss them off.
That just makes me sad.
Pretty sure I'm stealing this from another poster, but even though Ohio State won the National Championship, Virginia Tech won the State of Ohio championship this year.
When can I buy tickets?
An overlooked fact of this result is that VT has now improved its record against teams that have finished the season in the top 5
This is true, but I don't think it will show up in the box score.
We've all heard the stats about how we can't seem to beat top 5 teams, but I don't think this one will count because OSU was ranked #8 when we played them in September.
Its funny how they'll use one argument to disparage us when we lose, but then change the parameters to disqualify our accomplishments when we have success.
I don't know. The 1-26 record against top #5 teams is a pretty hard mark to defend.
it is, but I read an interesting article that make this point along the lines of "most accidents happen within a mile of the house." It turns out that most teams have a horrible record against top 5 competition, even ones that are traditional powerhouses.
eh, I was at the 1, and was in the house for at least a handful of the others.
Close only counts in horsehoes, hand grenades, and elephant farts. We need to get a few more on the winning side, no?
I hear ya, I wish I had the article it was well written and backed it up with stats. Basically true top 5 teams don't lose that often, it sounds obvious of course but the stats that they included for other teams were quite shocking in how poor everybody as a whole does.
I remember that article, I think it was linked from TKP last year.
But think about it, usually of the top 5 teams they normally have a single loss on the season.
So, of 60 games going into the bowls, only 5 are losses and many of those are to other top teams.
With 125 teams in the league, that's 55 losses, in a given year, almost half the FBS teams lose to a top 5 team.
We have a knack for playing eventually #1 teams. What do you think that does to our percentage? We end up playing the guys that don't lose any. 0% losses in a year will hurt our average plenty.
that's exactly what I am getting at. We play the true and tested top 5 and our record shows it.
In Bud We Trust
Welcome to TKP, have a leg!
Sure it has been mentioned but how bout all the teams we have played in the last 10-15 or so years that have gone on to be National Champs. FSU, Miami, USC, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State. We have played some good ones.
That is a good point, and we can finally say we won one of those games.
to me the important thing is that like this year Bud will keep us in pretty much every game. If the offense can string together some drives (like they did against OSU) We can beat anyone in the country. The question is can we expect our freshmen to be better next year and can we find somebody to get bucky the ball? If the answer is yes to those 2 questions we could easily do next year what we all thought we were going to do after the OSU game back in September.
Do you see Noles? All it takes to beat Oregon is to play defense when it counts.
And not turn the ball over 5 out of 6 possessions to start the second half
237 days
It's a pretty special way to start the season, I'm still bummed that we beat them over there and our season goes in the opposite direction. The pundits always made fun of us for not being able to beat a major team and we finally beat Ohio State except our season was miserable. Perhaps we lose these big games and just focus on getting those 10 wins. I don't know what i'm saying anymore, i'm lost
The last part doesn't need to be said. Obviously anyone with a brain knows that's true, but we're all having some fun with it because it's ridiculous that we beat the National Champion at their house. It's a joke.
Congrats to the Buckeyes

I cannot WAIT to see more of this:

Hmmm...this is the first time I've noticed the hot chick in the purple shirt laughing at Bucky.
Funny, now that you point it out;
this is the first time that I've noticed that there are other people in the gif besides the chick in the purple shirt.
That's a nifty dance.
Bucky better hope you don't see more of that...or any other player for that matter. CFB will not be happy.
he was pretty happy that night
I'd like to see it 6 or 7 times in next year's game.
That's going to be quite a quarterback competition this Spring in Columbus.
if they think they are gonna come into lane and techs gonna lay down for them they better wake up. the terror dome restores its name September 7th.
So, how early is too early to start tailgating for this one?
You haven't already started?
I just needed outside confirmation.
LOL, funny part about it is that the wife and I were talking about planning for it, yesterday.
I already bought 2 new tables on clearance and last week was talking to a tailgate buddy about maybe building a portable keg keeper. How many taps, etc.
Already took that Tuesday off, so pumped!
yeah man, i'm just waiting for those advance vacation request forms to come around.
Luckily for me, my manager is a big Hokie fan, so no forms was needed since he'll be out for the same reasons
Never understood the whole Poland Ball thing - but this made me laugh.
Edit: found larger version on imgur
Virginia Tech Ball is misrepresented here.
This is really good, thanks for bringing it around
So basically, this was us last night...
So which QB would we rather play against??????
The upside, we have video on all three!
whomever UVA is trotting out
bring on all three. Bud eats Braxton Flakes, Cardale Crunch and JT Jacks for breakfast
Pretty sure JT will pass if given the choice of playing us again. He got pancaked all night.
wyatt teller loves pancakes
It's gonna be a deuzie....looking forward to a kick-ass game....just like this year's battle! The Buckeyes will be thinking about the one team that kept them from a perfect season all this year....can't wait!
Our d line next year against their offensive line.
It's like the unstoppable force vs the immovable object.
If they stop our D line, Bud will just corner blitz all night.
Bud goes with a triple eagle alignment, OSU leaves dumbfounded again.
Bud only uses one down lineman (Maddy) who finishes the game with 10 sacks on his own. Dadi and Ekanibal get 3 INTs each and Kendall doubles all of those numbers. Urban Meyer tries to eat a sad pizza when he gets back to Columbus but it gets knocked to the ground when Jack Tyler sacks him because why not.
Seriously, this can happen, right?
throw in Kam Chancellor flying in from Seattle to run out from the locker room on a field goal to leap over the line for the block and I totally buy into this scenario
Forget the block- Kam leaps over the line in time to kick the ball before the opposing kicker can, and kicks a 95 yard FG for the Hokies.
Cardale Jones is having a press conference on his decision whether to declare or not right now
