Great to see him getting national recognition for his spectacular performance during the bowl game, and it couldn't have been awarded to a better guy. I know he had some struggles during the season but all in all he has been a massive upgrade over the mess that kicker was in 2013. I expect him to continue to develop into hopefully one of the best kickers in the country by the time he graduates.

Joey along with JC Coleman, Deon Clark, & Kendall Fuller made the ESPN ACC All-Bowl Team.
Though there was one noticeable absence:
I guess if we were going by high school rankings, Stroman could be classified as an "athlete"? Haha.
And weren't the first two FGs the longest attempted by Slye?
Yes, I have a feeling that these were when Beamer was the most excited during the game.
Frank, obviously.
For Shane, I think that moment was when he was riding Stroman down the sideline.
I was kinda upset that Slye wasn't really given much props on TKP after the win. Dude went 4 for 4. Good for him.
I hit him up. 2 personal bests under pressure. It was a heck of a game for him.
Yeah, not really sure where the criticism for Slye was coming from this season. He missed kicks that were 50+ yards and a couple 40+ yarders into a stiff wind. On a normal day it seems like for the most part he's golden from inside 50. May not win any awards but given the abysmal kicking situation the past few years we're in pretty good shape.
I think the biggest criticism I had over the course of the season was that there was absolutely no point in even attempting the field goal from (when I was making these complaints) beyond 45 yards. Honestly, I had more confidence that our offense would pick up the 1st than in Joey making them from 45-50+. And don't get me wrong, no kick is a pie walk (did I mess that up?) and I know it's damn hard to make them from beyond 50. I was absolutely thrilled when he finally hit some long ones in Annapolis and I really hope he keeps it up.
Eh, I feel that was more perception than reality. Looking back through the games, only once in the entire year did we punt or go for it in a situation where it would have been a 45-50 yard field goal and he was 6-8 on 40 yard field goals. Slye's range seemed to be anything under 50. It seemed as though Beamer thought his range was 52 while fans thought it was 42... Could he be better? Yes, absolutely. But by no means was he terrible. I mean, look at what VT's opponents did kicking field goals. Honestly, Slye was about average.
The fact of the matter is that the special teams were dramatically better this year, despite the terrible kickoff returns, and the best since 2010. It wasn't quintessential Beamerball, which I understand is disappointing for many, but it was above-average.
I absolutely agree with you. Trust me, no one was happier at being proven wrong when he hit the one from 49 in Annapolis.
The talk originated because IIRC Frank said we would have 2 PKers, one for =>40 and one 40+.
He changed his mind right before the season started. I think SLY got stronger with practice and coaching and proved it in the bowl game.
Kid had ice in his veins in Annapolis.
Also the Stroman touchdown was on the all-bowl SC Top Ten Plays video, if no one has mentioned it (featured at the top of the all-bowl team article).
