I know after seeing this title you were probably wondering if our basketball team is going to wear black uniforms at some point in the year. Well, this isn't the case.
I was on Twitter earlier reading a conversation between fellow Hokie fans. They were talking about how Florida State was wearing black uniforms tonight. One Hokie fan brought up that the Tech basketball team wore black uniforms once.
That was apparently against Pittsburgh during the 2003-04 season. I tried to find images from this game, but couldn't. If anyone could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. I am a uniform junkie, and I am very curious as to what this looked like.

Unless I missed a game in Cassel, we played Pitt twice that season: once in Pittsburgh and once in the Big East tournament. That newspaper is from the former, since I don't think we'd wear black unis in a tournament... Any articles I've found about the game online have had broken picture links, but I didn't try internet archives or anything.

Black base, big maroon stripe down the sides, white lettering with maroon outlines. It wasn't really that bad.

I was there when he threw that one down on BC. A change of pants was required when I got home.
Closest I've seen is the dark maroon jerseys looked black on TV when I was drinking during one of the games...I'd be all for black uniforms for both football and bball....pretty sure all maroon everything would trump black uni's though.
I think a lot of schools that add black to their uniforms when it is not a school color are usually adding it because white is one of their school colors, like Duke or UNC. That being said I can live with one game a season where the team wears black
I would imagine that we see very few instances of alternate color uniforms in the future. Whit is a traditionalist and I would think once a season is probably his limit on that. I vaguely recall the black uni's, and between the black background and the maroon that was on them, they were really really dark & that might be one reason we've not tried them again. Also, the basketball team hasn't used nearly as many alternative uni's as the football team over the last several years. Some, yes, but not to the extent that we see in football.
I always preferred the orange uni's for hoops. Probably because they were predominant when I was at VT, so that's what seemed natural. Maroon looks really good, but the orange seemed more natural in basketball. Just the opposite of football, where maroon seems natural.
Good thing we aren't because only god knows how many fans would be up in arms about how they aren't our colors. I for one would think it would be a nice change in pace, even just for one game. Whatever gets the fans and even the players for more excited for a game, I'm all for. Ex. Boise St. game, Nike pro combats
