Former Hokies WR Coach Kevin Sherman to Pitt

This might be of interest to y'all.

Beamer Co. fired Sherman and replaced him with Moorehead.

He was ...... adequate.

We also complained some about Tony Ball but then he got better (or his WR's did) and he left for UGA. Now, he's done well at UGA, their fans really like him. Good recruiter. He was RB's coach for them for about 2 years then moved on to WR's, and they always have a top notch WR corps.

I think we'll do well in replacing Moorehead. Considering he was the most likely coach to leave, I'm sure this situation was well planned for. The worst part is losing his recruiting momentum, but maybe we can bring a guy in who has a specific WR recruit he might be able to bring with him. We could use one more.

We should have done more to keep Ball. He produced some great WR's at VT while he was here....

We seem to be sending our good assistants to the SEC - Ward, Ball, Morehead, Grimes.... we have to do more to keep some of these guys.

That makes sense though, they have more money.

This goes back to my "Recruiting Stars Matter" theory. Recruiting stars are based on offers. Offers from Big Boy Schools. Big Boy Schools have more money. They use that money to hire the best assistants. Your post is case in point.

We haven't lost many assistants, but our good ones go to the SEC (or the NFL, in the case of Kevin Rogers). Our bad ones end up at Purdue, JMU, Emory & Henry. Only Danny Pearman has broke that cycle, we pushed him out and he ended up being a pretty solid assistant at Clemson.

Technically, we lost Whammy Ward to the Oakland Raiders, but he was there for only 1 year (like a lot of their coaches, whether they like it or not) before heading to Arkansas under Petrino for a year and then to Carolina.

I wonder if we could bring Ball back... would we?

I doubt he'd come back. Didn't he make some comments on the way out about wanting to live in a more diverse area?

Good. Gray is familiar coaching against him. Should give us an edge in games against them.

Our weakness against Pitt the last few years has been stopping their run game. They run straight power and have an ungodly big O line that our undersized D line gets beaten down by.

Well, Sherman being the receivers' coach there may still help a little in the run game since Sherman's philosophy is that wide receivers don't have to do any of that silly blocking stuff.

Leonard. Duh.

I know I'm biased since my family has known Kevin's family for a long time but I think that this a good hire for Pitt.

In Sam Rogers we trust.
