Dwayne Lawson makes a top-5 offense a stated goal for VT

There is some serious bravado in the incoming recruiting class. Add to that this quote from Cane-turned-Hokie, 4-star quarterback Dwayne Lawson.

We already have some great defensive players, and I am ready to get us going on offense and have a top five offense in the country, that's the goal."

VT hasn't fielded a top 5 offense in either total or scoring O since the Michael Vick years. If Lawson accomplishes his goal, he will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest QBs in Hokie history. Regardless of how Lawson's career goes at Tech, it's a good sign that recruits on the offensive side of the ball are coming in with high expectations and something to prove.

Good find. I also love that he's trying to get to VT as soon as possible in the summer. That, to me, shows a great drive and commitment to our program. I knew I liked this guy.

"Exit light..."

Yes. Yes. and Yes.

The quote comes from their Future Hokies interviews: HERE

I recommend checking them out. I like the question about VT's recruiting. A bit eye opening.

I love what I'm reading, with one pretty serious exception.

Someone needs to inform Dwayne, New York strip > sirloin.

Like most words it has more than one meaning.

1. (of a person) unattractive in appearance. "she's rather homely"
2. (of a place or surroundings) simple but cozy and comfortable, as in one's own home. "a modern hotel with a homely atmosphere"

Love what I'm hearing from Lawson and the rest of the '15 class. Sounds like they are coming in and expecting to compete day one. I have a feeling Lawson is going to be a good one. Also excited to see what Ford, Durkin, and Motley can do during the spring. We are really setting ourselves up for some great competition at the QB spot.

Aim for the stars and you'll hit the moon, kid. I'll gladly take a top-25 offense.

I'll settle for a non-embarrassing offense first. Baby steps.

love the attitude. bout time somebody drew a line in the sand. Lawson for starter 2015.

Yeah, I think were in the minority, but im all aboard the Lawson hype train for next season. Unless everything really clicks with our offense this spring and in the summer with Brewer, id rather take a slightly scaled back offense with an uber talented QB who can run, over a super complex offense with an average QB

if everyone re watched the wake forest game we would be in the majority.

You're putting that all on Brewer? Seemed more on the O line to me.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Hard to play well when the o-line can't identify and pick up day 1 blitzes. No excuse for that. However, that's on the QB as well, he's got to call that out. Only Coleman really played well that game.

I like the confidence/attitude and I really like Lawson's tape. However, it's really, really hard for a true freshman to be really good. Lawson has a big freshman year ahead of him- needs to get bigger/stronger, learn the playbook, and work on his mechanics. The talent is there and he's pretty much ideal in terms of physical attributes but he has things to work on, which he well knows. Again, I love the attitude. He could be poised for a very big 2016.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how people think that Brewer's struggles identifying blitzes (admittedly his self-identified biggest weakness) will be magically fixed by throwing in a true freshman who will have all of 15 college practices under his belt by that time. If he can do that, more power to him, and start the Heisman campaign. If not, I think we'll be just fine.

I'm not entirely sure either, but I guess they think a bigger, stronger, more mobile QB would escape some of the situations where Brewer took a sack.

Well, LT3 got sacked a whole heck of a lot, so that might not be the best approach. But hey, it just wouldn't be football without unreasonable clamoring for the 2nd string guy.

That made my heart skip a beat.

What a coincidence?

I made watching a top 5 Hokie Offense one of my goals!

Foster's options would be limitless with that type of offense. Every game would look like Pittsburgh last year.

Heck, I would love to know what 40+ and 500+ GAME is like.

Trivia - when is the last time we did that to an FBS opponent?

If I'm not mistaken, the last 2 times we've done it, we lost.

Yup. Generally speaking, if we were putting up 500 yards of offense in the Rickey Bustle or Bryan Stinespring eras, it was because we were in a shootout. It looks like the same trend will probably hold under Lefty, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he gets his scheme fully installed with his own players.

Wake in 2010. I know because I was there in person. Still boggles my mind to look at the scoreboard and see 600 in the total yard column. We had 49 points at the HALF and ended up winning 52-21.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

That LT3 one-handed catch in the endzone for the TD tho... *drools*

Thanks! The irony is that I was there, one of only two games I attended that year. It was the first ever game for my oldest son (then 5 years old). While a lot of the details of that day are fuzzy, the LT3 catch was unforgettable.

To have a top 5 offense you need to start with a top 5 offensive philosophy and system.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

Good attitude to have but talk is cheap, lets wait till he is producing on the field before everyone proclaims him the next "Vick"

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Good attitude to have but talk is cheap

Ugh, yeah, this... My first reaction when reading this was "well that's great, but I'll believe it when I see it".

I've heard statements of grandiose before from recruits before they come here about how they're coming to win it all and how they won't be happy unless our offense is the best, but... Yeah, I just can't buy in until I see it start to show on the field.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

While I agree, having a goal and being a person who will work very hard to achieve that goal is nice to have at the QB position

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

While I do agree that top 5 offense is rather lofty, I have little to no doubt that not only is this guy legit but (barring any serious injuries) he is exactly the guy I've been waiting for to bring VT back to prominence.

I think it's nice the things we've tried to do from the pocket, but Lawson is more comparable to our Mike/Marcus Vick and Bryan Randall days. While LT3 was considered a dual threat QB, his lack of fast twitch-ness and shiftiness made him much more dependent on the designed play called, than a quicker dual threat QB that is capable of creating on the fly. Lawson has that and will not only extend drives with his feet, but will also improve the running game with the added attention he requires from the opposing defenses.

It remains to be seen how well he develops as a thrower, but we've never truly required one of those anyways. I'm sold on this guy as our future regardless of who we recruit going forward. I'm hardly ever wrong about these things so it's time to get excited folks!!

I like that he names three guys he is looking forward to playing with. A stable of RB's to work with in the next couple years, play makers on offense, and new ones coming I'm excited. Reminds me of taking over a crappy team in NCAA '14
