Good write-up Andy. I hate losing Morehead, he was doing good things here. I have no idea who might be out there for a replacement, but after the recent hires I have faith that we'll find a good one.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

I hope the sky is falling fan reads it but I doubt it. So expect the next live chat AB does to be a lot of #firebeamer.

The one thing that bugs me though, is if he truly thought VT had a chance at a National Championship in the next year or two, he would have stayed. Heading to aTm may be an upgrade, but not if you have a strong feeling that a championship is right there for the taking. Other than that, I wish him well. Really liked the dude, but such is life.

I don't think it means we don't have a chance, it proabably means aTm has a greater chance than we do though.

The Aggies did finish the season No. 5 as recently as 2012, so there's that.

I think there are 20-25 teams within a given year that have a chance from the start and aTm is certainly one of those.

Do you really think we have a chance at a National Championship in the next year or two?

Absolutely! Though I am wearing my hokie colored glasses at the moment.

maybe the wrestling team?

We weren't on anyone's radar going into '99. It can happen anytime.

There are examples out there of teams who were afterthoughts in the preseason who went on to become national title contenders (Auburn 2013 being the most recent), but Tech in 1999 doesn't fit that narrative. In 1999, we were 13th in the preseason AP Poll and were considered a National Championship darkhorse by several in the media, as further evidenced by the fact we had a #1 vote in the preseason poll.

Good lord you're right. Who was the one preseason vote?

Of if he thinks that both teams have a chance in a reasonably similar time frame, then go for the one with more money.

Or go to the one where he can learn more in order to pursue an OC job. He probably wants to move up, VT was intro to college coaching, aTm can teach him the spread so when he tries to move up he has Kevin Sumlin, Loeffler, and Beamer as references on his resume.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Precisely! Setting aside the aspects of money, conference affiliation, and everything else, this is a guy who is trying to work his way up the coaching ladder. This isn't a coach who was ever going to stay at one school as a position coach for a long time. He's going to bounce between opportunities, learn from some great coaches, and work his way up the ladder. Nobody should begrudge him for that. And before anyone gets too bent out of shape, I sincerely doubt he will be a long-timer as Texas A&M's WRs coach either. If he's still in that position in 2017, I'd be very surprising. In the meantime, like it or not, being on the offensive staff at Texas A&M is a much better springboard for future career moves than being on an offensive staff for a team that has trouble finishing in the top 100 in total offense. We can argue that all we want, or want it not to be true, but if we set aside the O&M glasses, it's 100% true.

However, having on his resume' that he coached under Beamer will be a very big plus.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Uh, wut?

Do people honestly see VT as a playoff contender in the next two years? I'm just hoping the transition goes smoothly and that recruiting doesn't nose-dive.

There are lots of non-VT related reason for Amo to take the job at aTm. Who knows, maybe he loves beveling.

Why not? Take our 3 losses that were 3 points or less and flip them, and boom we are a 10 win team.

aTm was an 8-5 team last year, so how are they in the conversation and we aren't?

recruiting and marketing first and foremost.

Not trying to cause a ruckus, because I understand the context of your rhetoric. Coaches leave "good" and "bad" teams all the time for many, many reasons that are not championship potential related. I'm on board with you on that.

But really, though... why is it so outlandish to believe that this team could be in consideration for the playoffs in the next two years? Hell, the Hokies beat this year's national champs on the road in September.

I know, Pitt, Wake, GT, Miami, ECU, and BC happened. However, outside of the Miami game, VT could have just as easily won every other one of those games. The schedule doesn't change that much this year. There is no FSU or Clemson away game. Miami loses some talent on the offensive line, and Duke Johnson is gone. IF VT could pull off another OSU win at Lane, the schedule sets up well. Avoid stupid penalties and bone-head plays and this team could very well go undefeated with their talent level and favorable schedule.

I'm not arguing that this is likely, but VT on paper is in just as good of shape to make a run as anybody in the ACC.

Leonard. Duh.

On paper sure, and I fully expect a competitive game with OSU in September (if not a win). But I'm unsure about where the program is headed right now with Frank at the helm. I think that better coaching and improved recruiting helped deliver the OSU win but it's hard not to feel like it's too little, too late for Frank to make a serious playoff run. I have a difficult time seeing beyond the status quo until his transition takes place - and I'm ok with that for now. I appreciate wins over Cincinnati or UNC that I might have taken for granted a few years ago. It's also great to see Frank finally get a win over a truly elite team. But to make that leap to VT as a playoff contender is beyond me at this point.

I think that unless VT crushes all opponents save OSU we will have no chance of the playoffs. Even if we go 11-1 and win the ACC (only loss being to OSU) I doubt we get into the playoffs. I just don't think the committee picks us unless we have dominant showings in all games. Of course who knows how the rest of the top 5 will fare so maybe. I don't count it out but I see us more likely to get snubbed even if we do have a good record and are in the top 5 come decision time.

How much do you want to bet that if we have an undefeated ACC team come next playoff selection time, we get snubbed because of how badly FSU did this year? A 12-1 ACC champ that has a loss to OSU isn't going to get any more love because they'll just say that the only game against real competition was a loss.

There are 124 FCS Division 1 schools.
In the BCS era, of all of those schools, there have been only 15 different teams that have played for a National Championship.
Virginia Tech is one of those 15.

I don't know if this is a wise move for Moorehead or not, but if he thinks it is, it would be the height of dishonor to do anything but wish him the best.

As far as a new hire, so long as it's somebody who stresses that our guys block, I'm cool.

Leonard. Duh.

SO......I guess that means Newsome is not a candidate.

...............

I don't blame Moorehead for moving down to A&M. Listen, there are going to several more Mike Evans and Ryan Swope players to come through that program due to the way they recruit and the offense they run. The last A&M WR coach is now a HC at a P5 school...if TG left VT to go become a DC somewhere else, how many current DB coaches would jump through hoops to become the DB coach in Blacksburg?

I wish Amo all the best in College Station.

Time for another name and avatar change eh?

EDIT: already been covered on other thread. Drink!

The one part of the article I have an issue with is the pay differences. Yes aTm coaches may get paid more but Andy you don't reference how long they have been coaching. I believe French said it in another post that the last WR coach at aTm had 15 years of coaching experience. So making 250k a year isn't bad. AMO has 2 years of actual coaching experience. Not to say that he isn't worth that much or anything or a great coach but it's not like aTm had a guy with similar experience and paid him a ton of cash.

And I hate hearing that it's just about the money as well. I highly doubt that AMO wanted to stay at the WR position coach his entire career regardless of where he goes. He's going to need more on a resume than "WR coach at VT for 20 years" to move up if he has higher asperations, which I'm sure all coaches do. He needs to build his resume and his experience. Though I hate to see him leave I cant' fault him for it. As has been said on previous threads about this we have just been immune to coaches leaving for the past so many years. Probably a reason no one came calling for Curt Newsome or anyone else that sucked coaching while here. Good coaches are going to get lured away. I don't think it has too much to do with championship runs either. OSU lost coaches even though they are expected to repeat. Bama loses coaches almost every year and they are always in the conversation.

So I hope that AMO does well at aTm and wouldn't be surprised to see him move up the coaching ranks quickly and see him as an OC somewhere by 2020.

And as a quick side note, Vince Vaughn does have a connection to AMO as VV played a WR in Rudy, AMO was a WR and ocaches WRs. Coincidence? I think not.
