as a snow enthusiast let me go ahead and say ABOUT DAMN TIME! we're looking at about 10-12 inches for the Blacksburg area, with regions west of us getting the worst of it. Northern Virginia you're looking at closer to 8" with Penn. getting roughly 3". Anyone north of that you're scott clean. sorry this took so long to get out and i would definitely pick up your milk and wheaties to last you for a few days. North Carolina is pretty much getting spared, with the bullseye landing right on southwest VA and WV. Temperatures will be well below freezing so do expect this to stick and accumulate very fast and stick around for a bit as well, temperatures wont climb back up above freezing until next weekend. I have an intramural soccer game so i wont be able to answer questions for the next hour and a half or so but feel free to post any comments/concerns here.
PS for students still in da burg, expect the campus snowball fight to be in the next few days, if you haven't participated before do it. ITS AWESOME.

Thanks for the update! Crossing my fingers for Federal Government closure on Tues
I live in Arlington. I think we've had a whopping 3-6 inches total all winter...If we get 8 in one storm I'll be beside myself. That being said, I will believe it when I see it...
Side note: parts of North Carolina are going to see some significant sleet/ice accumulations
Good save meant to mention that but I didn't wanna be late for my game
just looking out for you, buddy
Looks like 2-4" Monday night here in the Triangle. And then ice on top, that should be fun.
What are the estimates for time it'll hit I-81? Im driving from WV to PA tomorrow and trying to decide what time to leave. I trust you over those guys from accuweather
Smart man, and prolly around 1-2 the brunt of the storm is gonna hit later in the night but if you're thinking about travelling late afternoon I'd leave earlier.
You can always come up to Boston or Cape Cod. We've been absolutely slammed the past couple of weeks. I think I have 2-3' feet piled up in most spots, with drifts and piles of snow much, much higher. I'm beginning to feel like Jack Nicholson in 'The Shining'...
A twice removed friend posted a picture of her back yard on facebook she lives in backbay I think then posted a before picture. Her kids swing set is only visible at very top. I thought getting 68.5 inches all winter in Ohio last year was a lot that snowbound here is just but level.
My sister lives in Millbury, Ma. Over the last three weeks she has gotten over 5 feet of snow and more is coming. The snow piles are close to 10 feet high at corners of intersections. Snow that high makes for interesting driving conditions.
In coastal SC they are saying either rain/some freezing rain/ALOT of freezing rain and ice or nothing. They said they won't know until tonight or Monday night or Tuesday!?!?!?!? Any amount of ice will shut down the Grand Strand.
Same in the upstate.....
I don't want any of it; I've got too much work to do.
A Winter Storm Watch was issued here about an hour ago.
Meanwhile at the local grocery stores:
My reaction every time I hear that snow is in the forecast:
Anyone in the DC/Metro area will understand.
Arrested Development will always get a leg from moi
DC traffic from the snow on 1/6:

That about sums it up. Heck, if the weather is simply "cloudy," Maryland drivers enter a new level of Blithering Idiot while on the road. God save us if it rains, snows, or the wind is blowing slightly.
1/6 of what year? not this year I'm pretty sure...we haven't had that kinda snow yet this winter
Yep, 2015. We've had a few days that have snarled things even with 1/2" of snow or so. I think the most we've gotten around my house is about 3", though I suspect we'll see a bit more come tomorrow...
I think 1/6/2015 was the day that Fairfax County schools opened, much to the disappointment (and rightful rage) of many students and parents.
This year for sure. You forget "that kinda snow" around here means " anything white". My half hour commute took 2.5 that day
Screw snow!!!
So time for the Corps to throw down on the drill field?? I used to love those snowball fights!
*sigh*... guess there's no hope for my 3 papers due Monday morning being pushed back. Alas.
a true snow day for VT that closes campus is directly related to buses not being able to run their routes. Let's just say if industrious young students wanted to fabricate a snow day by creating obstacles for said buses one could conceivably be created. It's high risk, high reward. Use the time to study or use the time to creatively impede bus service.... if it goes according to plan it could mean a day or two. I can't say for certain, but it could be that in 1995 a group of students did just this and cause the campus to close for 2 days, which spawned the biggest snowball fight in my 4 years and gave me the extra time needed to study for my math final... It's pure conjecture, but it could have happened that way.
Or five rednecks with their own plows on the front of their trucks to unplowed the streets?
well, that may be a bit more obvious and impacts other cars as well. Being ex-PD whats the charge for getting caught for something like that?
No idea, that would be a state trooper job. I worked in a county where VDOT either did the clearing or contracting it out on side roads. I know in Ohio as a firefighter going on runs during snow storms it was not uncommon to see either a homeowner with a truck and plow or a contracted clearing a driveway by just pushing the snow into the road. It was annoying as hell.
One year i was there they added plow shovels to the front to the BT busses. We felt that was a bit unfair.
As someone in South Dakota...
You guys enjoy it, seriously.
But if I never see snow again it'll be too soon.
70* and partly sunny tomorrow in Jacksonville, FL. And I'll bet you $50 that Jax'll have more heavy jackets on than NOVA tomorrow.
You're just clamoring for some downvotes aren't you? Haha.
It's gonna get chilly even down here in FL. I think it's hilarious when people down here are wearing leather coats and scarves at 60, but it's supposed to get down to 35. I guess I'll have to break out a hoodie.
My weather radio just put out the Winter Storm Warning...

Should we start a bet to see if VT cancels classes or not?
Any other school/town in Va, and that bet would be a slam-dunk yes.
see post above
Thoughts on wxrisk.coms service? I'm seeing a lot of FB posts showing wxrisk has us with a 10-14" total while weather.com has us at 8"
Don't know much about wxrisk, but I try to avoid people on Facebook that get into forecasting, a lot of people can be a bit....opinionative and snippy in front of a screen, regardless iunno what they're seeing that I'm not but the consensus I'm hearing from most people is 11-12" and that's what I'm banking on. If I turn out to be wrong then so be it, but I'm pretty confident in this one.
You forgot to mention the forecast low for Thursday is -11. I'm now not excited for the snow.
Yeah its gonna get really freaking cold
Eyo models are loving up on this storm a little more slight increase to all of the snowfall totals. ALSO somewhere in the blacksurg region someone's gonna get a big ole heaping helping of 18"...who is mother nature gonna pick!?
Only an inch or so of snowfall in Roanoke right now but the roads are inordinately slick for this small amount.
People are not taking it seriously as they drive though.
People are slipping as they try to start away from traffic lights and stop signs but then weaving in and out of traffic to get up to 60MPH on secondaries. I predict lots of accidents today, mostly due to idiots.
isn't this generally true anyway...regardless of weather conditions?
Generally but today and tomorrow will have a much lower incidence of accidents due to mechanical failure and a much higher rate of accidents overall despite lower rate of traffic flow.
Fair enough. I have a 30 mile commute that can take me anywhere from 40 min - 2 hours and I'm just hoping that I can get home before the snow really gets goin'. I plan on working from home tomorrow. I hate driving around DC when it rains...imagine what it's like when it snows.
Sadly, I will believe in the snow when I see it. Too many storms have been forecast but not delivered in the last couple years. I want my snow!
That's typically due to temperature differences. And frankly it's been damn cold enough lately. we've been really close to having a lot of significant snow events this year but due to unusually warm temperatures most of it has died out. Its really really hard to forecast these sorts of storms sometimes with one degree being the difference between sleet and 6 inches of snowfall. The saturation required for these types of storms has been present on MULTIPLE occasions the heavy support on this particular storm is due to the very cold temperatures and the strength of the low carrying this saturation and if you're in the Shenandoah valley or west of the Appalachians you've already begun to see it. The heavy part of the storm doesnt hit for another 3 hours and we've already got an inch or two at tech and classes cancelled after 12
University just cancelled classes starting at noon!
Sandsman is boss. I wish I was on campus during his time. It's only going to get better.
The new president does nothing but continue to impress me every day. Communication, inspiration, and one heck of a sense of humor.
We're ready for this again down in Raleigh!
I remember seeing this picture and not believing it....I'm still skeptical
Damn I actually accidentally posted the photoshopped one. This is the actual original:

Much more believable coming out of Raleigh.
Things to not do in the snow.... Redline your car uphill when it clearly isn't going anywhere...
Oh no, I find that incredibly amusing every time I see it.
Finally getting some of that damn Yankee Rain in Albemarle Co.
1. I'm sorry that you're so close to LOLUVA
2. In regards to your sig: I think it would be more appropriate to say Uva spits...cuz spitters are quitters
1. My appreciations for your understandings.
2. NSFW that would then indicate that they have a gag reflex. Since Wahos are the female version of wahoos, and wahoos are able to consume twice their body weight in chemical concoctions, wouldn't that's make wahos able to consume twice their mass in you-know-what (insert DNA related content)? So the question henceforth becomes: do wahos have a gag reflex or not?
Am i the only one that thinks this post and the signature sounds an awfully lot like someone else that used to bend the limits of decency around here?
I really liked the use of italics, it added some nice fx.
it's like we live secret second lives together
NOVA update: light snow starting. Remember, the only way to handle snow is PANIC

Snow started falling here in the West End around 12:50ish. The roads started getting covered about an hour later, and most of us weren't expecting it to be this heavy until around 4pm.
There might be 4 inches in Cburg now. The forecast called for at least 6 inches by this time last time I checked.
Nothing in Charlottesville reaches a measurement of 6 inches.
if you could measure egos I'm sure they would exceed 6"
I've moved permanently to christiansburg. Start my new job at VT - ARC tomorrow. Maybe. I'll be shoveling snow 1st thing am. Love being in the NRV. Snow is very dry. Hard to have snowball fight in this. I remember 1000 person to a side snowball fight outside Lee in 1980. IT WAS AWESOME!
Awesome, always glad to hear of another alumni in Cburg. It wasn't bad shoveling this morning, but I took my time going to work because I knew it would be mainly dead.
Sadly, work won out for the second time this winter. Luckily, TKP always wins
snow's way too dry for a good snowball fight. Maybe after a day to melt a little...unless the highs are going to be in the single digits. oi
no real problems caused by the storm, other then the usual weather-related traffic incidents. it'll be colder than I can ever remember it being Richmond in a few days, however.
Y'all need to get control of y'all's selves. I'm buried under snow up to the harness and it hasn't gotten above 20 degrees in a week. I walked from the lot to the entrance at work and my nostrils froze.
So about that heads up on this afternoon's snowfall....
Yeesh, its already getting to be more accumulation than we had on Mon/Tues... and we're going to be in brutal cold temps tomorrow.
Sorry nanotech midterm was calling, plus it wasn't looking particularly bad but yeah I highly recommend you don't go outside for the next two days if possible. In da burg its gonna get down to -5 with a -20 wind chill sooooo yeah stay indoors. The wind chill is going to be even worse than that too since snow will be blowing into your face so I just say stay indoors. Sorry for the lack of heads up
This is the only thing that I don't miss about college. Well that and being completely dead broke.
Hell I've been out of college almost 3 years and Im just now starting to not be broke...
God I hate winter.
Man are you telling me it only got up to 54 today and tommorow is going to be in the upper 30's brrrrr.
Damn nature, you scary
The cold hit Blacksburg like

eshiben, when will the cold end? When will we be back to normal winter conditions?
Sunday.
Sunday is gonna be a short relief of the cold air then it looks like another system is going to come in and just linger all week. Not quite as cold as this week but definitely still going to be chilly next week too.
Ugh, thanks. I'm juuust about done with winter at this point. More shoveling this winter than I've done recently and I'm just done with it. These ridiculous temperatures aren't helping my attitude.
Are they taking adequate care of your crew in the stables?
Marginally. When you say "they", I assume you're referring to how I strap on a snow shovel and bear the brunt of winter so I can carve paths out for a cat to meander outside for 45 seconds at a time.
Count me as one of the seemingly few loving this actual winter we're finally having in the NRV. Until this week, all of 'winter' has been pretty bleak. And for a snowboarder such as myself, screw that.
Yeah seriously. It's not winter without snow-IMO. I was about to give up. LOL!
Although I do hate using vacation time for when my office closes but hey
everyone needs a snow day every now and then. :)
It's not the snow so much as the ridiculously cold temperatures. It's downright dangerous out there. They're calling for the upper 40s where I live on Sunday. That shit is gonna feel great.
Now the cold is totally different. I don't function well under 30 degrees. From what I
hear this weekend is going to crazy as well weather wise.
So cold I actually had to wear pants riding my motorcycle in Roanoke yesterday.
They closed down the parkway, How am I supposed to enjoy the breeze in my hair if I have to wear pants?
Heads up there could be some ice accumulation tomorrow, the NAM likes a couple of inches of snow but I think the ice will be the more significant part. Also keep an eye out for another post the euro really likes a storm next weekend
