Five Thirty Eight Proves what we already know (link fixed)

Even if you don't like ESPN you have to love them acquiring Five Thirty Eight and pushing them mainstream. I know this has been analyzed in other forum posts, but it is timely for NSD. Five Thirty Eight took a look at who is over and underachieving based on their recruiting class ranking and compared to Ken Massey's rankings.

Some surprises, some not. . Our coaches check in nicely at 8th since 2005. The sorriest Tech in the ACC sneaks in as overachievers due to their recruiting kids that are not highly ranked but are highly specific to their elementary offense. I am surprised by Duke's lowly rating considering the poor recruiting classes they have pulled for the last 10 years and their recent run of successes. What was as expected? LOLUVA. Which school do you think most defies their reputation?

EDIT: OOPS! That link was saved in my added links, clicked wrong one. No tatted Buzz Roll-ing intended.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess Miami

Annual top rated classes

Annual .500 records

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

great guess. I was kinda thinking Michigan or (recently) USCw. They both seem to do very little with a lot (I'm thinking over the last 4-6 years)

Onward and upward

Did I just get BuzzRolled? Might want to check your link :)

I'm getting a youtube vid of a Buzz Williams locker room speech when I try to bring up your "Full article here" link.

Five thirty eight?
Interesting, Homebrew, interesting.

Only one SEC school ahead of VT - Missouri.

and they just got a consensus 5 star dlineman

This is probably Mizzou's best class ever. At least in a while. They generally have a handful of 4* guys and a local 5* player and turn them into great teams. Pinkel is as good as there is at that.

Also, very quietly they have arguably the best d-line coach in the country.

That video was what sold me on Buzz when I first heard the rumor we might get him. Lots of others helped, but that was the one that convinced me Whit Babcock is an elite Athletic Director and that he was somehow hiring us an elite basketball coach.

I've always expected we did more with less than most schools, pretty cool to see it shown quantitatively.

The one problem with this kind of measurement though is that it breaks down for teams that are consistently the top recruiters. If, for example, Alabama and Florida State are both perennially in the top 5 in recruiting, it would be impossible for them to do any better than meet expectations.

Granted, my knowledge of linear regression and residuals (see the second footnote) is nil, so perhaps this is accounted for already?
