I'm trying to make some sense out of our current scholarship numbers. As of right now, we have 97-98 (is Hansen on scholarship), so that means 12-13 have to be moved, either by greyshirting, prep schools, or attrition.
Do we know who, besides Hoyt, is likely to greyshirt and who is likely going to prep?
How close are we going to get to 85 before we have to wish guys luck in their future?

Following recruiting for a few years, the thing is the numbers always work out. It's like asking if the sun is going to rise.
I don't like putting out specific names but there are some likely transfers available and I'd assume some walk-ons when put on scholarship for a year are made aware it might not be a rest of their career type ordeal if they don't keep up. Make no mistake though VT doesn't do anything like Bama does and is careful with their numbers.
Yeah, almost every program will be in the mid 90 range of players at this time. A lot can happen in the next 6 months and you'll see the roster slowly dwindle down to 85.
If you look at past recruiting classes, at least 25% never suit up for a game. So expect 6 fewer players from this year's class and that leaves you with about 7-8 who will probably transfer or "retire" from the game.
What worries me about that, though, is only 5 recruits over the last 3 years didn't suit up, and all of them were in the 2012 class.
Worried metaphorically. I love the fact that when these kids have signed, they show up
Other boards have discussed around 10 current scholarship players leaving the program. Take that for what its worth. Have 6AM workouts already started? If not, we may know by then.
An easy place to start are the guys who were r-JR's this year who have zippy chance of contributing as r-SR's..
This is my personal list, no insight into what the coaches are thinking:
r-JR's who I don't expect to see back
WR - Asante
WR - Knowles
TE - Redman
r-SO who I don't expect to see back
TE - Jackson
OL - Willenbrock
WR - Meyer (was he even on scholarship? might stick around off-scholarship)
QB - Motley (looking at being QB #4)
RB - Caleb (an athlete without a position)
I also think RVD and/or DVD might hang it up due to chronic injury problems.
I hope Jackson sticks around. They will need a dependable blocking tight end so Bucky can be the Hback. He is a pretty good player and frankly I was surprised he didn't get a look in 2013 when the kids besides Cline struggled so badly.
People were whispering that DVD's knee was really bad. I hope it isn't. He was the MVP of the spring game in 2013 and I really wanted to see him get a chance to play. But, with all the comments about Lydon being ready to play and Motuapuaka and McKinnon already there, I don't know if he plays again.
I wouldn't worry about it too much... we have someone on it to make sure the math lines up

There is always math
If Judd Hirsch is involved in our scholarship calculation, we're screwed.
Attrition, gray shirts, transfers, etc. The numbers always work out. No doubt some guys are heading into this spring simply competing for a roster spot, but I'm sure we'll see one or two drop off before practice even starts.
