Report: Rece Davis will replace Chris Fowler on College GameDay

This comes as kind of a shock. Now people can get them even more mixed up.

Bummer. I like Fowler.

So, here's a question. If travel was the problem, wouldn't that mean that Herbstreit will be replaced, too, since he and Fowler call the games in primetime? If it's only Fowler that's being replaced, that seems strange to me. Gameday won't be quite the same without him. I really liked him.

"Exit light..."

Fowler really enjoys his tennis coverage as well. It's been hinted the last few years that he will need to cut something back, this seems like it. They have Rece Davis, an able replacement.

Fowler is a gem and we will see much more of him in his career. I think of him as the Al Michaels of his generation. He will be around forever.

I forget where I read it but Fowler said in an interview he wanted to slowly get away from college gameday and focus more on the primetime games.

I also think Fowler and Davis look very alike and I have no problem with Rece taking over for him

Fowler and Rece are interchangeable in my mind - they both have the skill to work the booth or the set. I'll probably barely notice the difference, and I'll still enjoy the show immensely.

Now people can get them even more mixed up.

Case and point: I had to think really hard to get who was who straight in my mind. Kinda a bummer a pro VT guy is leaving

Rece has also praised our program on numerous occasions. IIRC he called the GT game that DW4 won work a kickoff return touchdown. Isn't he the guy who said, "Does it get any better than a Thursday night in Blacksburg?"

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Oh thats right! I'm telling you I think these guys are the same person most of the time

Reece is top notch, very professional and unbiased. I like Fowler too but I think the show will be fine as long as they don't bring Nick Lachey back.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Lachey is too busy running his new bar here in Cincy, which is called Lachey Bar. The problem is the sign for the bar looks like the Louisville "L" and Cincy don't take too kindly to all things Loserville.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I can't remeber what game they were at but they were both on the Gameday set doing a segment. Davis told a story about getting a free dinner because the owner thought he was Fowler.

Wait they aren't the same person?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

Fowler has always spoken very highly of VT, especially after April 16th. He seems to have level headed opinion on most issues. I hope he stays active on ESPN, both in college football and tennis (my two favorite sports).

I still feel raw after I re-read that article.

Best job in sports broadcasting in my opinion. Tough to leave that on the table.

The Dude Abides

Some people want Greg McElroy to replace him which I hope to jeebus doesn't happen

"The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese"

"Cannonball" - Carl Kearney Speckler

He could use more seasoning but is a good analyst. Neuheisel would be great but CBS already got him.

Bring back Trev Alberts.

Also acceptable: Trevor Matich, Tom Luginbill

Please God no: Robert Smith, either Griese

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

I was a big Trev fan. Hated to see him go. Matich is also really good.

If we're bringing people back I vote for Mike Tirico.

No way, David MF Wilson should be the replacement.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

DMFWilson or Matich. Matich might be too much of an X's and O's guy, though, better go with Wilson to be safe.

I haven't heard a lot of McElroy, but I really liked what I heard.

Thank Goodness. I know ESPN is not a serious journalistic outfit but this clown brought their otherwise phenominal college football coverage down.

Not nearly as badly as Bill Walton brings down their college basketball coverage. That guy is uhh, well-acquainted with mother nature

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

This is why Rece Davis got the job. If he can play off Lou Holtz this well then he can definitely handle Corso without any issues.

Fowler is great, as is Davis, it will take some getting used to. I wonder who will replace Davis and Holtz on the gameday final. That was a good show even with Holtz's buffoonery.

I must be in the minority, I liked college game day and game day final the way it was. Holtz was/is very good coaching brain and Fowler and Davis were fine in the spot they were in.

I love Fowler. Davis definitely has definitely earned a promotion. But Lou... Dude has a face for radio and a speech impediment. Not sure who's idea it was to put him on air in the first place. I'm sure he knows football, but I think his TV years were far behind him (think of him as the opposite of Seth Greenberg).

I'll really miss the banter between Holtz and May. I paid no attention to their opinions, but I almost always found myself amused and entertained

I just really don't care what halftime analysts have to say. If they're not reciting conventional wisdom, they're just flat out making shit up most of the time. Some just do it more convincingly and eloquently than others.

Me standing close to Lou Holtz talking:

Great guy I'm sure, but it was time

hmmm...never see them at the same place at the same time.

My favorite Lou Holtz moment was when we played ECU back in 09 (i think) at ECU on a Thursday night. The announcers were Reece Davis, Lou Holtz and maybe Mark May? Lou Holtz would call Tyrod, 'Tyrone Tyler' over and over even when Reece Davis and Mark May would try to correct him. But that did not stop him.

@VTimHokie85

Mine was when he set up May with his top 5 a few years. Holtz had an out-of-left-field team in his top 5 early in the season (it may actually have been Cincy after they beat VT at FedEx). May took the bait and incredulously said "Cincinnati? They haven't played anybody".

Holtz smiled and said "they played Pitt..."

More like Lou Trolltz, am I right?
