The Hokies are coming into arguably their hardest stretch of the season, four games, four ranked opponents. As if that wasnt going to be tough enough, they get to start that stretch with what will likely be a pissed off Louisville Cardinals team. Louisville suffered their first ACC loss to UNC on Saturday by one point in which they led by 13 with about 8 minutes to play. We get to play against one of our former signees in Motrezl Harrell, who will likely have a monster day with JVZ out of the lineup.

Harrell
Harrell(#24) comes in averaging 15.5 ppg and 9 rpg, outscored only by teammate, Terry Rozier(#0) so far this season, who is dropping in about 17.5 ppg from the point guard position.
Rozier

Rozier is joined in the backcourt by guard Chris Jones (#3), who is averaging 13.2 ppg.
Jones
Rounding out the scorers in double digits brings us to Wayne Blackshear(#25) who throws down 12.9 ppg for the Cardinals from the small forward position.
Blackshear

After these four Cardinals though it is a precipitous drop in scoring average, with the next player putting in an average of 4 ppg. This may be the Cardinals greatest weakness if the Hokies can find a way to keep one or two of the key four from scoring, then they may stay in this game. This is going to be a tall task, especially defending Harrell around the rim. He may only be 6'8 but he has all the mean streak we could hope that Pierce eventually develops. He can overpower other bigs that are ACC ready which is something we lack.

Our shooters will have to be on against this team, as Louisville's current average margin of victory is 73-56, or 17 points. The betting line on this game was at 25 this morning when I looked. If there is one thing that Virginia Tech does well, its shoot from outside, where we are currently ranked 12th in the country in 3PT% at just over 40%. We will need those long balls to stay with this high powered offense.

One area of surprise is that Louisville is not exceedingly dominant on the glass, so if our bigs can stay out of trouble and establish themselves down low, we might be able to keep Louisville from having multiple chances on the offensive end. Another area where these two teams are surprisingly similar is at the Charity Stripe. Louisville comes in with a dreadful 65% from the line to go up against our vastly improved 61% (alot thanks to JVZ being suspended) so dont expect Louisville to run away with the game at the line. They have a hard time getting to the line, which was really evident on Saturday, where they only shot two free throws in the last ten minutes of that game against UNC. This could be critical to coming back against this team, if we can play lock down defense while scoring on our offensive possessions.

Hope, dreams, and Merry go rounds, but I just cant see us getting this upset. Louisville is at home, they are likely angry and Pitino wont let them fall into a trap game since they face Duke after us. The Cardinals may lead by double digits early and will probably maintain that lead throughout.

Virginia Tech 51- Louisville 74

Hopefully the Hokies prove me wrong.

Game time is 7:00. Its on comcast sports net for me, channel 578 on FIOS which i think is pretty universal.

Does anybody remember in Semi-Pro when Coffee Black saw the grit and determination of an undermanned Tropics squad and the douchiness of his own Spurs and decided at half time to switch teams and refs were ok with it?

Maybe Montrezl will be our Coffee Black. Otherwise we gon get stomped.

Can you watch this for free on the HokiesXtra app

Comcast channel 856 in DC/Metro area.

"Exit light..."

I am patiently waiting for this game with beer in hand.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Well at least we get to watch Montrezl. Too bad he's playing for the bad guys instead of us.

Blacked out on watchESPN if you are in ACC territory.

SMH... another blacked out game in my area. It's all good tho, I live in RVA which is only like home away from home for pretty much all Hokie fans. This game was the first thing that popped up when I opened the WatchESPN site. Really getting sick of this blackout crap. Guess I'm gonna have to settle for the Wizards/Spurs game tonight.

The CSN alt channel is showing it on DirecTV, channel 642-1

I have Comcast... but I appreciate the gesture.

I'm really glad that for the intro shots leading to this game they did a shot of Johnston from the back. His hair doesn't look as ridiculous that way. Nobody could take us seriously if they showed that weave in all of its glory.

Time to watch Harrell and wonder what could have been. I'm happy with the direction we're taking now though.

Also, Bibbs is out of the starting lineup?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

zomg a box and 1!

@VTimHokie85

If your in the new river valley and have dish it's Chanel 412-28

This....this is painful to watch.

Ya it's pretty painful

Buzz throwing every defense at em: box n' 1, 3-2, 2-3, man, back to 3-2

@VTimHokie85

Good effort by Pierce right there.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Man..the opponent doesn't just happen to shoot their season best from 3 every time we play them. At some point we have to start questioning our perimeter defense right? The collapsing nature of our defense leaves us extremely susceptible to wide open penetrate and dish 3's.

T_Sprad3

I would wager that Buzz is willing to give the opponent kickout looks in exchange for not being dominated around the rim. We have to make up for that lack of size somehow, so we collapse quickly.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Watch the guards at the top in the 2-3 defend the post on every drive. They're straying so far there's only wide open shots for everyone, you don't see that in Syracuse's 2-3

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

i say let em keep shooting 3s and we really dont have much of a choice at this point. UofL's forwards are too much of a problem for us. Just gotta hope for them to miss and long rebounds. We are outmatched and kinda just have to pick our poison at this point

@VTimHokie85

We need inside defense and scoring. Someone tell me why Cadarian Raines oops I mean Joey van Zegeren isn't playing?

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Caused he ticked buzz off somehow

Indefinite suspension

Justin Bibbs knows no fear

Beautiful basketball by pierce and hill there!

T_Sprad3

You see glimpses of a good player in Pierce, will be good player in future.

When Pierce moves his feet he does pretty good. He's wayyyyy better than Joey was at this stage if his career

we should start calling Adam Smith the Mad Bomber

This will be at least a 30 - 40 point loss tonight. I have said it before and I say it again. You WILL NOT win in this league running 4 guards and a freshman center or any center for that matter. I just hope all these losses don't destroy the teams' chemistry as the season goes on.

This game is about what I expected unfortunately. I thought Harrell not their center would be having a bigger game but its either get pounded inside or watch Louisville find the three ball magic they haven't had all season. They were shooting under 30% from behind the arc coming in. Painful lessons to learn

Now THAT was embarassing. Like Penn State 1 and 1 embarassing.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

It hurts to see a team with Hokies across the chest, get hammered like this night in and night out. Just outclassed right now and I'm starting to feel bad for em..giving max effort ,just nothing they can do.

T_Sprad3

The fact that they're still giving max effort is what's so endearing about them. This is so much more fun than watching JJ's teams. We have a lot to look forward to as fans.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

The sad part is that we are now essentially playing their all freshmen team. I know they have fresh legs but its still ugly.

Rebuilding in the current Acc is gonna be brutal for any team. Next season should be a bit better and hopefully year 3 is when we start seeing a competitive team night in and night out

At least the last few minutes have been essentially freshmen vs freshmen? Lol boom! Our freshmen are better

T_Sprad3

The final score beats the Vegas spread. Guess that's one positive. Just can't defend a complete game with our current roster.
