Obviously Jones's! But he didn't get time to stink!
Being sarcastic, don't flay me.
If he stays Brazton is GONE. My guess he leaves.
He may leave and Braxton may go anyway.
Here is my conspiracy theory on that. Jones goes NFL, Braxton has been given assurances he will be started next year, Barrett would get year after that and by then next QB in program is ready under Urban.
Looks like Jones got the assurance to be the starter next year, Barrett the backup with 2 yrs remaining to be the starter and Braxton Miller either leaves for LSU, FSU or VT. Or Miller changes his position to wr/rb, because he is not NFL caliber QB.
#sources or #conjecture?
Either way, yeah, I think that's what probably happened too, but I'm definitely living in the latter hashtag.
This is sarcastica right? I mean, sure, Braxton probably will leave, but to come to VT? That will be blocked by OSU and besides, even if it wasn't, we would pass on him because possibly having 4 different QBs for 4 years (Logan, Brewer, Braxton, Durkin/Ford/Motley/Lawson) is just bad.
I dont know how the coaching staff would feel, but I would take Braxton Miller in a about half a heartbeat.
Braxton v2013, yes, but Braxton v2015 after a shoulder surgery in a new system for 1 year, no. Continuity leads to success and the biggest positions where you need continuity in order to achieve success are OL and QB.
anOSU can't block the transfer if Miller were to enroll in a graduate program that VT offers and anOSU does not.
That said, Miller to VT is about as likely as French having a large block of cheese for dinner, followed by cake for dessert. Or Joe shopping at Pottery Barn.
You don't think OSU would find a way to block him from transferring to their Week 1 opponent the next season?
I don't doubt they'd try, but a literal reading of the NCAA rules doesn't forbid it, AFAIK. Conference rules would apply to B1G schools, but VT is of course unaffected there, as well.
A lot of it depends on whether he reported for classes on last Monday. I'd imagine if he starts taking classes, he's going to be considered a transfer and not a graduate enrollment since he graduated in December.
From my understanding the school cannot block a graduate transfer eg Russell Wilson from NCst to Wisc.
I might be wrong, but I thought Brewer was blocked by Texas Tech from a graduate transfer to another Big 12 school, which led him to coming to VT. I hope I am wrong, because I think a graduate should be able to go wherever he/she wants.
Yep, conference transfer rules still apply even if NCAA rules do not prohibit such a move.
Thanks for clarifying that for me.
Ted Ginn Sr. was his HS coach?
He's returning to school.
"Football has always been a stepping stone for my education."
Interesting change of mindset.
I guess he really did come to play school after all.
So exactly what was the point of the news conference?
I guess you try and steal as much spotlight as possible, while you still can...
Cardale returns to OSU.
Braxton - want to join VT to beat OSU on Sept 7?
I think his age alone means he goes. 23 year old sophmore?
Why spend another year in college that you might effectively waste? Certainly if Meyer tells him he won't be the starter he will go. He might even go if he is told he will be competing for the starter spot.
Alls I know if the more uncertainty the better at that position when the Buckeyes saunter into Lane Stadium, and hopefully have read their own hype all offseason to forget what happened the last time our boys lined up.
Braxton has his own decisions in his life that he has to make--Cardale Jones
Officially open up the Braxton Miller sweepstakes
What is Urban telling these three guys? Is Barrett hurt worse than they are letting on?
Hmmmm....disregard.
So he holds a presser to announce he's staying?
uhhh.... ok
you don't always have a press conference as an act of selfishness. Sometimes you have a press conference to answer all the same stupid questions once instead of multiple reporters calling one after another to ask the same stupid questions.
some of it can/is about visibility, but he's a star/popular and that's what public figures do.
He had the best out to not have to do one: "I played in 3 games last season with a beast RB that extensively contributed. I need more time to get settled."
Urban had 3 secret 1-on-1 meetings with each QB and he told each of them that they're "the guy"....just watch the sleazy guy. He'll continually wink at each of his QBs when the other two aren't looking at him....
I don't know if this kind of disparagement of Urban Meyer is warranted. I have yet to see him actually do anything that would lead me to believe he's a slimeball. In fact, ever since our game with them this year, I actually have a lot of respect for the guy. He was extremely humble in defeat, and never made an excuse. He spoke well of us through and through. In my opinion, he earned our respect that night.
I'm not an Urban fan at all...but that was a joke (sort of a spoiled with 3-Heisman candidates riches kind of a joke)
I am not a big Urban fan either, he's a good coach for sure but something just rubs me the wrong way. that being said, and realizing you were joking, I bet he is telling all of them that the best QB will win the job. Right now my money is on Jones, and if I was Miller I would absolutely transfer somewhere.
You did hear about the circles of entitlement he gave his players at Florida right? Where they could do no wrong if they were a starter? Not to mention how he was leaving Florida due to stress just to take the other job?
I have heard a lot of shifty things about Meyer, I have friends who live in Columbus.
I have a good friend that is not an OSU fan or apologist that has known Urban since High School and considers him to be a person of good character. As far as I am concerned this trumps hearsay.
Beamer had a period when he was a bit permissive and it caused the program and the University some embarrassment - is he a scumbag? I think not.
As I have said in other posts, I think Urban Meyer has evolved as most thinking people do and the person you see today is different than the guy that first hit big time football at Florida. You might have a look at some of the things he does today to hold his guys accountable. In fact, Cardale Jones slipped from 2nd to 3rd string at OSU because of immaturity issues off field behavior so maybe he is not quite as permissive as you believe. Jones and Zeke got all the post-game love after the game but if you happened to watch the post-game coverage on the Big 10 network you probably would have been impressed by how well spoken guys like Bosa, Hall, and Smitth were.
Also, you are totally wrong in suggesting that Meyer used stress as a reason to leave Florida so he could take another job. Firstly, he did not have to do this pursue a job at OSU because his Florida contract allowed him to leave Florida without penalty for a job at Notre Dame or OSU. He actually took 2 years away from coaching, one while still at Florida and a second while working as a network analyst.
He was Cb'd to go pro, another poor outlook from Shurburtt :/

More like Branson Wrong!
(I'll see myself out)
Staying the course but life changing decision? Can't believe media blew this up to what it is..... dumb.
Sometimes the choice not to act is the one that changes the course of your life the most.
maybe, but he didnt need a press conference to announce it.
The media blew it up? He tweeted that it was a "life changing decision." He held a press conference. Every indication he gave was that he was going pro. Who holds a press conference for a "life changing decision" at their old high school, not even at their university, to say that they are staying? Release a statement, sure, but a press conference is screaming for the attention. He made it into a media circus.
Exactly. This. He basically lied about this "life changing decision". (Ended up more like a life NOT changing decision.) I should've done this with my fifth year of school and my parents and this probably would've made them sh*t themselves out of anticipation just because of that vague phrase "life changing decision". What a hoax/hack.
Regardless, let's make sure that aOSU gets the D on Labor Day. #alltheblitzes #budfoster
wow, you two are WAY too invested in the life of this guy.
do you really care that much that he held a press conference? But ok, let's look at it objectively. A former 3rd string QB came off the bench and led his team to the national championship, the first of the playoff era. He is currently subject to an extreme amount of speculation about who will be the next year's starter. A position I am sure he wants. So is the business savvy decision simply to release a statement or is it to keep your name in the headlines and make the media, talking heads and social media blow up saying your name? If you answered "release a statement" then you need to go back to business school. He needs to keep his name and popularity up and perform in Spring and Fall because even if Braxton transfers he is still in a heated competition and if they both play extremely well and talent is essentially a wash, being the "popular" QB is important. Team leader, campus legend, national name. Smart as phuck.
And him staying is "life changing". He won the damn championship he could write his own ticket and transfer somewhere or try to go pro. Or he can stay and fight it out and maybe, just maybe be riding the bench next season. that's a big decision.
But let's get back to why you two are so invested in the life of this guy. And to that I say, let it go
You are reading far too into this discussion fern. I could care less about what he does. Do I think he passed up on the possibility to make more money now than he will by waiting? Yes. Do I think every athlete needs a degree? Yes. But the need for a press conference is egocentric behavior. So forgive me for pointing out the ridiculousness of the situation that fueled yesterday's major media circus. This is also the guy who said "we don't come here to play school." His name will be known whether he holds a press conference or not and whether he's a starter or a bench warmer next year. If you're a sports pundit, you know who the big name backup QBs are at the big schools. If you're a college football fan, you know who is making noise at the position around the nation. If you are in the modern world, you likely know the name of the QB that just won the national championship. This was not about a personal gain from a business perspective. He wanted to continue getting the attention he's received over the last month.
Look I totally agree with you. It's an egocentric move and yes I do remember his school comment but you can't say that egos don't succeed in this game. I personally don't like those ocho-cinco type players but it works. I am a Sam Rogers kind of guy, but I can understand why he is doing this and as you say couldn't care less. your last sentence is exactly right, but this is a fame game as much as a talent game. cough * Johnny Football * cough
EDIT: This article HERE
actually is quite enlightening and portrays him as reformed and quite thoughtful. So again, is it really that big of a deal for him to hold a press conference? I don't think so.
Edit 2: And this article HERE is why it was a "life changing decision". Whether you agree with the article or not he has valid reasons to leave, perhaps a few million of them.
From an ESPN article:
Good for him. Boost his high school a little.
Still a call for media attention that he knew he would get. He made a comment saying, "I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal out of this." Ummm, because you called a press conference. You don't call a press conference if you don't want the press about it.
Agreed. I don't like guys calling attention to themselves, but, if they do, I hope it's for something positive. This looks like a positive thing to me. Knew he could get attention, but used that attention to shine the spotlight on his high school.
Yes, the media bought into it and made it go viral everywhere
How are they going to start 3 heisman hopefully QBs against us on Labor Day?
'I think we're going to need a bigger boat"
Insert contemporary TKP community Tight End comments/jokes here.
I'll see myself out...
I really don't understand people that comment negatively on players holding press conferences for decisions. Why the hell does it matter to you if he does? I am going to bet that all three of those QBs have been getting calls, tweets, messages, emails, etc by the hundreds every day since the end of the championship game. He probably got sick and tired of it and set a time to make an official "decision" so that people would back the phuck off.
give the guy a break
Agreed. With the level of his recent publicity, it would be a necessity to have a press conference whether going or staying. People get too emotional about this. Just insert Logan Thomas' name in place of Cardale's, and make it two years ago. We would all clamor for a press conference 'to find out why' either way LT decided. I wold imagine Jones has gotten nonstop texts/tweets from media wanting a quote. This helps stop that.
LT actually did announce his decision to return for his senior season on national TV, through an interview by phone on ESPN. Not technically a press conference but close enough that we're splitting hairs. Some of the negative comments about high profile players and coaches of any other program strike me as hypocritical at worst and sour grapes at best.
I concur
I originally laughed at all this but then got to thinking when a buddy of mine said he saw an interview where the reporter asked what he was going to do next year.
The answer was something along the lines of "Eh, I don't know." probably because he hadn't thought about it and was surprised by the question.
It stirred up some junk by reporters thinking he meant that he wasn't sure what he was going to do and that he was thinking about declaring and he was being peppered by questions about it so, he called a presser to stop the rumors and get some positives out of it. It stopped me laughing at him about it.
Just my thoughts, no inside info here or anything.
My thoughts as a Buckeye:
1. I think Cardale was paying forward to his former HS coach and school to show that education is important. He has matured since his infamous tweet and realized his actions, especially now, will influence other young kids to think about priorities and what is really important in life. He'll be a top pick, based on his skill and size, when the time comes.
2. I think Braxton has played his last down as a QB. His best bet, in my opinion, is to switch to the H back or wide receiver role. His injury is a tough one to fully recover from as a QB and he may find more success in another position where questions about his ability to through the ball would not factor into his draft status.
3. If BM were to transfer he'd still have to prove his durability and develop chemistry with a new team in a year. He knows our system and what he has to work with so staying there if he is healthy may be his best bet to show he is healthy enough to make it in the NFL.
4. That's what I like about the off season. Plenty of drama to fill the void between spring games and the end of the season.
I look forward to next year in Blacksburg. I want revenge but you have a great team and coach so it will be a good game. Trying to convince the boss to go there as our OOC game. VA in the fall is beautiful so it shouldn't be hard to convince her for a road trip through the Blue Ridge.
How does it look for you guys?
Wow, surprised to see a Buckeye fan still on TKP during the offseason. Thanks for the perspective.
It's a tough decision for Braxton. If he doesn't try to go QB his injury must really have been terrible. That's rough for such a dynamic player to have to switch in the last year of college play. I think if he has no intention to play QB then he should definitely stay at OSU. But transfer if he plans to go QB still. No point to stay and compete. Find a team that needs a QB.
Agree with you on Cardale. He seems to have matured a lot. Good to see. I think his "announcement" was a publicity play as much as paying it forward but I see nothing wrong with that.
who do you think would win the job between Jones and Barrett?
JT VS 12 Gauge. That's a tough call. I think JT is a better tactician and has a better grasp of the game in his reads and decision making. 12G has a higher ceiling in terms of ability. Not to take anything away from JT but you can teach the game but you can't teach arm strength. Either one would be a great starter but I think 12G is a better choice. He can run with power and has an accurate cannon of an arm. JT will pick you apart and make you pay for every mistake, 12G will bulldoze through your line if he doesn't have a throw. If he becomes more adapt at the technical aspect of the game he will be amazing. Hearing Urban talk about how he has matured makes me think he gets the nod since that was the big knock on him and why, IMHO, he went from backup to 3rd string this year. So I think it's his to lose.
Still, JT will be a great backup and if he should get the nod I see 12G as the short yardage pound it in guy.
I guess I see 12G as an NFL star and JT as a future great coach who is a backup in the league and uses that to transition to coaching.
Then again, I'm just a guy with an iPad and Urban is a head coach...
I drop by every now and then. This board reminds me of 11W. Great fans who are proud of their team, enjoy some good smack but don't suffer trolls and fools. There's nothing better than good fans who know their football and respect the other guys and want to have a good time, talk some smack and shake hands afterwards and are gracious in victory or (I hope) defeat.
I think our schools have a lot in common and as an engineer have always respected VT as a school. I'd love to play you guys more. While I think we will do better than last year I also think you guys are better than your record and absent some injuries would have shown it; so I look forward to a good old fashioned slug fest.
I'm assuming the "you" in this sentence is a generalist term. I seem to remember it differently....
haha, jk.... yeah you hit the nail on the head about similar type fans. I think most of us that looked in on the 11W site were similarly impressed with what you guys have going there. Though I did have to fix your game day poster art. It was very, very well done just missing some necessary details. haha
I agree with your assessment on JT and 12G (appropriate name, was that an 11W thing?). I think 12G is going to ultimately get the nod. Not just because of his maturity but because no matter what JT did Jones sealed the deal. It's like taking the hottest girl to the prom but then watching her go home with someone else. No one remembers that she arrived with you.
If he keeps his head on straight, and seems he has honestly changed, I see Jones playing Sundays after next season. I think the other thing you can't teach besides a great arm is natural instinct. He seems extremely confident with the ball in his hands, a great quality. Personally I think you ought to start with JT next season and then maybe switch to 12G in game 2. I would like to say it's because JT deserves a shot at redemption but mostly because I like watching the gif above and want to see more.
Yea, it was a generalist "you." He clearly did not do that against you but got better as the season went on. I can see why you'd like a repeat. We have some pretty creative people at 11W an date posters are always fun; though a redo off the one for your game would be appropriate. Maybe the turkey grabbing the ax and taking care of Brutus?
12G is an OSU nickname, since he is #12 and has a canon for an arm.
I'm not so sure about the switch at game 2 strategy. Now you got a guy, no matter how mature and team oriented, is wondering what I did wrong and second guessing himself. Not exactly a confidence builder for a backup. You also lose 1 games worth of experience for your eventual starter. Go with the best at the start; although your strategy would keep 12G from unloading on you.
It's a toss up in my book which one of those guys I'd rather play against. I'm defaulting to Braxton. If no, then I'd prefer to play JT over 12G. 12G is just too big, I think he's taller and outweighs at least one of our DEs.
May even visit you guys over at 11W when the game approaches. Love the crossover banter.
I... uh... have no idea what you mean
yeah, that would be the plan. I think he is a lot more dangerous to the Hokies than JT.
I guess you missed the game day poster I fixed. It was posted here before the game: http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2014/september/3/foerensics-ohio-state...
Here it is again:

looking forward to fixing next years!
Nice fix and prophetic. Next year's should show Brutus rising from the ashes more powerful and ready to wreak havoc.
...or maybe showing Brutus getting picked apart by 2 eagles? :)
In all seriousness I've enjoyed the back and forth with you all over at 11W. I've looked over there from time to time but haven't commented. Perhaps as the off-season drags we can have some good chats as it will be interesting to see what Urban and Bud do with an entire off-season to scheme.
Stop by 11W. We appreciate fans from other schools who drop in to discuss football; and given it's both our teams first game we have plenty of time to pontificate.
I've tried to register twice, and both times it's told me to wait for a confirmation email, which I never got. So i'm just gonna sit here with my tin hat and assume there's some sort of conspiracy in place to keep VT fans out.
Drop them a line via the feedback link, they're pretty good about replying to it.
But... but my tin hat.
Don't worry, you'll fit right in especially when discussing ESPN or as we call it ESecPN
I just requested access today so I should be over there soon with the same screen name. I hate the off-season and some intelligent discussion with the opposition should be a good way to kill some of it!
Had we lost, I'm sure a turkey-shaped phoenix would be on the poster for next year.
