Two years ago, the Hokies lost out on one of the best prospects in Virginia, and nationally, when safety Quin Blanding of Virginia Beach's Bayside HS signed with rival Virginia.
Now, the program has a chance to win over Blanding's direct successor at Bayside. The coaching staff has taken a keen interest in junior Phillip Patterson, rated a 3-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite rankings, offering him a scholarship on January 21.
"On defense, he really filled the void left by Quin Blanding, just because we needed someone to play free safety the way we do at Bayside, and he's been great," said Jonathan White, Bayside's head coach.
White says the Marlins' scheme requires a strong leader in the secondary with a solid command of the defense, and Patterson has made the transition after Blanding's departure as seamless as possible.
"Our defense is deductive, so he makes all our coverage calls," White said. "I knew he would be special, it's not a surprise he's getting this interest."
His performance in his junior season seems to have caught the eye of Tech defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, who first contacted White about wanting to offer Patterson.
"Coach White told me about the offer, and I was just so excited, I didn't expect it at all," Patterson said. "It's a blessing. I definitely like the Hokies."
Patterson says he's never been to Blacksburg, but part of the reason he's already intrigued about the program is that word about the intensity in Lane Stadium certainly gets around.
"Everyone says the atmosphere there is live, the stadium is really exciting for a game," Patterson said.
That early interest in Tech meant that he was more than willing to listen when Gray said the Hokies were looking at him, but part of his surprise about the offer likely stemmed from the fact that Gray, not area recruiter Bryan Stinespring, was the one approaching him.
Patterson also plays wide receiver for Bayside, but he says Gray took the lead in his recruiting after determining that he'd be best suited on the defensive side of the ball if he were to come to Tech.
"I'm a pretty tall guy, and he said they liked my length, that I can go up and get the ball," Patterson said.
The junior does have the type of size requisite for a Tech safety, standing at 6'2" and 170 pounds, but White says he certainly has the skills to also play on offense if need be.
"He was our offensive co-MVP, we ran the offense through him," White said. "He was massive for us."
Patterson's versatility has attracted the attention of several other ACC schools as well. The junior says he hears most from Wake Forest and Duke, which have both offered him.
However, he seems to be taking the Hokies seriously and plans to visit campus in the next few months.
"I'm definitely planning on camping there this summer," Patterson said.
But before he loses yet another veteran leader to the college ranks, White wants to focus on maximizing Patterson's numerous talents for one last year.
"I just want him to finish off the proper way," White said. "We want to build around him and finish off on top. Maybe we can go to the state semifinals or even the state championship. I'd just love to see him go out with a bang."

757?
Choppin' WoodDroppin' LinesChewin' CudProvidin' the best possible environment for student athletesIt's Zohn time.
I almost feel giddy at his potential to reopen the 757. As good a coach as he may be a lot of his success will be measured on how much he can open it back up for the Hokies and start signing big time recruits.
With the absolute toilet that Timecop has made in Doucheville and his inability to translate 5 star talent into success the opportunity to stage this particular coup is nigh.
As long as we don't have to deal with the Thoroughbred B.S. I'm really excited too. LOLUVA had their chance down there and now it's our turn again. I wonder if Burden alread knows this kid.
gotta wonder if the Thoroughbred "coaches" have lost credibility with families now that their master plan has failed so spectacularly. I bet they start jumping on the PSU wagon soon though, if they haven't already.
"Masterplan"?
I know the main dude didn't like VT and wanted his kids to go to UVA for London, but I didn't know about any "Masterplan" -- was that it or something more sinister and devious?
when their coaches wear an inordinate amount of UVA merchandise, visit the campus on regular occasion, coincidentally have 7on7 events during scheduled trips to opposing schools (complaints from VT, UNC and others) and publicly shaming a young kid on twitter talking about how "VT is fucking trash" then I begin to suspect there is a concerted effort. Master plan? well, maybe not because they don't seem all that intelligent, especially aligning themselves to the coaching acumen of Mike London.
The Thoroughbreds are in the glue factory now.
This.
UVa is no longer our biggest threat in the Commonwealth. With ODU whoring that region out to Penn St, the entire 757 is in danger of becoming very, very heavily Nittany Lion'd
The stage is already set. UVA has 1 commit from VA/MD/NJ who held a VT offer, Jahvoni Simmons. They've had to go OOS and get the scraps from just about every other major program's table. The biggest program I saw them really beat out for a recruit, apart from Simmons, was Iowa. So hey, the longer London wants to hang around, the happier I'll be.
If we infiltrate Bayside, that will be huge.
Yeah, when's the last time we landed a scholarship guy from Bayside? Feels like it's been a while.
RB Greg Melvin went to Bayside and then JUCO in Kansas. He redshirted for us in 1995 and then a knee injury ended his career.
Slater?
"Infiltrate" seems too sneaky -- like we were never meant to be there. I'd say "re-establish" instead.
If it means loosening the grip of CavMan, I'm cool with sneaky.
When will the ncaa step in from letting loluva ruin these prospects' football development?
I hate uva as much as the next hokie, but they do put guys in the nfl. Just without any team success
The guys that LOLUVa sends to the NFL more than likely would have gone to the league from pretty much any university. Guys that come in with size, speed, and talent which cannot be taught. It is not a result of the coaching they receive there, but more in spite of it. How many 3 stars have they coached up to be NFL talent?
D'Brickashaw, ras I Dowling, chris long, Kevin ogletree to name a couple
More the point that was claimed, uva doesn't inhibit great talent from going to the nfl more than any other school. 3 stars are not a point of that discusion
I'll give UVA a few guys but Kevin Ogletree is stretching it.
Yea I was mostly just remembering his decent year with Dallas a couple years ago
0 Fullers.
Boom.
and 0 Edmundses.
and as far as I know, 0 Adonoi.
According to Rivals, Ras-I Dowling was a 4 star coming out of Hargrave. Despite being drafted in the second round, he has played in a total of two games, battled injuries, and is on someone's practice squad. Still in the league, though.

Chris Long was also a 4 star by Rivals. With his talent and bloodline, he would most likely have gone to the league no matter where he went to school.

You are right about Kevin Ogletree and D'Brickashaw, but Andy Bitter has shown us how inaccurate the star system is when it comes to OL. UVA does seem to do a really good job of getting lineman drafted, or at least it seems that way.
I would love to see a breakdown of this. VT versus UVA players drafted and compare that to their star rating coming into school.
I was just using 247 composite. It does get tricky with older players though since everything wasn't always so documented
I just Googled their names + Rivals. I thought for sure that D'Brickashaw was rated higher. Things weren't as advanced back then either. It does raise an interesting question though. I am interested to see if their is truth behind the "we coach 'em up" mantra we like to use. I know Kyle Fuller was only a 3 star and he was a first rounder.
I have always seen the "we put players in the NFL" angle to recruiting to be a bit of a chicken and egg scenario. The SEC has the most draft picks lately, but they also have the most 5 and 4 star players. I would think that those recruits would get drafted if they were good enough no matter where the played in college. I always look at Jadeveon Clowney. He was a cannot miss 5 star, went to USCe which wasn't exactly an NFL pipeline, and was a first round pick. I doubt he falls to the later rounds of the draft if he goes somewhere else. It would be nice to see the numbers. Topic for some other time.
I feel like you'd also have to go beyond what round they were taken and look at their actual contributions. For instance Chancellor not getting picked until the 5th (stupid Panthers passed on him 5 times and it killed me each time) but being one of the best in the game. So many things to look at. Wish I had the time to do it.
But have we offered AC Slater yet?
I think we offered his mullet.
Darn it...that's what I get for not scrolling down all the way before replying to a post.
This guy sounds custom built for a Torrian Gray backfield. He has experience calling out coverage assignments before he even gets to campus. And he plays the safety position like a wide receiver. I could see him being an interception machine in our secondary.
Zohn Burden. Go.
Reminds me of:
Damn what a game......
Well, I mean Slater could probably pass off as a 3*-4* recruit now...
