By VT policy, a person has to win a national award to have their jersey retired. Has anyone won one recently?

Kam Chancellor won the Super Bowl, so that has to count for something, no?

I'd be 100% okay with amending the policy. Tyrod won ACC POY, so I'd like to see his retired, and would be absolutely onboard with Bam Bam Kam receiving the honor, too. But as the rule stands, I don't think there is anyone eligible who hasn't had their jersey retired.

Agreed T-Mobile! One of THE GREATS. ON and OFF the field-

And- ALWAYS seems to be supporting the program by wearing his Hokie Colors!

Yeah, to be honest, I don't think anyone has been worthy of that recognition, including Tyrod

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

Well first off, who all (besides Bruce Smith, Vick and Beamer) have had their numbers retired?

Carrol Dale 84 and Jim Pyne 73, and Strock 10. I think thats it. Vick doesn't. He just has his jersey retired.

Frank Loria also

Ahhhh yes, I knew there was one more.

Wait, I was wrong about Strock, Loria was #10.

Corey Moore.
Won the Nagurski and Lombardi. Was an unanimous All-American.

Retired Jerseys
In 2002, the Virginia Tech athletics department developed a new policy on retiring jerseys. This special honor is bestowed to acknowledge an individual who has won an established national award in their sport, while allowing the number to continue to be worn by others. Tech will no longer retire numbers.
In 2002, three football jerseys were retired in ceremonies at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field. The fourth was retired in 2006. The jersey of Michael Vick was retired Sept. 1 prior to the LSU game, Frank Beamer's jersey was retired Sept. 12, prior to the Marshall game, and Cornell Brown's was retired on Nov. 20, during the West Virginia game. Jake Grove had his jersey retired on Sept. 23, prior to a game against Cincinnati.
Frank Beamer
Winner of eight national coach of the year awards following the 1999 season
Michael Vick
Winner of the 2000 ESPY as College Football's Performer of the Year
Cornell Brown
Named the Football News 1995 National Defensive Player of the Year
Jake Grove
Awarded the Rimington Award, given to the nation's top collegiate center, following the 2003 season.

Isn't Grove and Moore up there too?

Kendall Fuller will be next.

Bucky Gods Gift Shmurda

If we can feed him the ball more.

Jimmy Graham was never fully utilized at Miami, imo. And it seems his skills translates to the NFL pretty well. My fear is that is Bucky's future. I hope I'm wrong.

The Dude Abides

Agreed, but Graham played basketball forever and was a real late comer to football, if I recall correctly. Bucky's been doing Bucky things on the football field for quite a while now.

I'd be interested in seeing the policy amended to account for NFL performance too. If Kam plays for 7-8 more seasons and is a multiple Pro Bowler, maybe wins a couple more rings... It would make sense to me to honor him, even if his play while at Tech wasn't national award worthy.

I'd have to disagree here, what he or any other VT player does in the NFL (despite how incredible it is) is completely separate to what he did here.

This is the level at which you need to achieve to get the honor

*in 2002 the University amended the policy to where only jerseys are retired, allowing numbers to continue being used going forward, but grandfathered all retired numbers to keep them out of circulation*

It is really, really hard to get your number retired at Tech. The list of accomplishments these guys have are impressive, and while we've had some really good players come through, I'm not sure anyone is really deserving of the retired jersey honor. Of anyone I can think, because of his accomplishments in the NFL, I would think Kam Chancellor has the best chance.

I would agree with that. Tyrod, Logan, RMFW, DW4, Eddie Royal, Flowers, Kam's time at VT. They were all great players and put up great numbers but I couldn't see putting any or all of them in the categories of those stated above.

I think our best chances of seeing a national award winner outside of making the all american team is Bucky getting the John Mackey or Kendall getting the Thorpe award.

Compare our policy to Ohio State - you have to win the Heisman.

Well, sucks for anyone who plays on defense then.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Would being an All-American count as a national award to make one eligible? Not saying we should retire every all American but it would open the conversation on some.

Babcock!

We put the K in Kwality

Kevin Jones is the only one on that list who has a shot. I don't think anyone else over the past decade has a chance other than maybe Tyrod, and even that's a long shot. Like Alum07 said, getting your jersey retired at VT is no small thing.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Tyrod

I think T-Mobile.

In all honesty, Jimmy Williams jersey should be the next one retired. The guy was a UNANIMOUS All-American in 2005. To put that in perspective, VT has only had four Unanimous All-Americans in its history: Jim Pyne, Corey Moore, Jake Grove and Jimmy Williams. Williams is the only one who doesnt have his jersey hanging in the North Endzone.

Given the new rules, it is extremely difficult for a player to have his jersey retired. One must now win an established National Award. Since the new policy was enforced in 2002, only Jake Grove has won a national award (2003 Remington Trophy). If we had had these rules back in the day, we would have a lot less retired jerseys/numbers. Frank Loria, Carroll Dale and Jim Pyne never won any National Awards. It is interesting to think that if these players were around today, they probably wouldnt have had their jerseys retired.

I have a lot of friends at NC State, so I attended their Spring Game last year. Everyone was ecstatic that Russell Wilson, fresh off his Super Bowl Championship, would be there to have his #16 jersey retired. Wilsons #16 was the tenth jersey retired by the Wolfpack, and his name was prominently displayed alongside former #1 NFL draft pick, Mario Williams. I quickly found the retired numbers of former NC State stars Philip Rivers and Torry Holt. All four of these football players clearly deserve to have their careers immortalized at their University (or in Russell Wilsons case, his first University). But heres something interesting; if these four football players had attended Virginia Tech instead of NC State, their jerseys might not have been retired. Russell Wilson never won a National Award; he didnt even win ACC Player of the Year (what up, Tyrod?). Mario Williams, Philip Rivers and Torry Holt didnt win any National Awards, either.

I think our established national award requirement needs to be removed so we can retire anyones jersey. I mean, were #DBU! And weve only got one DBs jersey hanging in the North Endzone (two if you count Frank Beamer, but I think his jersey was retired as a result of his coaching accomplishments). How impressive would it be to see the jerseys of Kam Chancellor, Brandon Flowers, Jimmy Williams, DeAngelo Hall and Kyle Fuller hanging next to each other? Ooooh, shivers

And it should be placed right next to the scoreboard where the opposing teams offensive yardage is display on hokievision. so when you see those low numbers...you know exactly why

Torrian Gray should have his Jersey retired for coaching #DBU.

Lee Suggs. Dude was unstoppable before and after his hurt knee. Also holds the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a rushing touchdown, I believe.

Definitely!

I understand the policy, but I would truly love to see Tyrod's jersey retired. I can't quite put my finger on it but man, I've never loved a player that much.

Vick?

The Dude Abides

Perhaps Danny Coale for his Sugar Bowl winning catch?

@historyhokie.bsky.social

It's a shame we can't do something to commemorate Bud after winning the Broyles. They retired Beamer's jersey for winning a coaching award, but Foster didn't even play here. It would feel really manufactured if they retired a Murray State jersey.

Maybe a statue?

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

A statue of a huge bronzed beaten up lunch pail seems like an entirely appropriate homage to Bud, as well as reflective of the overall Hokie spirit.

The players could rub it on their way into Lane during the Walk, a la Howard's Rock.

Someone get Whit on the phone.

"Exit light..."

Yeah but where would you put it?

I would think the ideal spot would be right outside the tunnel entrance into Lane, but we already have the 'Reach for Excellence' stone.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Put it in the middle of the opponent's sideline so that they keep running into it as a reminder of what's about to happen.

Something kind of like this:

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

I understand that this guy is probably hammered drunk...but WTF is he trying to do?

Onward and upward

I think he's trying to win a footrace with the other dude. Either that or he really wanted a rail.

There's only one explanation...Da Bears.

That pole is actually a pretty good representation of what Cutler does to the Bears' offense.

I'm thinking right out front of the stadium by the main entrance on Spring Road. Is that the entrance players and coaches use during the Walk?

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

How about, when Lane Stadium becomes too old and has to be renovated or replaced, we build a new stadium in the shape of a giant lunch pail. The top of the lunch pail would open like a real lunch pail, giving us a retractable roof. On top would be an enormous Orange "VT" that would be visible from space.

Above the entrance it will say "Welcome to the Terror Dome".
